kilometers North of Kingston. The purpose of this trip was to conduct a study.
Before arriving in Annotto Bay St Mary questionnaires were prepared among the
teachers and issued to students where a sample size of 30 individuals was obtained.
After arriving in Annotto Bay groups of six were formed and each group member
was assigned to five questionnaires to carry out five interviews with individuals
located in the town. With the aid of the questionnaire, face to face interviews were
carried out to investigate whether or not individuals were visiting (if so why),
working, living in the town whether they had children or not ages and amount.
After the interviews were complete of the towns main infrastructures such as
churches, banks, schools, food &clothing stores and hospitals were tallied to see
how resourceful the town was. After the tally was made the groups ventured to the
transport hub to make a note of all plied by buses and taxies to determine how
assessable the town was. Data was also collected from the Statistical Institute of
Jamaica to find out the size and population, of the town and its distance from
Kingston.
PRESENTATION OF DATA
This study will identify the factors influencing population growth in the town of
Annotto Bay. Since the aim of the study was to investigate the factors influencing
population growth, only pull factors were investigated which can be described as
the aspects which attracts individuals to a particular place. Pull factors can be
divided into two groups; those which are influenced by man (Human factors) and
those which are influenced by nature (Physical Factors).the physical factors that
were found in the study include relief, costal location and water supply. The
PYHSICAL FACTORS
Relief
The map in figure one (1) shows that the town of Annotto Bay is located in an area
with a very flat relief due to its coastal location because the height above sea level
decreases as you get closer to the sea. This factor influences growth and
development for it allows for the proper construction of the various infrastructures
such as factories, hospitals, banks which provide services to the individuals in the
town of Annotto Bay. It also allows for the construction of housing facilities for the
citizens of the town and this also attracts other individuals to the town.
COASTAL LOCATION
As shown in figure one (1) Annotto Bay is located in an area which is near to the
coast the not only influences the relief but also it allows for the presence of coral
reefs.The vast coral reef along the coast provides a sheltered home for fish which
allows for the fishing industry to thrive. The coral reef also protects the mainland
/shore from coastal erosion by braking waves coming towards the shore /mainland.

side of Annotto Bay is the towns main source of fresh water. This allows for the
growth and development of town for all living things need water to survive and it
also aids in the growth of other commercial and economical services found in the
town and it aids with the water supply of the Polo Common farm which provides

The bar graph in figure two (2) shows the different routes plied by buses and taxies
in the town of Annotto Bay. Based on the information represented in the bar graph,
the most popular route was the route travelling from Port Maria to Annotto Bay.
infrastructure within the town. say why? Port Maria is a more popular
town..
The routesd which travelledplied from Kingston to Annotto Bay was the least
lot more buses enter the town than taxies transporting more individuals into the
town from popular areas in St. Mary which shows how accessible the town is.

The pie chart shown in figure three (3) represents the percentage of different
economic activities in the town of Annotto Bay. As shown in the pie chart the
second highest economic activity would be the primary portion which is due to the
farm closely associated with the town which not only provides jobs but a source of
food. The towns highest economic activity would be the secondary portion which
includes all industrial facilities the town .This facilities can be broken down in
infrastructures. The least high economical activity would be the tertiary portion
discuss the number of persons employed in the different services.- social services-
CONCLUSION
In conclusion the factors which influence the population growth and development
in the town of Annotto Bay located in St.Mary can be divided into two groups
Human and Physical factors. The physical factors include the relief of the town
which is very flat, this allows for the proper construction of various buildings and
infrastructures, which includes housing facilities for the citizens of the town.
Another physical factor is the availability of fresh water, which is the Wag Water
River which is found in the western side of the town. Annotto Bays location to the
coast is another physical factor which influences its relief and also is economic
status for fishing is one of the main economic activities in the town. Its location to
the coast also allows for the presence of corals reefs which again influence its
The Human Factors which influence the population growth and development of
the town include its accessibility to the surrounding towns as well as the capital
city Kingston which allows for the trade of goods and services between the citizens
of Annotto bay and these towns. Human Factors such as the towns agricultural and
economical activities allow for the availability of employment which will attract
The human factor, availability of services has also allowed for the construction of
infrastructures that have provided the necessary services for the individuals of the
town.
