Mars Pgina 1
Rationale:

In the near future begins the exploration and colonization to Mars. There are projects
and studies for the start of a new era, exploring and colonizing Mars. Increasingly there
are companies that invest in these projects. But there is a title of Master specialized in
studies of the planet Mars. In the near future would be a good job to advise the future
companies who want to explore and colonize Mars.

Degree: Master in Mars studies.

Objectives of the study:

Specialist training (technologists and scientists) in all areas related to the planet Mars,
giving access to the doctorate in space theme (technological or scientific research).

Provide adequate training to design, develop, and research in the field of science and
space technology: propellers, ships, launch, ways to colonize Mars and monitoring
stations, the development towards the exploration of Mars.

Provide multidisciplinary knowledge of science and technology to apply to the planet

Mars that allow them to work in the development of real projects in the business sector,
Government and the public making research in the area of science and space technology
applied to the planet Mars.

Develop knowledge and skills enabling them to deal with the resolution of complex
problems for which it is necessary to integrate and relate the apprehended in different
(and complementary) specific areas of science and space to be applied to the planet
Mars.

Profile of the graduate:

The graduation of the Master studies of Mars is a researcher, is an adviser, is a future

project manager able to conceive, design, implement, and undertake a research project,
from entrepreneurship, develop ideas, solutions to develop exploration and colonization
to the planet Mars. This program of studies can also lead to jobs in private enterprise or
public administrations that require an advanced knowledge of the planet Mars.

The duration of studies is four (4) semesters. Students are required to attend three
semesters of taught courses while the fourth semester is dedicated to the diploma
project.

A is an intensive year worth 75 ECTS. It consists of three types of modules:

Mars Pgina 2
CORE MODULES are mandatory taught modules designed primarily to deliver
academic program content and are broad and interdisciplinary in their scope.

Introduction to Space and Mars (10 ECTS)

Interdisciplinary Mars Studies (20 ECTS)

PRACTICE MODULES are mandatory student-activity focused modules, designed to

deliver experience in the application of academic program content in a broad context.

Team Project (12 ECTS)

Individual Project (12 ECTS)

Internship (15 ECTS)

The 12-week internship is usually carried out in a space organisation or other host
institution. Supported and advised by space university or others institutions, students
identify their internship opportunities in accordance with their particular
interests/career goals.

ELECTIVE MODULES are shorter, optional, taught modules designed to deliver

academic program content. They are narrower and more discipline-focused than core
modules. Students must take two elective modules.

Space Propulsion (3 ECTS)

History of exploration towards Mars and their vehicles (3 ECTS)

Space Architecture, colonization and Human Performance in Mars

(3 ECTS)

Space and Mars exploration Systems Engineering and Design (3 ECTS)

Astrobiology (3 ECTS)

Study of Mars, about characteristic and atmosphere, etc. (3 ECTS)

Space and Mars, future Negotiations and Business Strategies (3 ECTS)

Space, Mars and Entrepreneurship (3 ECTS)

Study of Mars, about culture and mythology (3 ECTS)

To be completed in full-time mode from September of one year to September of the
following year or in part-time mode by completing one or more modules per year within
a maximum of seven years.

A single module:

Thesis Project (45 ECTS)

1. To enhance students individual knowledge in a given area of intellectual enquiry

significantly above its initial level.

2. To develop students individual research, design, development, problem solving,

communication, organizational and project management skills.

3. To allow students to apply the knowledge gained in the first year of the institution
apply relevant principles in a multidisciplinary context.

4. To refine students communication skills in a variety of forms, e.g. oral presentations,

written reports, graphically, etc.

Introduction to Space and Mars

1. To introduce students to the fundamental MSM disciplines and build a firm

foundation for interdisciplinary study in subsequent modules.

2. To develop students transferable skills, including intercultural awareness, time

management, team working, written communication and oral presentations.

Interdisciplinary Mars Studies

1. To extend students knowledge of the disciplines and enhance their understanding of

the interdisciplinary links between them.

2. To demonstrate the integrated and interdisciplinary nature of space and Mars

activities.

Mars Pgina 4
Team Project

1. To provide students with experience in interdisciplinary, intercultural and

international teamwork.

2. To develop in students the relevant skills (e.g., research, problem-solving, design,

communication, organizational and project management) required to perform a
significant project in a team environment.

3. To allow students to engage with and apply principles learned elsewhere in the course
and apply them in a context.

Individual Project

1. To provide students with experience of performing a significant individual piece of

investigative work characterized by a requirement for independent initiative, self-
organisation and critical thinking.

2. To develop in students a professional level of communication (orally, graphically and

in writing)

3. To encourage students to explore the current limits of knowledge and demonstrate

originality and creativity.

Internship

1. To allow students to apply their knowledge and skills to on-going activity in a real-
world space and Mars context.

2. To provide students with the opportunity to establish professional links within the
global space and Mars community.

Structure

The programme is conceived as an advanced masters programme and as such it

requires applicants to have successfully completed an initial masters programme in
either the humanities and social sciences, exact sciences and technology or biomedical
sciences.

The interdisciplinary nature of the programme is expressed by the common core of 25

ECTS in introductory coursework. These courses are mandatory for every student. They
acquaint the student with the different aspects that together form the foundation of
Mars-related activities. The backgrounds of the students in programme are diverse, but
all students have the ability to transfer knowledge across disciplines.

Mars Pgina 5
Depending on their background and interests, students have the opportunity to
deepen their knowledge through more domain-specific optional courses, for a total of 20
ECTS, covering the domains of (A) Space Law, Policy, Business and Management, (B)
Space and Mars Sciences and (C) Space Technology and Applications, with the
possibility to combine the latter two.

For the masters thesis (15 ECTS), students are embedded in a research team of one of
the organising universities, or in an external institute, organisation or industrial
company, in which case an academic supervisor is assigned as the coordinator of the
project. The masters thesis is the final section of the interdisciplinary programme, in
which the acquired knowledge and abilities are applied to a complex and concrete
project.
