Ethanol: Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, pure alcohol, grain alcohol, or drinking alcohol, is a

volatile, flammable, colorless liquid. It is a psychoactive drug, best known as the type of alcohol found in
alcoholic beverages and in thermometers. In common usage, it is often referred to simply as alcohol.

Ethanol is a straight-chain alcohol, and its molecular formula is C2H5OH. An alternative notation is CH3-
CH2-OH, which indicates that the carbon of a methyl group (CH3-) is attached to the carbon of a
methylene group (-CH2-), which is attached to the oxygen of a hydroxyl group (-OH).

Do not confuse Ethanol with Methanol which will probably make you go blind or die if you
drink it.

Methanol: Methanol is the simplest alcohol, being only a methyl group linked to a hydroxyl group. It
is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable liquid with a distinctive odor very similar to that of ethanol
(drinking alcohol).

Also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcoholMethanol acquired the name "wood alcohol" because it was
once produced chiefly as a byproduct of the destructive distillation of wood.

Ethanol is a two carbon alcohol. Methanol is a one carbon alcohol. Ethanol is an intoxicant. A teaspoon of
methanol will make you go blind. They both increase octane and are similar as a fuel or additive, I
believe.

Uses of Ethanol and Methanol:

Ethanol Uses
Ethanol is such a simple chemical compound, but it has so many uses. It is used in antiseptics,
household cleaning products, and even varnishes. In this section, we will discuss the many uses
of ethanol.

Alcoholic Beverages

In adult social gatherings and parties, it will be highly likely that there will be
alcoholic beverages. Ethanol is the alcohol that is found in our alcoholic beverages
like beer, whiskey, and brandy. In alcoholic beverages, the ethanol is produced from
the process of fermentation, which is the chemical breakdown of sugar by yeast.

Hand Sanitizers and Medical Wipes

We often see hand sanitizer dispensers in public restrooms. During the flu season, we also tend to
carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer in our bags. Ethanol is effective in killing organisms like
bacteria, fungi, and viruses, so it is no surprise that another common use of ethanol is that it is an
ingredient in hand sanitizer gels.

Various Solvents
Do you ever wonder what the solvent is for products like perfumes, varnish, and paints? What
these products have in common is that the solvent used is ethanol. Because it is easily mixed
with water and many other organic compounds, ethanol makes an ideal solvent for these
products. It is a common solvent in personal care products like deodorants, hairsprays, and
astringents. It is also found in food additives like food coloring and flavoring. Paints, lacquers,
and varnish also have ethanol as one of their components.

Methanol is Everywhere
Methanol is essential in our lives every day. From the time you awaken until you go to bed,
Methanol has enabled you to function during your day-to-day normal tasks. You can find
Methanol in the silicone that goes into your shampoo, the PET which makes your plastic bottle
of water you bought at the convenience store. You can also find Methanol in many of the
components of the car you drove to work and possibly the fuel you used in your car. It is also
present in the fleece jacket you put on to keep you warm and the pharmaceuticals you took to
help you fight off your cold.

The fact is, you are surrounded by products that contain Methanol, even though you might not
have even known it! Methanol helps support our everyday lifestyles and has done so for many
yearsenriching the quality of the goods and services we have grown to expect.

The compound is widely used as a raw material in the production of other chemicals, particularly
formaldehyde, which in turn is used in the production of plastics. It is added to ethanol intended
for industrial or household cleaning purposes, as opposed to drinking, to render it undrinkable.
This avoids the taxes payable on alcoholic drinks. The resulting product is known as denatured
alcohol, or methylated spirit, and typically contains about 10% methanol. Methyl alcohol is also
an ingredient in some antifreeze mixtures, in windshield wiper fluid, and is used as a solvent in
various paints and varnishes.A growing application of methyl alcohol is as a fuel, either directly,
or in the manufacture of biodiesel. It has been used in pure form for some time in top-end racing
engines, drag racers and in radio-controlled model airplanes, but it is being advocated as a viable
alternative to fossil fuels for more general use. Like fossil fuels, methanol produces carbon
dioxide during combustion, but has the advantage that it can be manufactured cheaply from
renewable resources. It also burns more cleanly than fuels such as gasoline, as it does not
produce smoke, soot, or large amounts of harmful hydrocarbon compounds.

What is 96% ethanol:

Ethanol (96 per cent) contains not less than 95.1 percent v/v (92.6 per cent m/m) and not more
than 96.9 percent v/v (95.2 per cent m/m) of C2H5OH (MW:46.07) at 20C, and water.

A colorless, clear, volatile, flammable liquid, hygroscopic, miscible with water and with
methylene chloride. It burns with a blue, smokeless flame. It boils at about 78C.

This is the highest concentration of ethanol you can get by distillation.

What is 40% ethanol & ABV(Alcohol by Volume):

Alcohol by volume (abbreviated as ABV, abv, or alc/vol) is a standard measure of how much
alcohol (ethanol) is contained in a given volume of an alcoholic beverage (expressed as a volume
percent). It is defined as the number of millilitres of pure ethanol present in 100 millilitres of
solution at 20C. The number of millilitres of pure ethanol is the mass of the ethanol divided by
its density at 20C, which is 0.78924 g/ml.

Liquor is measured by proof which is double the amount of alcohol. So 100 proof Vodka would
be 50% alcohol and 80 proof would be 40% alcohol. Wine is measured by percentage of volume,
such as 12%, 13.5%. Fortified wines have alcohol added to raise the percentage of alcohol in
them to 20% or more. Beer is way lower in alcohol (4.2%- 9%) and is measured as percentage of
alcohol to volume.

Strong beers are 15% alcohol but 30 Proof. Moonshine can be 180 proof but not 200. Proof and
alcohol percentages are different. Proof is twice the percentage of alcohol. So vodka that's 40%
alcohol is 80 proof. Moonshine that's 80% alcohol is 160 proof.
It's just an old english term that was used in "degrees proof." Way back, the alcohol content of a
drink would be 4/7 and if a drink was 50% alcohol, you would flip around the fraction and times
50x(7/4) = 87.5 degrees proof. 100% alcohol would be 175 degrees proof. It's an old english
thing that people just do now for tradition. In the US, proof is just %alcohol times 2
