3.* In an electrical circuit, when two resistors R1 and R2 are connected in parallel, the total
resistance is given by R1 = R1 1 + R1 2 . If R1 and R2 are increasing at rates of 0.3 /s and

when the length is 20 cm and the radius is 5 cm?
5.* At noon, ship A is 100 km west of ship B. Ship A is sailing south at 35 km/h, ship B is
sailing north at 15 km/h. How fast is the distance between the ships changing at 4:00 PM?
6. Sketch the graph of a continuous function f (x) which has the given properties:
(a) an absolute maximum at x = 1, a local minimum at x = 2 but no absolute minimum
(b) a critical number at x = 1 but no local maximum or minimum,
(c) has a local maximum at x = 2 and is continuous but not differentiable at x = 2.
7.* Find the absolute maximum and minimum values of the function f (x) = x3 3x + 1 on
the interval [0, 3].
8.* Let f (x) = (x 1)(x 2)(x 3)(x 4), x R. Show that the equation f 0 (x) = 0 has
three distinct real roots. [Hint: Use Rolles theorem]
9.* Let f (x) = x9 (4 x)8 , x R. For the function f , find all the critical points and find a
local maximum and a local minimum.
Q10-11. For the following functions, identify (if they exist) (a) intervals of increase and
decrease, (b) local extrema, (c) intervals of concavity and inflection points, (d) horizontal or
vertical asymptotes, and (e) use this information to sketch the graph.
10. y = xex 11. y = x + 3x2/3 .

21.* A company manufactures expensive hockey jerseys. Its cost (in dollars) for a run of x
hockey jerseys is C(x) = 2000 + 10x + 15 x2 . How many jerseys should the company produce

per run in order to minimize the average cost per jersey, C(x) = C(x) .

22.* On a certain day in Ho Chi Minh City, the temperature T (in o C) could be modeled by
the curve T = 0.0004t4 0.12t2 + 33, 12 t < 12 where t is the time in hours after noon.
Find the maximum and minimum temperatures and the times at which they occurred.
23. A piece of wire of length L is bent into the shape of a rectangle. Find the maximum
possible area of the rectangle.
24*. A rectangular storage container with an open top is to have a volume of 10 m3 . The
length of its base is twice the width. Material for the base costs $10 per square meter.
Material for the sides costs $6 per square meter. Find the cost of materials for the cheapest
such container. [Hint: Take the dimensions of the box to be width x, length 2x, height h.]
25.* Miss Thao owns a small hotel with 30 identical rooms. She finds that if she charges
a price of $12 (or less) per room per day, all the rooms are rented. For every $1 increase
in price, two rooms remain vacant. Each day, maintenance costs $4 per rented room and
$1 per unrented room. What price should Miss Thao charge in order to maximize her daily
profit? [Hint: Profit = revenue costs.]
26.* Use Newtons Method to find the root of the equation x3 + 3x + 1 = 0 in the range
1 x 0, correct to 5 decimal places.
27. The first positive solution of sin x = 0 is x = . Use Newtons Method to calculate
correct to eight significant figures, taking 3 as the initial guess.

28. Use Newtons Method to find the solution of tan x = 4 x2 , correct to 6 decimal
places.
29.* You are offered a loan of $1000 to be repaid by instalments of $100 every month for a
year. It can be shown that the equivalent yearly interest rate is r% where r = 1200(x 1)
