Verbs that inherently signify acts of giving, e.g., give, pass, hand, sell, trade,
lend, serve, and feed. 2. Verbs of instantaneous causation of ballistic
motion, e.g., throw, toss, flip, slap, kick, poke, fling, shoot, blast. 3. Verbs of
sending, e.g., send, mail, ship. 4. Verbs of continuous causation of
accompanied motion in a deicticallyspecified direction: bring, take. 5. Verbs
of future having (involving commitments that a person will have something
at some later point), e.g., offer, promise, bequeath, leave, refer, forward,
allocate, guarantee, allot, assign, advance, award, reserve, grant. 6. Verbs
of communicated message e.g., tell, show, ask, teach, pose, write, spin,
read, quote, cite. 7. Verbs of instrument of communication, e.g., radio, e-
mail, telegraph, wire, telephone, netmail, fax. 8. Verbs of creation, e.g.,
bake, make, build, cook, sew, knit, toss (when a salad results), fix (when a
meal results), pour (when a drink results). 9. Verbs of obtaining, e.g., get,
buy, find, steal, order, win, earn, grab..
Idiossincrasias lexicais:
Certos usos so mais comuns e mais produtivos que outros, apesar da
semntica comum.
Sally designed him a house. (mais aceitvel)
Sally created him a house. (menos aceitvel)
This phenomenon provides evidence that people store in memory the
specific syntactic patterns that a word is heard used with (see also Bybee
1985, Langacker 1987 for particular usage-based models of grammar).
*Amy took Chicago the road. (Amy took the road to Chicago.)
A regra semntica :
X causes Y to go to Z X causes Z to have Y.
Tem-se, assim, uma conceptual gestalt shift
(Mudana de Gestalt conceptual)
Terceiro problema:
caertos verbos no significam Causar ter:
Joe baked Sally a cake.
(24) Joe drew Sally a picture.
Quarto problema:
1- The subject must intend the transfer and the direct object must be
understood to be a willing recipiente
2- A semntica dos argumentos interfere na interpretao. No s
efeito do uso do verbo. Este no muda de sentido. Ex. Pour a drink
significa preparar um drink.
3- A alternativa mais econmica. the skeletal construction, [Subj
[Verb Obj Obj2]] is paired with a particular semantics. No new verb
senses are required p. 411.
4- Os verbos se acomodam ao sentido da construo. Pour (derramar)
se acomoda ao sentido de causar z receber y, passando a preparar
um drink.
He poured a drink. Ele derramou a bebida
He poured her a drink- Ele serviu-lhe uma bebida.
A semntica da construo:
Polissemia construcional
constructional polysemy: the same form is paired with different
but related senses.
O papel da metfora:
Volio do sujeito
Mais metforas
Mais metforas:
Pura pragmtica...
(87) Jack poured Jane an arsenic-laced martini.
does not imply that Jane will benefit from imbibing the martini, it does
presuppose that she is expected to willingly drink the Martini
Metfora do conduto
She told Jo a fairy tale. (92) She wired Joe a message. (93) She quoted Joe a
passage. (94) She gave Joe her thoughts on the subject.
This class can be represented as follows:
Name of Metaphor: CONDUIT Source Domain: Subject causes Obj to receive
Obj2 Target Domain: Subj communicates Obj2 to Obj Subj: speaker Obj:
listener Obj2: information
13. Prepositional paraphrases
An analysis of the ditransitive construction would not be complete without
some reference to the existence of prepositional paraphrases. That is, many
ditransitive expressions can be paraphrased using either to or for:
(116) a. John gave Mary an apple. b. John gave an apple to Mary.
(117) a. John baked Mary a cake. b. John baked a cake for Mary.
Equivalncia de metforas:
Movimento causado como transferncia
She gave an apple to John
Seria metafrico, pois o movimento da ma interpretado como
transferncia de posse.
Hopper e Thompson (1980): quanto mais alto o grau de afetao, mais alto
o grau de transitividade.
Mas grau de afetao no definido de um modo preciso.
Afetao no estudada ou definida em si mesma, mas ligada a outros
conceitos (objeto direto, telicidade, transitividade)
Tenny (1994) tenta reduzir afetao a aspecto, em especial telicidade. O
autor tenta defender que afetao um conceito independente.
O objetivo do autor propor um modelo unificado de aspecto, que d conta
de suas vrias manifestaes, e que explique os graus de afetao, assim
como sua relao com telicidade.
Testes semnticos:
2= Acarretamento
Se , ento .
Se matou o bandido, ento o bandido est morto.
