Section 1 Introduction:

As with all students, when the Personal Project was assigned;

I didnt exactly know what I wanted to do. History is a
passion of mine and I enjoy finding out the history of places,
whether its a solitary building or a community. All advice
leading up to the personal Project encouraged us do
something in an area you enjoy and are passionate about as
your interest and desire to succeed will be greater and
hopefully so will the outcome. As such my topic area, history,
was decided, but what would be my focus?

I believe that throughout the 100

years of the Codrington School,
many people have been shaped
thanks to the school. Friendships
were formed, bonds were
created, smiles shared between
everyone. I think that the
centenary of the Codrington
School should be commemorated
in a unique way. I decided to
make a coffee table book on the
school. The book will show,
through images and text, the progress that school has made
over the last century.

Section 2 Investigation:

Section 2.1 Explain and justify your topic of interest.

For my personal project, I chose this topic because I enjoy finding out the history of
historical places. When I was coming up with the personal project idea, I kept on
thinking about all the students that use to attend the school, such as Rain Chandler
and Sandra Toppin. Many of the old girls say Wow, the school has changed but it
feels the same. This always made me curious because, how can a school change
but remain the same. After completing my personal project, I found out how. The
school has changed in many physical ways, such as the new music room although,
after all these years, the student body and the Codrington community has still been
supportive and close. It may be because the school was always very small. Or it
could be that we are all from different places.

I feel the reason why I was so interested in this topic is because ever since I came,
there were stories about past boarders. For example, everyone knows the story
about Gracie, the Codrington ghost. When I found out that old boarders also knew
the story, I was immediately interested. Did one of them know Gracie? What did they
say about Gracie? I found learning about Codrington very interesting and I
immediately wanted to learn more. When we embarked with the personal project
idea, I immediately wanted to do something around the school, which made
particular sense as it is the centenary.

I hope to gain from this project different viewpoints of the school. Currently, I am only
aware of my point of view of the school, hopefully, through the interviews that I will
be conducting, I will get to see different perspectives on the school. I will be able to
see, through the lens of a different person, the school.

Section 2.2 My Global Context

For this project, I will have Orientation in Space and Time as my global context
because I will be exploring personal histories during the project which includes
relationships between and interconnectedness of, individuals and civilizations, from
personal, local and global perspectives.1 This is relevant because people who went
to Codrington when the school first opened have experienced different emotions
towards the school compared to the students who attend the school nowadays. It will
also allow me to delve into the historical aspects behind what people tend to say.

1 " International Baccalaureate / MYP Global Contexts". Dcps.duvalschools.org. N.

p., 2017. Web. 2 Mar. 2017.

4
Another global context that I will use is Globalization and Sustainability which
includes:
- How we organize ourselves
- Structure and function of organizations 2

This global context is impactful because it the whole reason that the Codrington
community still exists is due to how the school was organized and how we organize
ourselves; a lot of the old girls who used to attend the school still are a large part of
the school community such as Rain Chandler, a member of the board. Limitations in
this global context include that I can only focus on organizational structures in the
school.

Section 2.3 My Goal

My goal is to show, using pictures and words, how much the school has changed yet
managed to maintain the same philosophy. The global context of orientation in space
and time, allows me to delve on the topic of time; which can either improve or
worsen the past landscapes. My goal will be difficult to achieve because I have to
rely on external factors such as:

- The cooperation of the people that I will interview/ask for pictures

- The amount of pictures existing
- Number of deceased students/teachers correlated with the school

Section 2.4 Prior Learning

In history, we studied the difference between primary and second sources. Primary
sources being materials directly related to a topic by time or participation such as,
oral interviews, documents, photographs, artifacts, or anything else that provides
firsthand accounts about a person or event.3 A secondary source is any source about
an event in history that was produced after that event has passed. Aside from a
textbook.4

Another skill that has helped me a lot when working on this project has come from an
after school class where Ryan Pannell, a photographer, came into class and taught
us how to take basic pictures. This will be helpful towards my project when I need to
take modern day pictures.

In Art and in Technology, we do a lot of research it the principles of design and how
to make something look visually appealing. The principles of design have really
helped me make sure that my book has a very nice flow and structure. For example,
in art, we learn about balance. If I did not apply this concept for my book, most pages

would look wonky and/or visually unappealing. I also learnt how to make a
specifications table which helped me form a visual idea of the product. Another
important piece of knowledge I learnt from technology was the design cycle 5 which
includes coming up with an ACCESS FM chart and multiple ideas.

