All trills, unless otherwise notated, are between semitones.

The use of percussion in this piece requires a variety of beaters for dierent timbral eects. Provided on the next page is a
table of shorthand symbols which are used in the score as indicators of which beaters to use at a given time. A double bass
bow is required for bowing the edge of the hi hat (bar 7), and also for stroking against the edge of the tam-tam to produce
sounds similar to harmonics (bar 63).

Striking the tam-tam at precise points on its face is a key feature of this piece. This is described in the score according to
clock face times, i.e. 6 o'clock, and written in bold boxed text in shorthand form as .

The instruction to sweep strings in the piano part at bar 62 requires the pianist to keep holding down the notes indicated with
one hand, and to sweep across the piano strings near the centre of the string, inside the steel bar which runs parallel to the
keyboard across the strings.

The ensemble layout is designed to give the tam-tam a central position, as a symbol of the sun imagery of Blake's poem, but also
practically to give the Percussionist a space in which to move around to be able play multiple idiophones simultaneously or in quick
succession.
