Mobile App Summit Highlights Indonesia's Need for Better

Infrastructure and Skills

Players in the mobile

application industry see
lots of potential but also
major drawbacks in
Indonesia, world's third-
largest mobile phone
market.
Network infrastructure
was listed as one of the
hurdles Indonesia needs
to overcome if it wants to
achieve full digitization.
"It's getting better now that 4G is becoming more commonplace in Indonesia, but LTE
network technology still has to be supported in several places," Venkatesh C.R., founder and
chief executive of the 2017 Global Mobile App Summit and Awards, said in Jakarta on
Thursday (26/01).
Other industry players shared similar sentiments, saying infrastructure in Indonesia is still
insufficient to make it competitive against other countries.
"Our company has been around since 2009, and although it is the largest game developer in
Indonesia, we are still left behind in terms of infrastructure, compared to Japan," Agate
Studio cofounder Shieny Aprilia said.
Shieny, who focuses on game beautification, said events like GMASA are needed for
Indonesia to maximize its potential.
"The two major problems mobile developers face in Indonesia are infrastructure and
funding," GDP Venture marketing chief Danny Wirianto said. "Our talent also needs to catch
up with productivity, as our output is not as high as that of other countries."
Danny said talent in Indonesia needs to improve to enter the global market fast. He said
collaborative efforts by foreign players in the industry would also help grow the local market,
especially by sharing knowledge.

Venkatesh believes this would be necessary to figure out what are the different
countries' strengths and weaknesses. He said there high potential in Indonesia to create
mobile apps.
"India is good with coding and Indonesia is good with designing UI [user interfaces]," he
said.
The size of the market in Indonesia also presents great potential, with Sachin Gopalan,
founder of startup counseling firm Chairos International Ventures, pointing out that it is
specifically true in terms of connectivity.
"For a country like Indonesia, you see opportunities to be connected," Gopalan said.
"Technology solves problems, especially for tempeh sellers in small villagers, who can be
empowered.