Section 2.5 Research

In this project, I used a plethora of sources, ranging from books, to websites, to
interviews. In conclusion, I would not be able to have accomplished my goal of
creating the book without these sources. Below there is a table of the sources that
helped me throughout my project:

Section 3 Planning:
Section 3.1 Criteria I will use
To evaluate my outcome, I need to create a rubric. During the duration of the
personal project, I will refer to the rubric often to make sure that I can get the highest
mark. (Appendix 1)

Each level on the criteria took a tedious amount of time to choose but, I believe that
they are precise. To get a higher level in my rubric, more aspects of the learner
profile have to be used. This rubric has helped me strive to achieve my best
throughout the project, it kept me on track. The rubric gave me a visual of what I had
to achieve if I wanted to get my goal grade.

Section 3.2 Process Journal

My process journal was very useful throughout my personal project. In the process
journal, I was able to write down all the information received and reference it and
keep on track. I was able to write down all the notes and information about Apple
Printing. But later, when I decided to switch to Blurb, I easily compared the two
services (seen in Appendix 2). The process journal was useful to help me see all the
e-mails that I received over the duration of the project and keep them organized
(Appendix 3). The journal helped show difficulties I faced while making this project
(Appendix 4). It shows misfortunes I faced and how I choose to overcome them.

Section 3.3 Reflect on Self-Management Skills

In this project, self-management skills are the key to getting work done on time and
vital for success. Below, you can see my overall timetable:

Date Work Completed on

time?
September - Have my final project idea Yes
- Have the first meeting with my supervisor
October - Conducted interviews and have a No
multitude of pictures.
- 1 secondary source.
December - Gathered all the information needed to Yes
make the book (including modern and old
pictures, and interviews).
- Have the general layout of the book.

8
January - Have the book finished and sent off to No
print
February - Finish the report Yes

Overall, I managed to organize most of my time adequately although sometimes, I

didnt get the amount of interviews that I wanted to get in that time frame.
Section 4 Action:
Section 4.1 My product
Below, using an ACCESS FM chart, I have stated specifica tions for my book.

Specificatio
n

Aesthetic: Designed to reflect 100 years of Codrington. Since

there are going to be many old pictures, I need
them to flow with the modern pictures and keep the
same concept.

My goal is to capture, using pictures and text, the

development of the school. This book will include pictures and
text explaining how the school has changed yet managed to
remain the same. I will try my best to get a level 8 by making
the book full of pictures and words correlating to the book and
the goal and that there are 20 pages in my book.
Cost: To print a book using Apple, the prices can vary. I want
it to be hardcover and landscape. My two-price
choices are either $29.99 (11 x 8.5 inches) or $49.99
(13 x 10 inches). Both coffee table book would be
printed with 20 pages (an extra page can range from
$0.99 to $1.49)
(See Appendix 2)
Customer: It will be designed for a target audience
compromising of those who either have a general
interest on history and schools OR on members of
the Codrington community.
Environment I have chosen to either print with Apple or Blurb as
: they have a good reputation for being environmentally
friendly and they contribute funds towards recycling
schemes and use sustainable sources as materials.
Size: I think that the book should be 11 x 8.5 inches due to
the expensive price if the book is any bigger.
Function: The book is designed to highlight the value and
impact of the Codrington School and its journey
through the last century.

9
Materials & The book will be hardcover because it is more
Manufacturi aesthetically pleasing and it will be made from glossy
ng: paper.

The table above was about the specifications to my original personal project idea,
which would be a hard-cover coffee table book. As I approached January, I realized
that there were many flaws with my product (appendix 4) and that I could sadly not
be able to make a physical copy of the book. I still wanted to make some form of a
book even though I ran out of time to print the book. I opted to make an electronic
book. Below, you can see the specifications table for the new book:

Specificatio
n

Aesthetic: Same as before

Cost: There will be no cost because I will screenshot the

pages from Blurb and display them in a slideshow on
my website.
Customer: Same as before

Environment Since the book will be online, there will be no

Section 4.2 Show my Thinking Skills

Before making the coffee table book I had to do research on multiple things. For
example, I had to research how to make/layout a coffee table book so that it looked
presentable (appendix 5). Applying the knowledge that I had recently learnt from my
research was easy. I made sure that I had a small note pad next to me while I was
designing the book to compare the designs with my research.

