A Message From
Graduate Programs
The Dean
Application for Graduate
Admission
The University of Southern California has been described as "a private university
Program Directory with a public trust." We are a large university with the extensive academic and
research activity and range of disciplines that characterize major public universities.
But as a private university well into its second century-the largest private research
university west of the Mississippi River-we also maintain the independence and
flexibility that promote innovation and growth.
This fusion of public spirit and independent means generates remarkable oppor-
tunities for our students. Long an international university with a cosmopolitan mix
of students and faculty, USC's alumni can be found in leadership positions world-
wide. Moreover, our key Pacific Rim location in the world's vibrant media capital,
Los Angeles, positions USC to take advantage of the continuing revolution in infor-
mation technology. It also enables our students to study and work in an exhilarating
social environment that only a place such as Southern California can provide.
The information in this application will help you begin to explore these and
many other opportunities while you discover the breadth of offerings available to
help you reach your career and personal goals.
I am delighted that you are considering applying to the University of Southern
California for graduate study. I invite you to explore this community-to begin talk-
ing immediately with the staff and faculty who will be partners with you, whatever
your particular choice of scholarly endeavor. They are your source for information
about program content, fellowships and assistantships, and any discipline-related
requirements for admission.
Thank you for your interest in the USC and please accept my best wishes in
finding that program which will provide the greatest opportunities for your future.
