PEN Subject Title: ENG 020 Prerequisite:

A. Subject Description:
This course is designed to provide students a conceptual foundation and functional skills in research so that they
will be able to apply concepts, principles, methods, techniques and tools of research in preparing a language
research proposal, evaluating research reports and in undertaking a research project.

B. Objectives:
At the end of the course, the students are expected to
1. formulate a language research problem that is significant and clearly stated, and that has a theoretical
rationale;
2. present a review of the literature and related studies that are relevant to the problem;
3. formulate a conceptual framework used in the proposed study;
4. present a research design for the proposed language research;
5. explain the intended procedures for gathering, organizing, interpreting and analyzing data;
6. formulate a valid data gathering instrument pertinent to the problem being studied;
7. present a language research proposal for critiquing and evaluation; and
8. apply standards and criteria for reading and writing research reports.
