RECOGNIZING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Abstract

Many civilians in the world tend to live a carefree life, however they do not realize that this world

has its cruel side, they may or may not see the tragic events that happen inside a home or even outside of

the household. Partners also tend to usually care for one another, but in other places and states such as

colombia or afghanistan, women dont get the respect they deserve. Many women are beaten by men

based on their gender without thinking twice. Sometimes women are not just hurt physically, they are hurt

in many kinds of different ways. This is what is called gender-based violence. Gender-based violence is

happening all around the world, even in places you least expect it to take place in. This paper will explain

what it is, and what it results into, as well as solutions to the problem, especially a few questions to put

into thought.

Recognizing Gender-Based Violence

Why is gender-based violence an Issue, what is it? Where does gender-based violence mostly

happen? How can people contribute to the problem? While many may want to blame religious leaders for

gender-based violence, the people are the ones who should become informed citizens by studying the

issue, and contributing to a solution. In doing so, people can come up with many ideas and solutions to

solve gender-based violence.

Gender-based violence is violence against women, as well as a violation of human rights/form of

discrimination against women. 1 in 3 women will experience physical, and/or sexual violence by a

non-partner.What this means is that there is a huge amount of women in the world which experience

gender-based violence in the world, this supports my thesis because it explains the statistics and how

many women are discriminated in various countries or states around the world. Gender-based violence

comes in many forms, such as domestic, physical, sexual, and psychological harm to women. Its also not

just women who experience gender-based violence, men are also abused sometimes by partners. In most

cases however, women are mostly exposed to and affected by gender-based violence. This explains that

gender-based violence doesnt just affect women, but other genders as well due to new laws which

involve heterosexual marriage or same sex marriage. Secondly, violence based on gender affects people

in many different kinds of ways such as, physical, emotional, and mentally.

Where does gender based violence mostly happen? Gender-based violence mostly happens in the

mediterranean. Specifically, in a single part of the world, UNData shows that Colombia has the highest

and most frequent percentage of gender-based violence or intimate partner violence. The data given by

UNData shows that females from the ages of 15-49 experience 34-39 percent of gender-based violence.

A recent article similar to the details given shows a woman who stood up to put a practice of

FGM(Female-Genital Mutilation) to a stop. Solani Zapata, the woman who took action, was supported by

an organization called UNFPA joined by the Colombian Welfare (United Nations Population Fund) in

order to raise awareness upon the problem in order to prevent it from being continued. To conclude, the

organization created had significantly solved the problem and stopped others from doing the practice of

FGM, by giving lessons on what it really does, and it had even opened up opportunities for women to

reflect on their rights and their role in decision making, according to the article.

How can people contribute to this ongoing problem? People can contribute to this world-wide

conflict is by raising awareness on the problem, make people see what this issue is doing to impact our

society in a negative way. Specifically, few ways of doing so in order to contribute, you can raise

awareness by letting other people know of whats happening around the world, about the certain types of

gender-based violence in other countries. This would help raise the attention of people because they may

have not known that in the first place. In addition, besides telling others about what is happening, you

could also donate to organizations who are currently working to find a way to prevent gender-based

violence from happening. To conclude, there are many ways to contribute to the issue besides the ones

given above, just pick what is most comfortable for you and help prevent gender-based violence.

Counter Arguments

According to what you have said in your first paragraph, how could you recognize or explain these

problems? Who supports the information? The information is well supported by Half the Sky which was

written by Kristof, N.D, & WuDunn, S. How does the second paragraph relate to the topic, and main idea

of your paper? Surely you must have gotten off track with this paragraph. You may think so, however

FGM is a practice not just done by women, but men themselves. When men sexually rape a woman they

may become infected with FGM, thus, resulting in an infection to the disease, which also results in the
RECOGNIZING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

female clitoris to be cut off. Finally, what if these solutions dont result in being successful, how can you

be so sure if these solutions will work? I know that these solutions will result successful because all

donations given will go to the organization and fund the prevention of gender-based violence, as well as

spreading the information of what gender-based violence does to cause such a negative impact in our

societies. To conclude, I support all of these disagreements and arguments, however I am sure that we can

stop this issue if we all work together.

Conclusion

So, Why is Gender-Based Violence an issue? What is gender-based violence and what are the

statistics? Where does gender base violence mostly happen? How can people contribute to the problem?

We can move forward by becoming informed of the problem and doing what we can to help prevent

gender-based violence and support the prevention of gender-based violence by spreading information

about the given topic, in addition to aid an organization with donations.
