NHS Scotland Ready for Use

The Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre

(SMS-IC) is Scotlands national centre for precision medicine.
Aim As a core aim SMS-IC is establishing an informatics
environment where multidisciplinary groups can safely
collaborate with a variety of datasets and analysis tools,
demonstrate peer reviewed outcomes and where
applicable commission services for clinical adoption.

Establishing multidisciplinary programs for precision

medicine is rapidly becoming a big data issue. SMS-IC
Methods is implementing a collaborative approach to innovation
combining domain expertise in next-generation sequencing
with capabilities in data management, analysis, academic
collaboration and information governance.

While precision medicine could produce a fundamental
transformation in healthcare delivery, such seismic change
Outcome/ requires a collective effort alongside investment in the tools
and technologies necessary to manage the complexities
Results that arise from an unprecedented mass of data.
Based at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, SMS-ICs
model is unique in the field of clinical research, bringing
together the capabilities of NHS Scotland, the Universities
of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and
industrial partners Aridhia (informatics) and Thermo Fisher
Scientific (NGS), to transform patient care.
SMS- ICs Innovation Platform is already supporting
a broad range of programs within research institutions
and programs including Horizon 2020, IMI, MRC,
Innovate UK and NIHR. These funded, disease-specific
programs are utilising a heterogeneous mix of clinical data
types to transform the clinical workflow for NHS Scotland via:
Data management and analytics capability to support
secure handling and management of NHS patient data.
Associated information governance and audit.
Ability to securely de-identify, pool, link and analyse
large-scale, complex datasets to determine the
correlation between genetic features, clinical
phenotype and response.
Supporting and enabling programmes including
CHART-ADAPT, EPAD, AIM-HY and FutureMS,
SMS-IC is at the forefront of efforts to turn research
concepts into clinical practice.

This session will outline how SMS-ICs partners

are collaborating to realise the requirements
Conclusion and deliver an innovative workflow that has
a direct impact on patient outcomes.

FUTUREMS (future-ms.org):
Scotland-wide programme to develop tools that can
predict disease activity over a 12-month horizon for
adults recently diagnosed with relapsing-onset multiple
sclerosis.