Section 4.3 Show my Communication Skills

- Supervisor
My communications skills were tested whilst being with my supervisor. We had
frequent meetings (appendix 6) and we were always communicating throughout

10
the process. I always made sure to listen to the advice that she gave me about
how I was gathering my information or how I could improve my product.
Sometimes, I disagreed with the advice that she gave me and instead of ignoring
it, Mrs. Mila and I communicated and discussed each of our individual ideas and
later came up with a compromise.

- Interviewees
When I was conducting interviews with other people, I had to send out many e-
mails (appendix 3) just to get a simple response. I had to be respectful about the
recipients schedules causing me to have to patiently wait for their response. If
the recipient was able to respond to my e-mail, I made sure to show them my
gratitude and be friendly with them.

Section 5 Reflection:
Section 5.1 Evaluating my Product
Leve Explanation
l
6 I think that in the product, I would score a 6, according to my criteria (appendix 1)
because:
i. There are equal amount of pictures and words
ii. Book is laid out in a neat concise manner
iii. My text doesnt completely support/explain the pictures

I think that I met the goal for my product thanks to the images and text in the book.
Looking through the book, a person could see how the school has changed over
the century.

Factors impacted the quality include:

- Layout: the layout of the book is one major factor that impacted the effect of
the book. If the layout was more cohesive, the book wouldve been of better
quality. When a book is haphazard, people would find it arduous to
comprehend. If I did this instead of making pages that do not correlate with
each other, I think that the book would be a higher-caliber.
- Lack of Photos: I believe that I lacked pictures of the school before the
2000s. In this project, I obtained a total of 52 photographs (appendix 7),
many of which I did not use due to their quality. If I gathered more usable
images, I could have given more visual insight of the school before the
2000s. This was mostly the fault of the people whom I interviewed because
they did not have any pictures of the time or failed to send them to me as
promised.
- Dependence on People: A huge part of my project was based on how
cooperative other people were. One example of one person who helped a
lot with my project was Marsha Hellier, who provided me with photos and
information. But, there was a collection of people that I e-mailed but they
either didnt have any information or simply ignored the e-mail. Corey Scott
was one of these people along with many others. I feel like if I had more
interviews I could have made the book the original 20 pages instead of 16

11
pages.

Section 5.2 Reflect on my Topic of Interest

I can firmly say that throughout this project I gained new knowledge about the
school. Personally, this has made me feel like I should show the school more respect
as I see it in a different light and as a part of the rich Barbadian history.

In this project, I used the Global Context of Orientation in Space and Time. This
means to ask the questions where we are in place and time? To acknowledge the
relationships between, and the interconnectedness of, individuals and civilizations,
from local and global perspectives.6 Throughout the project, I finally learnt the
importance of interconnectivity and perspectives; whether it be in relation to people,
different periods in time, and physical structures.

Thanks to interviews and pictures, I was able to see the Codrington School through a
new light. I was able to see a Codrington without technology; a Codrington with the
same interconnectedness the community still maintains 100 years later.

Section 5.3 Reflect my Personal Learning Journey

ATL What I learnt
Communication Before this project, communication was not a strong point for me.
It was tough for me to communicate with other people. But,
during this project, I had to conduct many interviews (appendix
3).
I learnt how to effectively communicate with people and ask them
for information. I also learnt how to deal with disappointments. I
think that this experience has forced me develop my
communication skills.
Social During this project, I had to collaborate with many people that
later on helped me create this product. Most of these people I did
not know personally but, I managed to work around this problem
and deal with it. I developed social skills during this project
because I reached out and started communicating with people
whom I have never met before.
Self- Throughout this project, I had to be on top of my work constantly.
Management As you can see in section 3.3, I made a chart to help keep myself
on top of all the work I had to complete and I made sure to finish
it before well before the due date, just in case there were any
issues.
Research Many people whom I wished to interview were not easy to
interview. I had to adopt different interviewing styles that I was
used to. For example, I had to do e-mail interviews and oral
interviews. I had to do secondary research which did not include
typing something into google and waiting for the answer. I had to

12
get books on the 75th and 90th anniversary, and I had to extract
only the useful information. I definitely was able to develop the
skill of being able to extract useful information.
Thinking Whether I had to think about the interviews, planning or the
research, thinking played a crucial role in the project. It was
thanks to thinking and intuition that I was able to develop in every
other ATL. Without a doubt, I can say that I have managed to
improve my thought process and how to remain focused and on
task.
