Magazine Title: BEATS

Summary Comment: Overall the student has used a variety of shots, fonts and
layouts but I do not think they have a developed understanding of page layout
and design. This has affected their outcome as the arrangement makes the
magazine look too busy. The colour palette has a strange mix of colour that

MEDIA STUDIES AFL 2016

would not normally be put together. With the two bright colours placed on top of
each other, it makes the reader struggle to see and focus on the text. It also
gives the magazine an immature feel.

Summary Comment: Most of the shots used in the is magazine are mid/mid-long shots. This
follows common conventions of a magazine as the audience can see the styling of the model.
There is not much variety of other shots and this can demonstrate a limited skill in framing a shot.
However, the pictures are of a good quality which creates a professional and realistic look. There
does seem to be some thought in the mise en scene of the photographs, however I am not sure
they really fit the genre of the magazine. Additionally, the background features a lot of bright
colours which takes the audiences attention away from the artist (who should be the main feature
of the magazine). She has used some good integrating techniques. E.g she has cut out the model

from the background, making her much more prominent. This looks really effective. Overall, she
has successfully created a music magazine which includes the general conventions of a magazine
and is therefore her product is easily identified as a magazine.

Summary Comment: The photographs in this magazine are of a very high
quality. The photographer has clearly taken the mise en scene into great
consideration. Although most the shots are mid/mid-long shots, they are of a
faultless standard and are very effective. One can only assume that the student
is a talented photographer. As previously the mentioned the mise en scene is
used to an impeccable standard. The artist style really represents the realistic

styling of a rock/indie musician which would effectively appeal to their target
audience. They have also used a fitting language register which suits the style of
the magazine. This is a quality magazine product and deserves a respectable
grade.
