Ruling for about 250 yrs, the Guptans stabilized the ruling in india.

Numistatics

Entire Guptans followed Dinar coins.


During times of Chandragupta I, coins contained the images of his wife Kumaradevi.
During Samudragupta times, the coins contained Samudragupta playing veena with title Kaviraja.
They also contained Samudragupta performing Ashwamedhayaga with title
Ashwamedhaparakrama. Contained Samudragupta involved in a battle with axe with title
Parashukritanta. And further contained Samudragupta hunting tiger with title
Vyagraparakrama.
Chandragupta II was the 1st ruler to mint silver coins. These coins contained Chandragupta
II killing a lion. And with title Simhachandra.
Kumaragupta : coins contained Kumaragupta performing Aswamedhayaga, with title
Ashwamedha Mahendra. The coin also contained Kumaragupta killing a Rhino which tells his
conquest of Assam.

Political History :
Srigupta and Ghatotkacha, both adopted the titles Majaraja.
Chandragupta I , the title Majarajadhiraja.
Samudragupta : Allahabad inscription issued by Harisena, who was Sandhivigrahaka in
Samudragupta period. This inscription tells that he conquered 8 Aryavartha kingdoms, 9
Ganarajyas, 18 Atavika rajyas, 5 border states and 12 dakshinapada kingdoms which
were Kancheya Vishnugopa of Pallavans, and Vengaya Hastivarma of Vengi.
NOTE : Indologist V.A. Smith calls Samudragupta as Indian Napolean.
Chandragupta II
i. invaded Saka kingdom and captured Ujjain. Titles were Sakari, slayer of Saka
and Vikramaditya.
ii. Contained 9 scholars , called Navaratnas.
a) Kalidasa
i. Plays : Abhignanasakuntalam, Malavikagnimitram, Vikrama Urvasi.
ii. Kavya : Meghadhutam, Kumarasambhava, Raghuvamsam, and
Ritusamharam.
b) Vishnu Sharma
i. Book : Panchatantra (collection of short stories)
c) Amarasimha wrote Amarakosa (A Sanskrit dictionary)
d) Varuruchi wrote Prakritapraka (in Prakrit)
e) Susruta wrote Sushrutasamhita (Book on surgery)
f) Dhanvantari wrote Nighantu (Medical dictionary)
g) Aryabhatta wrote Aryabhatiyam (branches of Maths, and used 0, decimals),
and Suryadiddhanta (book on astronomy, has heliocentric theory, rotation
and revolutions, solar, lunar eclipse)
h) Varahamira wrote Brihatsamhita, an encyclopedia.
i) Brahmagupta wrote Khandana Khanda Khavya, which is known as Indian
Newton.

ACHARYANAGARJUNA :
Believed to be contemporary of Satavahanas.
Developed 2 philosophies in Mahayana Buddhism. They were Sunyavada and Madhyamika
vada.
Known as 2nd Buddha and 2nd Einstein.

6)Kumaragupta
Builder of Nalanda University, a Mahayana university.
Last was Vishnugupta after vishnuguptas death, Guptan empire emerged into many
smaller kingdoms.

The urban admin was headed by guilds. They were Sreni, Nigama, Puga, Sarthavaha
Note : Hindu temples were first built by Guptans.

ART and ARCHITECTURE OF GUPTANS:

Buddhist caves were built by Guptans.


Eg Bagh in MP, Ajanta in MH (some of the 31 caves), 20 Hindu cave temples at Udayagiri,
MP (They were the earliest Hindu cave temples).

STYLE :
3 different styles of building temples emerged.
a. Shikara style (the Northern style OR Nagara style)
b. Dravida style , the southern style.
c. Vesara style developed in Deccan by Chalukyas of Badami.
The difference between both the styles is the shape of the Vimana.
Northern style developed by Guptans.
Southern style developed by Pallavas.
Note Hindu religion emerged during Guptan Age.

SCULPTURES :
Varaha sculpture at Udayagiri, M.P was the family god of Guptans.
The copper image of Buddha, which is 7.5 feet and of 1 tonne was found at Sutangunj,
Bihar.

AJANTHA :
Present in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, the world heritage.
It is a combination of Art, Architecture, Paintings, which are entirely Buddhist.
There are 31 caves in horse shoe caves which were Chaityas and Viharas of Buddhist
monks.
Mural paintings are found in many caves, which are directly painted on the roofs and walls,
depicting mythological stories from Buddhist books, Jatakas.
The Buddhist books were written in Pali, describing the stories of Buddha, and Bodhisatva
were Jatakas.
The content of Jatakas are in the paintings of caves.
Sculptures depicting Buddhist practices were found.

The Ajanta caves were the patronage of various kings, dating back to 2nd B.C to 8th century
