AIM
To investigate the factors influencing population growth and development in

the town of Annotto Bay located in St. Mary.

METHODOLOGY
On the 4th of June 2014, 5th form students from the Camperdown High School

traveled to Annotto Bay located on the coast of St Mary which is approximately 46

kilometers North of Kingston. The purpose of this trip was to conduct a study.

Before arriving in Annotto Bay St Mary questionnaires were prepared among the

teachers and issued to students where a sample size of 30 individuals was obtained.

After arriving in Annotto Bay groups of six were formed and each group member

was assigned to five questionnaires to carry out five interviews with individuals

located in the town. With the aid of the questionnaire, face to face interviews were

carried out to investigate whether or not individuals were visiting (if so why),

working, living in the town whether they had children or not ages and amount.

churches, banks, schools, food &clothing stores and hospitals were tallied to see

how resourceful the town was. After the tally was made the groups ventured to the

transport hub to make a note of all plied by buses and taxies to determine how

assessable the town was. Data was also collected from the Statistical Institute of

Jamaica to find out the size and population, of the town and its distance from

Kingston.
PRESENTATION OF DATA
This study will identify the factors influencing population growth in the town of

Annotto Bay. Since the aim of the study was to investigate the factors influencing

population growth, only pull factors were investigated which can be described as

the aspects which attracts individuals to a particular place. Pull factors can be

divided into two groups; those which are influenced by man (Human factors) and

those which are influenced by nature (Physical Factors).the physical factors that

were found in the study include relief, costal location and water supply. The

Human factors that where found include accessibility to services, communication,

agriculture and economical activities.

PYHSICAL FACTORS

Relief

The map in figure one (1) shows that the town of Annotto Bay is located in an area

with a very flat relief due to its coastal location because the height above sea level

decreases as you get closer to the sea. This factor influences growth and

development for it allows for the proper construction of the various infrastructures

such as factories, hospitals, banks which provide services to the individuals in the

town of Annotto Bay. It also allows for the construction of housing facilities for the

citizens of the town and this also attracts other individuals to the town.
COASTAL LOCATION

As shown in figure one (1) Annotto Bay is located in an area which is near to the

coast the not only influences the relief but also it allows for the presence of coral

reefs. The vast coral reef along the coast provides a sheltered home for fish which

allows for the fishing industry to thrive. The coral reef also protects the mainland

/shore from coastal erosion by braking waves coming towards the shore /mainland.

As shown in the map the town is located in a sheltered bay which also protects it

from the harsh impact destructive waves.

ACCESS TO WATER SUPPLY

As shown in figure one (1) the Wag Water River which empties into the western

side of Annotto Bay is the towns main source of fresh water. This allows for the

growth and development of town for all living things need water to survive and it

also aids in the growth of other commercial and economical services found in the

town and it aids with the water supply of the Polo Common farm which provides

the main agricultural activity in the town.

HUMAN FACTORS

ACCESSIBILTY
Figure 2

The bar graph in figure two (2) shows the different routes plied by buses and taxies

in the town of Annotto Bay. Based on the information represented in the bar graph,

the most popular route was the route travelling from Port Maria to Annotto Bay.

This may be so due to work availability in the town provided by economic

infrastructure within the town. say why? Port Maria is a more popular

town..

The routesd which travelledplied from Kingston to Annotto Bay was the least

popular, possibly due to higher work availabilitygreater employment and services

in Kingston providing little to or no reason to travel to Annotto Bay. On average a

lot more buses enter the town than taxies transporting more individuals into the

town from popular areas in St. Mary which shows how accessible the town is.
Figure 3
The pie chart shown in figure three (3) represents the percentage of different

economic activities in the town of Annotto Bay. As shown in the pie chart the

second highest economic activity would be the primary portion which is due to the

farm closely associated with the town which not only provides jobs but a source of

food. The towns highest economic activity would be the secondary portion which

includes all industrial facilities the town .This facilities can be broken down in

three(3) categories known as COMMERCIAL, WHOLESALE and INDUSTRIAL

infrastructures. The least high economical activity would be the tertiary portion

in the town of Annotto Bay located in St.Mary can be divided into two groups

Human and Physical factors. The physical factors include the relief of the town

which is very flat, this allows for the proper construction of various buildings and

infrastructures, which includes housing facilities for the citizens of the town.
Another physical factor is the availability of fresh water, which is the Wag Water

River which is found in the western side of the town. Annotto Bays location to the

coast is another physical factor which influences its relief and also is economic

status for fishing is one of the main economic activities in the town. Its location to

the coast also allows for the presence of corals reefs which again influence its

economy also gives it shelter from the impact of destructive waves.

The Human Factors which influence the population growth and development of

the town include its accessibility to the surrounding towns as well as the capital

city Kingston which allows for the trade of goods and services between the citizens

of Annotto bay and these towns. Human Factors such as the towns agricultural and
