GETTING STARTED 3

CHAPTER 1 - GETTING STARTED

ROADMAP FOR USING THIS GUIDE
Two chapters that should be referred to in every installation:
Chapter 1 Getting Started explains all of the content of the guide and how to
prepare for installation.

Chapter 3 Installing MBD for ANSYS explains all of the steps to install MBD for
ANSYS and the RD Viewer, and how to register the available licenses.

Chapter 2 Installing the FunctionBay License Server is used once at each site. The license
server can provide MBD for ANSYS licenses to other client computers on the network.

Chapter 4 Using Three-Server Redundancy explains the use of 3 license servers, which
has the advantage that only 2 license servers are needed in order to provide licenses.
Maintenance can be done on 1 license server without taking down all of the licenses.
PE

Chapter 5 - Checking the Windows Firewall is used to setup the exceptions that allow the
FunctionBay license server to provide licenses through any firewalls in the network.

Chapter 6 - Troubleshooting is used for two situations: 1) Checking ANSYS Workbench
registration, and 2) correcting a possible license registration issue on computers with
preexisting RecurDyn installations.

REGISTRATION OF THE LICENSE

1. After the files are installed the FunctionBay License Manager appears. By default the
Server Name is set to the name of local computer where the installation is occurring.

FunctionBay License Server was installed. There is no need to change the Port
number unless special arrangements were made at the time of the installation of the
FunctionBay License Server.

PE

2. Click the OK button. If you see an error message the cause may be that the

server or your network is not operating properly. Click the Cancel button and
make sure the server and network is operating correctly. Then restart the
FunctionBay License Manager as described below (Manually Starting the
RA

License Manager).

3. An alert box appears to indicate that the license was registered successfully.

USING THREE-SERVER REDUNDANCY 19

CHAPTER 4 USING THREE-SERVER REDUNDANCY

With this arrangement the three License Servers send messages periodically to each other
to make sure at least two servers are running and communicating. A pair of servers is
configured when at least two of the three license servers are running and communicating
with each other.

The License Servers are distinguished as either primary, secondary, or tertiary. Also, one

License Server is specified as the master (m) and is responsible for providing licenses to
use MBD for ANSYS and the RecurDyn Viewer, recording information into the debug log,
and recording information into the report log. If the master is not responding, another
License Server is specified as the
master.

In the figure to the right, the

primary License Server is the

PE

master. When the users

computer sends a checkout
request for a license, the
master responds and then
provides the license to use

RA

MBD for ANSYS or the

RecurDyn Viewer.

In the second figure, the

secondary License Server
becomes the master because

the primary License Server is
not responding.
G

The tertiary server can never be the

master. If both primary and
secondary license servers are not
responding, licenses are no longer
lo

provided to use MBD for ANSYS or the RecurDyn Viewer.

STEP TO INSTALL THE REDUNDANT LICENSE

1. Obtain a FunctionBay license file that contains three SERVER lines that correspond to
ba

the three license server computers.

2. Install the FunctionBay License Server, referencing the same license file, on each of
the three license server computers (Chapter 2 explains the License Server
installation).
l
USING THREE-SERVER REDUNDANCY 20

3. Manually start the FunctionBay License Manager as explained at the top of page 18.
The FunctionBay License Manager window appears.
4. Click the Add button to add three rows in the table.
5. Enter the information for the three license servers as shown in the figure.

Note that the server names include different port numbers. This is because some cases

have been reported of 100% CPU usage due to conflicts of the TCP/IP ports because the
products used the same FLEXLM license manager. To avoid this collision, the user
PE

should modify the port number in the license file to be different before setting up the
redundant license. The user can choose port numbers between the values of 27000 and
27009.

your_host_ID your_physical_adress

This is the syntax of the server line in the license file:
SERVER TCP/IP_port_number
RA

SERVER
SERVER
SERVER
Server_1
Server_2
Server_3
001122334455
223344550011
554433221100
27000
27001
27002

The following is an example of the Server portion of a license file that is configured for
three-server redundancy:

Given the above Server lines in the license file, the user should enter information about
G

the three license servers as shown in the RecurDyn License Manager window above.

If the installation of the redundant license fails, please check the Windows Firewall
lo

settings as described in Chapter 5 of this document.

ba
l
CHECKING THE WINDOWS FIREWALL 21

CHAPTER 5 CHECKING THE WINDOWS FIREWALL

The Windows Firewall is generally turned on by default. Some adjustments are needed
when the Firewall is activated on the MBD for ANSYS License Server computer in order for
the licensing to work properly. There are two executables, lmgrd.exe and fblmd.exe,
that are needed for the license sharing between computers. Therefore, these executables
MUST be added in the Programs and Service list of Exception of Windows Firewall. The

procedure below explains how to do this in Windows 7 (similar in Windows 8).

1. Please go to Windows Firewall. (Windows Start Button ->Control Panel->Windows Firewall)

2. It is likely that the Firewall is On, as is shown in the figure for Windows 7.

PE

RA

3. Click on the Allow a program through Windows Firewall link in the left pane as shown.

TROUBLESHOOTING 26

RESETTING THE LICENSE REGISTRATION

The need to reset the license registration will only be needed in situations where MBD for
ANSYS is installed on computers that are already running the RecurDyn/Professional
standalone software. There is a small probability that old license registration information
from RecurDyn/Professional will interfere with the correct licensing of MBD for ANSYS.

If your site meets the following conditions:

1. RecurDyn/Professional was installed before MBD for ANSYS.
2. When installing MBD for ANSYS there are problems with the solver running and a
license check error is reported,
then please follow these steps:

1. Obtain the executable file RDCleanTool.exe from your MBD for ANSYS
sales representative.
PE

2. Uninstall MBD for ANSYS using the Programs and Features tool in the Control Panel.
RA

3. Double-click on the executable

file RDCleanTool.exe and the
dialog box that is shown will
appear. Check on the Clear
RecurDyn license information
box.

4. Click on the OK button.
G

5. Use the RecurDyn License

Manager to refer to the license
server of the correct computer.
lo

6. Reinstall MBD for ANSYS. The

licensing for the solver should now work properly.

7. If any problems remain please refer to your MBD for ANSYS support contact.
ba
l
TROUBLESHOOTING 27

WORKING WITH ANSYS V15.0

There can be some problems with the definition of certain environmental variables when
using MBD for ANSYS with ANSYS V15.0. If possible it is recommended to upgrade to
ANSYS V15.0.7.

If that is not possible then please use the RunWBforMBD.bat file to start up ANSYS
workbench so that the environmental variables are defined properly. This file is found in
the MBD for ANSYS installation directory, as shown below.

PE

For convenience, a user with administrative privileges can create a shortcut to run this bat file.
Once the shortcut is created, a user with regular user privileges can reset the environmental
RA

variables and run MBD for ANSYS without needing any action by an administrator.

The shortcut can be located on the users desktop:

G
lo
ba
l
TROUBLESHOOTING 28

or within the Start Menu.

Note that once the user executes the short-cut there is no need to use the shortcut again

unless the problem reoccurs. It is sufficient to run ANSYS Workbench in the normal way.
