Investigations in Science 7 March 24, 2017

What we did this week:

This week we learned how to complete a Punnett square. On Monday and

Tuesday, we took a few notes and immediately started practicing how to fill in a
Punnett square if you know the parents genotype.

Two days this week (depending on the class period) we started an activity
where lab groups were challenged to complete more and more challenging work and
see how hot they could get. We started with a mild Punnett square worksheet
that students worked collaboratively on. When they were finished, they had their
paper checked by an adult. If they completed it perfectly, they were awarded a
Minion buck. If not, they went back and fixed any errors. When they mastered
the mild worksheet, they moved on to the medium station with slightly harder
Punnett squares. They again, got the sheet checked by an adult and when they
successfully completed the medium worksheet, they moved on to the hot
station and worksheet. The students that mastered Punnett squares easily, even
made it to the very hot station. Students were able to move at their own pace
and moved as they mastered the different levels.

Most of my classes had Mrs. Cole (counselor intern), come in to talk to

students about different study strategies. She introduced them to 2 different
websites that can help them study. One is Kahoot. Kahoot is a game based website
that turns studying into games.
https://getkahoot.com/?utm_name=controller_app&utm_source=web_app&utm_me
dium=link Then she also showed them Quizlet. Quizlet is a website that turns what
you need to study into flashcards, games, quizzes, etc. https://quizlet.com/ They
looked at their learning style to see how they learn best. When they were done,
they looked at the vocabulary we have been practicing every day and completed a
studying technique based on their learning style. If your child did not see Mrs.
Cole this week, they will see her on Monday, in class. If your child uses either of
these websites to study for their Punnett Square quiz, send me a screenshot
of the computer screen and I will give your child 5 Minion bucks for using a
different resource other than their study guide.
