4.1 Introduction
The beam shown in Figure 4.1 is laterally restrained at the ends and at the points of
load application only. For the loading shown, design the beam in S275 steel.
Two solutions are presented: the full calculation and the simplified approach using
Volume 1[2] (the Blue Book approach).

4.1.2 Loading (unfactored)
Dead loads:
Self-weight ws = 3 kN/m
Point load W1d = 40 kN
Point load W2d = 20 kN
Imposed loads:
Point load W1i = 60 kN
Point load W2i = 30 kN
The design shear forces and bending moments due to factored loads are as shown in
Figure 4.2.

4.2.2 Calculate m LT
Since there is no loading between the lateral restraints at B and C (apart from the self- 4.3.6.6
weight of the beam, which is considered insignificant), mLT can be obtained directly
from Table 18 for a known value of .
is the ratio of the bending moments at points B and C,

i.e. = = = 0.82
moment at B 419
From Table 18, mLT = 0.93 Table 18
For an unrestrained beam, the maximum major axis moment Mx must satisfy the
following conditions:
Mx Mcx and Mx Mb / mLT 4.3.6.2

For the outstand element of a compression flange, the limiting b/T for a class 1 plastic 3.5.2
flange is 9. Limiting b/T = 9 = 9.0 Table 11
The actual b/T = 5.98 < 9.0
Therefore, the flange is class 1.
Since the section is symmetrical and subject to pure bending, the neutral axis is at mid 3.5.2
depth. For this case, the limiting d/t for a class 1 plastic web is 80. Table 11
Limiting d/t = 80 = 80.0
The actual d/t = 41.2 < 80.0
Therefore, the web is class 1.
The flange and the web are both class 1, therefore, the cross section is class 1.

For low shear, the moment capacity for a class 1 section is given by 4.2.5.2
The buckling resistance moment M b for a class 1 plastic section is given by 4.3.6.4
Mb = pb Sx
where pb is the bending strength and is dependent on the design strength py and the
equivalent slenderness LT.

For py = 275 N/mm2 and LT = 58.6, Table 16 gives pb = 217 N/mm2 Table 16
Mb = 217 1830 103 = 397 kNm

419 kNm < 427 kNm
