Abstract
The goal of this experiment is to launch the rocket to the 20
meter circle target by using baking soda and vinegar. The
materials that we use to make a rocket are 2 bottles of coke, 5%
concentrated vinegar, baking soda, board, tape, corks, wood
board, tissue paper, colour spray and PVC. We use baking soda
and vinegar by letting them react and make chemical reaction.
The reaction produces gas for the rocket to be able to launch
forward. In the first trial, we set the ratio of 600 ml of vinegar and
40 gram of baking soda and the rocket drops at 25 meter which
above the target 5 meters. We decrease the fuel and set the
baking soda 500 ml and 30 gram of baking soda but our rocket
still go above the target 2 meter. Therefore, we calculate the
proper ratio of 400 ml vinegar and 20 gram of baking soda and
the result was successful, the rocket was drop at 20 meter.

In this experiment, we use the vinegar and baking soda as

the reaction to produce the gas which make rocket launch. If the
amount of gas is high enough, then it pushes the rocket to reach
the 20 meter goal. We set the launcher at 45 degrees and use the
right proportion of the acid and base which are the vinegar and
baking soda. Moreover, we have to design the rocket that will
reach the target straight away.

To launch the rocket and let it drop at 20 meter

target. Another objective is to determine the exact ratio of
baking soda and vinegar that will result in the most
accuracy target.

Method
1. Prepare the materials. Such as: 1 bottle of coke, vinegar, baking
soda, board, tape, corks, wood board, tissue paper, colour spray and
PVC.
2. Measure the Vinegar 400 mL and Baking Soda 20 g.
3. Wrap the tape around the tissue paper that have baking soda inside.
4. Pour the vinegar inside the bottle.
5. Put the baking soda into another side of the bottle and use the cork
to close it.
6. Turn the rocket upside down. Then, the vinegar and baking soda
will mix together and form gas.
7. Put the rocket on the launcher.
8. Wait for few second.
9. The rocket will fly up and fall down to the target.

In the first trial, we use 600 ml of the vinegar and 40 g of

baking soda. Our rocket fly over 25 meters which far from the
target. So, we considered to decrease the amount of vinegar to
become 500 ml and also decrease baking soda to 30 g. The result
is the rocket fly far from the target less than the first trial which is
22 meters, but it also not in the rate of 20 meters. At the last, we
decided to decrease the vinegar to 400 ml and baking soda to 20
g. The solution of our rocket is nearly 20 meter which completely
touch the target but for the last time there was wind blow. So, the
rocket fly tilt to the left because of wind power.

Suggestion

When vinegar reacts with baking soda, the equation is formed as

HCH3COO+NaHCO3 = H2O+CO2
Mixing vinegar, acetic acid, and baking soda, bicarbonate, starts a chemical
reaction that creates an acid-base reaction and produces gas called carbon
dioxide, or CO2, and water. In our best result, limiting reagent is Baking
soda consists of 0.238 mole and excess reagent is 0.332 mole of Vinegar. In
this rocket experiment, for all trials we used angle of 45 degrees. Our group
tried variety of vinegar and baking soda ratio and the first ratio we tried is
600 ml and 40 g and end up going ahead 20m. Therefore, our group
decided to reduce the reactants to be 500 ml of vinegar and 30 g of baking
soda, however, the rocket still landed farther the target. In the end, we
decided to go with 400 ml of vinegar and 20 g of baking soda and it reaches
exactly 20m but goes slanted to the left mainly due to the wind, hence, this
is our best result. One of the error might occur as our group didnt clean the
rocket to be ready for the next trial. This might affect the next trial as the
reactants might mix together with the previous one. Also, we didnt use the
same person to always measure the vinegar and baking soda. So, their
might be slight variations in the level of eyes while reading the meniscus in
the graduated cylinder. To improve our accuracy we will clean our rocket
every times after launching and use the same person to measure all the
reactants to make it as a fair test. Lastly, our group will try to launch our
rocket when the wind is not too strong so that we can have more chance on
hitting the target.
The right proportion of acid and base which are 400 ml
of vinegar and 20 g of baking soda cause the gas that can
make the rocket move. The amount of gas is 7.304 g. Which
make the rocket weight 124.32 move and reach the target at
20 meters.
