Instructional Design Document

Spring 2017
Following the ADDIE model, I will develop a lesson that will assist my students with
how to answer interview questions correctly. As an adult I have experienced the
most anxiety during the interview process. I get this overwhelming feeling when I
look for a job to apply for hoping that my qualifications are up to par. Then there is
the actual interview itself, which tends to make me hope that I am standing out
among the numerous amount of other applicants. With knowing this, I want to
ensure that my students know exactly how to go through that process successfully.

Analysis

The participants of this activity will consist of 8th grade students enrolled in Exploring Careers
during the spring 2017 semester at Drew Academy. The eighth grade career education curriculum
(Exploring Careers) offers students an in-depth chance to discover more about themselves and
the world in which they live. Exploring guarantees their knowledge base is enhanced in such a
way as to formulate mind, body, and spirit to actively partake in and provide leadership to an
ever-increasing global society. In order to achieve each students full potential, this curriculum
digs into areas of personal accountability, leadership, decision-making, and career development.
Drew Academy is the only magnet middle school in Aldine ISD. The Drew staff believes that
each student is capable of achieving academic success. With dedication, hard work and a strong
desire to see each student succeed, we will produce a student body achieving high academic
standards (Drew, 2017). Many of the students attending Drew Academy are considered at-risk
and low income. Below are the demographics as well as STAAR Results from Drew Academy.
This information has been provided to better comprehend the types learners this lesson will
target.

By the end of the lesson students should be able to:


Conduct a job search
Apply for a job
Correctly answer pre-selected interview questions
Evaluate an interview after it is over
The most anticipated outcome of the lesson will be students feeling that the interview process
isnt as bad as many individuals make it out to be. Adults have experienced the most anxiety
during the interview process. Many may receive an overwhelming feeling when looking for a
employment. This may be a result of hoping that their qualifications are up to par to the
employers needs. Then there's the actual interview itself, that one may hope they are standing out
among the numerous amount of other applicants. With knowing this, ensuring that students are
exposed on how to go through the interview process successfully has become of great
importance.
Delivery of the lesson will include a mock job search, application, Powtoon presentation and
evaluation of peers. Accommodations of these delivery tools will be given if needed.

Design
The students will be using Powtoon to create their presentation. PowToon is considered one of
the most user-friendly and most intuitive animation software to date. With PowToon, anyone
(those who arent so technology savvy) can create engaging, animated videos that have a
professional look and feel.The vision of Powtoon is to bring a touch of awesomeness to everyday
communications. Whether youre instructing a class, sending a note to a friend or selling a
product to potential investors.

Students will use Powtoon to create a presentation on 5 correct ways and 5 incorrect ways for
answering different interview questions. Each group will be assigned two interview questions
from the following list:

o What is your greatest strength?

o What is your greatest weakness?

o Tell me about yourself

o Why should we hire you?

o What are your salary expectations?

o Why are you leaving or have left your job?

o Why do you want this job?

o How do you handle stress and pressure?


o What will you bring to the company?

The group is to collaborate on the 5 wrong ways and 5 correct ways on how an individual
should/should not answer their assigned question(s) is an interview setting.

o Example: Why should I hire you?

Incorrect way: I need the money due to me quitting my previous job


because they didnt pay me enough.

Correct way: I will be a great asset to your company with the skills I have
acquired from previous employment. Your company goals line up with my
personal values.

The students may design the Powtoon however they chose (creativity). Students will also, be
paired together by the instructor based on instuctional and physical needs if needed. The attached
video (Introduction Video) will demonstrate how to use the basic functions of Powtoon. This
video will be presented to the students at the beginning of the instruction. Students will be
graded based on creativity, necessities of assignment and how well they work with their
partner(s).

Development

The lesson is designed to be student-centered therefore, the instructor is seen a facilitator in this
enviornment. After the instructor explains the assignment to the students the students are able to
create their own learning by collaborating with others.

Implementation

Monitoring the students regularly throughout the assignment is suggested and highly preferred.
This eliminates or limits students disinterested behavior toward the assignment and their partner.
To effectively do this, the instructor should countinously provide checkpoints for the students.
This could be done by ensuring the students are on a particular slide by the end of the class
day/period. This technique can act as an infomal assessment for the teacher however, it still
allows the students to be creative without restrictions in the student-centered enviornment.

Evaluation

After completion of their Powtoon, the pairs will present their production to the entire class. This
prsentation will give all the students enrolled in Exploring Careers the opprotunity to view and
understand the different styles of answering interview questions in an effective and proper
manner. Students will be evaluated based on creativity, necessities of assignment and how well
they worked with their partner(s). The instructor will check for understanding of the lesson by,
evaluatig the responses of the students and correcting their answeres if/when needed.
