The cultures and cultural landscapes of the Pacific Islands contain elements that diffused,
or spread, there from a variety of places. Humans first came to New Guinea and Australia 40,000
to 50,000 years ago from Southeast Asia, perhaps during a glacial period when the sea level was
much lower than it is now. No one reached the islands farther east for tens of thousands of years.
It wasnt until sailing craft and navigational skills had developed that people from Southeast Asia
began to arrive. By about 1500 BC, the island groups of eastern Melanesia and western
Polynesia began to be settled. Groups also moved north into Micronesia. By about AD 1000 the
far-flung corners of the Polynesian triangleHawaii, Easter Island, and New Zealandhad been
reached. With the exception of Papua New Guinea, the languages of Melanesia, Polynesia, and
Micronesia are all members of the Austronesian (or Malayo-Polynesian) family. Europeans did
not begin arriving until the late 1700s. British Captain James Cook explored the waters around
Australia and New Zealand.
Europeans eventually became the majority populations of Australia and New Zealand. In
the minority on most other islands of the Pacific, they became the ruling political and economic
powers. The Europeans brought with them their languages, religions, political traditions, and
trading economies. The colonial powers also imported workers from various parts of Asia,
adding more ethnic diversity.
CRITICAL THINKING
Now, study the data table provided on the next two pages, along with a map of the region
from an atlas or your textbook. Be sure to read all the notes at the bottom of the table. Then write
a paragraph on a separate piece of paper supporting the following statement: The Pacific Islands
clearly show the effects of the diffusion of many different people and cultures into the region.
Restate in your own words this statement and use as the lead of your paragraph. Evidence from
the table that you can use to support your argument includes the islands political links, ethnic
groups, languages, religions, and exports.
