Unit Focus: Drawing Unit Dates: February


Grade(s): 1 Teacher: Mr. Jordan Logan

Overview:
This art unit will develop the skills and strategies that the students use on a regular basis in their art work. The unit is
scaffolded in a manner that reflects an attainable degree of development for the students final performance task. The
skills of using straight lines and shapes are key fundamental abilities that are key in the process of drawing. The unit will
tie in various other curriculums such as science and math, with the possibility of social objectives later into the unit. The
focal point of the unit will be on the scenery drawings that comprise the skills learned throughout, as well as a large
portion of the summative assessment of the unit.

Rationale:
I have consciously chosen these two skills to come together as they compliment each other in a way that will develop
the drawing abilities of the students at the same time. The objective of C-10. A Drawing will encompass the entirety of
the unit and bring in different strategies that the students will be able to apply across different subjects. There will be
plenty of formative and summative assessment points throughout the unit, but the evidence will be primarily in the
students efforts to use the strategies as best as they can during the class assignments.

Key Teaching and Learning Activities:
The key moments within the unit are the teacher modeling of the different strategies and skills throughout the lesson
instruction. The building and image shape drawing activities will be the key introductory instructional lessons, followed
by the performance tasks of creating a piece of work using the strategies. The key purpose behind the performance
tasks is not only to assess the students, but also have the students demonstrate their practice and ability in using the
strategies. The teachers role will be key as not only the presenter of exemplars, but also to model the strategies so the
students can better understand the thought process that goes into using the strategies.
