Casa Systems Remote PHY Solution

Remote CCAP PHY Node (RCN) and

CCAP Service Card (CSC8x10G)

Overview

Casa Systems C100G is an award-winning CCAP solution that combines a DOCSIS 3.1
CMTS and an Edge-QAM in a high density, high availability 13 RU platform. The platform
and modules support the CableLabs DOCSIS 3.1 standard, and are backward compatible
Casa Systems with prior DOCSIS standards. Deployed by some of the worlds leading service providers,
Remote-PHY the C100Gs software defined architecture, industry-leading density, and integrated video
solution provdes capabilities provide a clear competitive edge in the delivery of ultra-broadband services.

Support Casa has long been a leader in access network solutions for cable service providers. We
are continuing our technology leadership with a solution for distributing access functional-
Full CCAP ity to meet ever-growing capacity demands. Casas Remote-PHY solution, designed to
CableLabs RPHY specifications, stays within CCAP framework, allowing service providers
Features
to evolve smoothly to a distributed access solution which is managed like current CCAP
devices, supports all current CCAP services, and requires no changes to existing cable
modems or set top devices.

Our solution consists of a Remote CCAP PHY Node (RCN) and a new card for the C100G
or C40G, the CCAP Service Card (CSC8x10G) for aggregating RCNs. In this architecture,
illustrated to the right, the DOCSIS and EQAM MAC functions are centralized in the CCAP
Core (the C100G/C40G located in the headend/hub), and the DOCSIS and EQAM PHY
functions are in a remote node (the RCN) closer to the subscribers. 10G Ethernet or 10G
EPON transport can be used between the C100G and the RCN.

CCAP Service Card (CSC8x10G)

The CSC is a new line card that can be deployed in

Casas C100G or C40G chassis. The CSC provides the
DOCSIS and EQAM MAC functions and performs traffic
aggregation for the Remote PHYs. The CSC supports
8x10G interfaces over which DOCSIS and EQAM services
are carried over layer 2 tunnels to the Remote PHYs. The
CSC card can support up to at least 32 RCNs/10Gbps
link. Pluggable SFP+ optics are supported for a pay
as you grow business model. The CSC can be used as
either an 10G Ethernet line card or an 10G EPON line
card by using the appropriate SFP+ transceivers. All
other CCAP components are unchanged.

Narrowband Digital Forward (NDF) and Narrowband

Digital Return (NDR) are supported along with 2
separate Out-Of-Band (OOB) interface pairs for the
seamless transport of (i) analog OOB signaling between
legacy set top boxes and headend OOB modulator and
demodulators and (ii) telemetry to nodes, power supplies
and amplifiers over the digital network.

A C100G (and C40G) can be deployed with a mix of

CSC8x10G
integrated CCAP cards (i.e., DS8x96 or DS8x192 and
US16x8) and CSC cards, allowing the operator to provide

Each R-PHY module supports 1.2 GHz (full spectrum) downstream and 100
MHz mid-split upstream. Service group options for DOCSIS 3.0 and / or
DOCSIS 3.1 are shown in the following table.

An RCN with 2 RPHY modules can support 2 service groups (SGs). Each
RPHY module in an RCN can have its own 10Gbps EPON or Ethernet uplink
and a standby port for 1+1 port protection. Alternatively, the RPHY modules
within a large RCN can be daisy chained together and connect to the optical
network via a single 10G port with standby.

Casas design takes into account the fact that service providers may need to
locate the RCN in locations that are not as secure as typical headend sites,
neither from an environmental nor external threat perspective. The RCN is
waterproof and can work in temperatures ranging from -40C to +60C. It is
managed through the headend C100G integrated CCAP rather than through
a direct management interface. For security purposes, this prevents change
of configuration or alteration of the behavior of the RCN through direct
access. The management/control traffic between the headend C100G and
the RCN is secured by IPSec to guard against man-in-the-middle attacks.
User data between the cable modem and the C100G is secured by DOCSIS
BPI+ protocol. Video traffic is secured by DVB Simulcrypt, PME, or PKE, in the
same way as in an integrated CCAP.

Key Benefits

As with any distributed CCAP solution, an RPHY architecture allows an operator

to increase density and subscriber bandwidth with a minimal increase of headend
equipment. Benefits of the Casa Systems architecture over alternative architectures
include the following:

Lower complexity, lower cost. Retaining the MAC functions in the headend
reduces the complexity and costs of the node. Specifically, reduced complexity
means fewer failures and thus, fewer truck rolls. MAC functions have historically
changed more frequently and more dramatically as a result of new standards.
Keeping these functions in the headend means fewer instances of software
upgrades across the network.

Strong security. The node is not as secure a location as a headend or hub. In

the Remote PHY architecture, all encryption/decryption and key management
is performed in the headend/hub. Thus, user traffic at the node is automatically
protected.

Continuity and simplicity. Defined within the CCAP framework, the Remote
CCAP PHY Node (RCN) supports all current CCAP services and can be introduced
into the network without requiring changes to existing Cable Modems or set top
devices. Further, from a management perspective, the RCNs are presented as
extensions of the CCAP core, and collectively managed as a single, large CCAP.

Graceful migration. Keeping MAC functions centralized enables a more graceful

virtualization approach in which management and control functions can be
virtualized first, followed by virtualization of MAC functions.

Inter-operability. Casas solution is designed to meet the CableLabs Remote PHY

standards (including the RPHY OSSI). This allows for interoperability between
different CCAP Core and RPHY vendor solutions without requiring specialized
development or back office upgrades.
