This quarter writing techniques helps develop the idea and flow of the paper. Over the

course of the quarter the learning objectives of UWP 001 were constantly in practice. This

quarter my topics for my papers included a less formal topics. First the Pokemon rhetorical

analysis that examines pokemon and how it maintains its following. Second is the discourse

community project that analyzes how the Davis HvZ community works and interacts with

participants and similar organizations. The rhetorical knowledge and metacognition are topics

that are more encompassing to the main ideas while, research, process, and knowledge of

conventions are more specific to the development of the paper.

Rhetorical knowledge can be determined by the paper analyzing the rhetoric of the

pokemon video games. In the pokemon paper there is a clear analysis of the audience, the

community it has created, and from a digital genre. For the audience I identify the primary

audience as youth (age range) and a secondary audience of young adults. The secondary

audience ages reflect that they were the primary audience when Pokemon first began. Pokemon

also encouraged the development of a community by encouraging players to trade and battle

each other. Rhetorical knowledge is also shown in the discourse community paper. The Davis

Human versus Zombie club uses social media such as facebook to organize games to play. The

Davis HvZ clubs purpose is to set up a fun game quarterly. The community is highly involved

and allows open communication through facebook and the hvz websites for planning and the

game itself. The rhetorical knowledge demonstrated in Pokemon and the Davis HvZ club is less

clear than typical textual source. In the same way the cover of the book appeals to people

differently than the content, The organization and formation of games is full of its own kind of

rhetoric. For instance in the Davis HvZ club, it is important that the rules of the game can be

easy to understand for new participants yet, structured enough to avoid disputes between players.

Realistically Processes are difficult to practically assess based solely off the final

products. The discourse community project should best reflect the process. Because it is a

research paper we should be expected to follow certain discourse and acknowledge previous

works done. For the Davis HvZ club I focus on the Nerf tag club that began the HvZ trend as

well as the reports from other locations that organized an HvZ game. While research is its own

topic it is as well a part of the process along with proper execution. While the amount of previous

research in HvZ was minimal, there were papers on the influence of having non academic events

in an academic setting that was able to explain the benefits that I could not have seen through the

facebook page or playing once. On the other hand the Davis HvZ community had open

communications that relayed events, answered question, and even set up background stories and

themes on the facebook page and on the Davis HvZ site.

The knowledge of conventions is best seen through the language and organization of the

paper. Because both Pokemon and HvZ need to keep things relatively simple so that anyone can

join, the language is not complicated and the dogma is fairly limited. The HvZ club will best

describe it because locally games can have their own rules yet, there still exists a base set of rules

that comes from (town name) where the trend of the nerf tag HvZ games originated. The

knowledge of conventions also applies to how well the format of the paper applies to the MLA

format. The most significant for the paper format should be the works cited page that follows

alphabetical order, properly cited, and any source greater than one line must have a hanging

indent.

The act of metacognition is something that we have been practicing since the beginning

of the quarter. Most meaningfully is that editing should focus around the concept and the key

ideas of the paper. When editing, it is key to not become too attached to a single idea. In the

rhetorical paper on Pokemon the edits after the first draft caused most of the paper to be

rewritten and improved. The most difficult part of metacognition is that a lot of the benefits

obtained from it are not put into the essay but, what are perspective becomes of the topic. While

metacognition can be felt in the pokemon rhetorical paper and the Davis HvZ Club community

paper, it is this paper that spends time looking back at my previous works and to demonstrate my

understandings of my target community and cultural object to the level expected of me within

this course. Metacognition is not something easily observed and is constantly changing.

This course helped develop my view of the bigger picture within a community. This class

expanded on rhetoric where the distinctions pathos, logos and ethos began to blur. The act of

editing and writing the paper became more conceptual and the goal became to sharpen the focus

of the purpose. While I felt that the act of researching was left up to me, any opportunity to take

in first-hand experience and adapt it to the writing is a priceless experience. Lastly metacognition

is the most difficult to appraise because this is how the thought process can expand and relate

information in an a way that reflects critical thinking and understanding. Overall the learning

objectives have been met and in many ways have helped my writing process by helping me focus

on the bigger picture of the paper.
