This course will enable students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual arts.
Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes through studio work.
This might include drawing and painting as well as the creation of collage, multimedia works,
and works using emerging technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process when
evaluating their own work and the work of others. We will engage in many critiques as a class to
better ourselves as thinkers as well as artists. Prerequisite: Visual Arts, Grade 9 or 10, Open.

If you are taking this course because you love art, you are in the right place! This course will
challenge your perceptions of art, and encourage your own natural abilities. Anyone can create
art, and everyone has an artistic side! Please see the attached list of materials that youll need
coming into this course.

Overall Curriculum Expectations

CREATING AND PRESENTING: apply the creative process to plan, produce, and reflect on a
variety of artworks, individually and/or collaboratively; apply the elements and principles of
design to create art works for the purpose of self-expression and to communicate ideas,
information, and/or messages; produce art works, using a variety of media/materials and
traditional and emerging technologies, tools, and techniques, and demonstrate an
understanding of a variety of ways of presenting their works and the works of others.

REFLECTING, RESPONDING, ANALYZING: demonstrate an understanding of the critical


analysis process by examining, interpreting, evaluating, and reflecting on various art works;
demonstrate an understanding of how art works reflect the societies in which they were created,
and how they can affect both social and personal values; demonstrate an understanding of a
variety of opportunities related to visual arts.

FOUNDATIONS: demonstrate an understanding of terminology related to visual arts;


demonstrate an understanding of conventions and techniques used in the creation of visual art
works; demonstrate an understanding of responsible practices in visual arts.

Assessment and Evaluation


Assessment is an ongoing catalogue of student achievement. Several types of assessments will
be used during the course of the semester. Your course assignments (e.g. sketchbook), tests as
well as your summative evaluation will contribute to your final mark.

Learning Skills and Work Habits


The development of learning skills and work habits is an integral part of a students learning. To
the extent possible, however, the evaluation of learning skills and work habits, apart from any
that may be included as part of a curriculum expectation in a course, should not be considered
in the determination of a students grades.

The six learning skills and work habits are responsibility, organization, independent
work, collaboration, initiative, and self-regulation.
Students will be evaluated based on the scale N needs improvement, S satisfactory, G
good, E excellent.

Academic Honesty
Students are not permitted to cheat or take content as theirs or writing work without citing the
appropriate sources. Student work will be evaluated as theirs therefore the work they create
must belong to them. Consequences for academic dishonesty can lead to serious
consequences for students.

Late Assignments and Classroom Attendance


Students are expected to arrive to class on time. If any student has work that is submitted later
than the assigned due date, it must be approved by the teacher beforehand. Otherwise,
penalties for late classwork will be determined by the teacher.

Unit Overview Assessment and Evaluation Methods


Drawing and Conte: - process marks, student teacher
Students will explore the potential of these conferences, studio projects,
mediums through practice sketchbook work, major assignment
Ink: - process marks, student teacher
Students will explore hatching and crossing conferences, studio projects,
hatching techniques using ink. sketchbook work, major assignment
Painting: - process marks, student teacher
Students will use acrylic paint to create still-life conferences, studio projects,
paintings. They will study famous works by sketchbook work, major assignment
Renaissance artists and contemporary realism
artists.
Collage: - process marks, student teacher
Students will combine elements from print conferences, studio projects,
media to create an assemblage with a social sketchbook work, major assignment
message
Pencil Crayon and Architecture: - process marks, student teacher
Students will explore pencil crayon and pencil conferences, studio projects,
crayon drawings to draw from real life sketchbook work, major assignment
buildings in Unionville.
Media Arts Culminating Assignment - A combination of what has been

Housekeeping

- You are responsible for keeping your work safe! Do not leave your artwork at school.
- Do not bring open beverages to class. Keep them with a lid!
- Ten minutes before the end of class, you MUST CLEAN UP. Make sure all your
belongings are with you and that all utensils are tidied before leaving.
- Respect your peers. This means allowing others to speak, respecting someones space
as well as respecting someone elses propertyespecially their artwork!
- Keep your notes nice and neat! If you need notes because you are absent, youre
responsible for contacting me for them.