4- Teste do resultativo
5- Telicidade
Hiptese
the tests group types of dynamic predicates into subset relations regarding
change, where a subset of dynamic predicates take force recipients, a
subset of these entail change, and a subset of these are telic (p. 345)
Graus de afetao:
The crucial factor is specificity: the more specific a predicate is about the
themes progress on the scale, the higher the degree of affectedness.
Ross:
Declarativas analisadas como performativos implcitos na estrutura
profunda:
Ele saiu (estrutura superficial)
[Eu digo a voc que] ele saiu. (estrutura profunda)
(Baker, 1988)
Nas frases acima, o objeto direto (x) deve vir sempre perto do verbo (lose).
Se F o verbo, e G o objeto, ento a regra [F G]. Quando F e G no
estiverem perto na estrutura superficial, ento devem estar perto na
estrutura profunda, o que marcado por [lose x] nas frases acima.
Outro argumento:
3.Frankly, you are drunk.
Em (3) acima, (Frankly, you are drunk), Frankly (F) est sozinho, est
faltando o G, ou seja, o verbo de dizer.
Outro exemplo:
Ele deve estar em casa agora, porque eu o vi indo para l faz uma hora
A segunda sentena uma justificativa do ato de fala e no uma causa do
fato ter acontecido.
A gramtica tradicional chamaria a frase acima de subordinada adverbial
causal.
Como em "No foram ao show sertanejo porque choveu muito"
Outro exemplo:
Ele deve estar em casa agora, porque eu o vi indo para l faz uma hora.
Atuais: Sperber and Wilson (1986); Carston (1988, 2002), Recanati (1989,
1993, 2004), Searle (1978)
What words mean plays a role in fixing when they would be true; but
not an exhaustive one. Meaning leaves room for variation in truth
conditions from one speaking to another. (Travis 1996, p. 451)
Segundo oponente:
Outros exemplos:
Estou pronto
Se cuida
Forma lgica:
Se cuida de X
Perry (1986)
Est chovendo
Estou pronto
No existe no mundo uma situao em que se est pronto apenas. Se est pronto
para algo especfico.
Cap 2.
a) O que dito
b) As condies de verdade
c) A proposio
1. Quantificadores
Condies de verdade:
They took everything, he writes that he has a feeling that everything
ranges over the domain of valuable objects in the house not everything in
the world (Recanati 1996, p. 445
o que dito:
it is clear that in uttering The dog is chewing your hat the literal speaker is not
stating something that entails that there is exactly one dog in the universe (Schiffer
1998, p. 3756).
A proposio:
Permanent linguistic
features of (1) (Every bottle is empty) its phonological and morphological
constituents, its
syntactic structure, the meanings of the lexical items it contains do
not determine the proposition thereby communicated. They cannot do so, for these
features are the same on every occasion when the sentence
is used, but on most of those occasions the speaker would communicate
a different proposition by the sentence. (Stanley and Szab, 2002)
2. Adjetivos comparativos
It is, I think, beyond serious dispute that the truth conditions of Mary
is rich vary across contexts, as vary the interests, focus, and so on of
participants in a conversation. (Richard 2004)
Variao do que dito:
4. Condicionais contrafactuais
O tipo de background assumido define as condies de verdade do contrafactual.
Verdade relativa ao mundo possvel escolhido.
a) If Caesar had been in command [in Korea] he would have used the
atom bomb
b) If Caesar had been in command he would have used catapults
5. Atribuies de saber
Variam de acordo com os padres e evidncias usadas para definir o saber.
6. Atribuies morais
Fred hears Mary say [Its raining]; he doesnt know whether she is
talking about the location where they are; or some other location
perhaps the location of the person to whom she is talking on the
phone. So, in a sense, he doesnt know what she has said. (Perry 1998,
p. 7)
Contextualismo radical
What words mean plays a role in fixing when they would be true; but
not an exhaustive one. Meaning leaves room for variation in truth
conditions from one speaking to another. (Travis 1996, p. 451)
Incompletude semntica
O livro do Joo
O livro que o Joo tem, o livro que o Joo escreveu, leu, emprestou, ganhou, etc
Cap 3.
Logo, esse tipo de argumento deve estar errado, pois pode ser aplicado
indiscriminadamente.
Os autores assumem isso nesse postulado:
(GEN) With sufficient ingenuity, a CSA can be provided for any sentence
whatsoever, and consequently, for any expression.
ambiguity
_ syntactic ellipsis
_ polysemy
_ nonliterality
_ vagueness.
Exemplos
(1) Smith weighs 80kg.
(2) Heres a red one
