Talk Abroad Account: One session @ $15.00 (This is for the oral exam)

Course Objectives:
Upon satisfactory completion of Spanish 101, the student should be able to:
1.) Understand basic Spanish spoken at a slower than normal pace, some
spoken at
normal pace, and have developed some skills and coping strategies for
filling in
gaps when his/her comprehension is not perfect.
2.) Ask and answer questions on a limited variety of everyday topics.
3.) Be able to describe people, places and things.
4.) Perform some communicative tasks such as greeting, introducing people,
answering a phone, planning activities, and expressing needs and
preferences.
5.) Have some ability to read and write with reasonable accuracy.
6.) Have some knowledge, awareness, and appreciation of cultural aspects
shared by the people of countries in which Spanish is spoken, as well as of
their diversity.

Attendance and Participation:

Attendance is mandatory. Absences will be excused only with an academic (I
will discern what is valid as an academic excuse) or medical excuse by a
Doctor or Emergency Room visit (a note from Health Services does not
excuse you from class). Unexcused absences will adversely affect a students
grade. After two unexcused absences, students will be penalized by 2
percentage points per absence. Students must be on time, and should
remain for the entire class. Unexcused regular tardiness, or early departure,
will be regarded as absenteeism, and penalized accordingly. To earn a good
participation grade, the student is expected to attend class as well as arrive
on time; take an active role in the classroom; make an effort to participate in
class activities and conversation; ask and answer questions; be prepared for
class; always speak Spanish in class. The instructor will provide all the
students with opportunities to participate either individually or in groups.

Homework:
Homework will be given in two ways; short writing assignments from the book
called Entrevistas Interviews and assignments that are completed online.
Writing assignments from the book must be turned in at the beginning of
class and online assignments must be completed by the due date and time.
Late online homework will not be accepted under any circumstances.
Late Entrevista writing assignment homework will be accepted for half
credit as long as it is turned in by the next class meeting. There will be a total
of 7 of these Entrevista assignments. Being absent is not a valid excuse for
not having homework done, or for not being prepared for class. All of the
homework assignments and class lecture topics are on the syllabus.
Homework must NEVER be emailed unless agreed upon by the instructor; it
will not be accepted if the student did not communicate beforehand with the
instructor.

Redaccin
There will be 6 Redaccin writing compositions in this class. Each chapter will
cover a different prompt/theme. The student must be prepared to come to
class on the day of Redaccin, follow the guidelines of the assignment and
write the composition in class. The student will have 15-20 minutes to finish
the composition, which usually requires no more than 10 sentences. Bringing
a Spanish/English dictionary to class is encouraged. The use of
dictionary/translator on electronic devices is not permitted with these
assignments. A missed Redaccin can be made up for half credit.

Tests/Oral Exam:
There will be three written tests during the semester and one oral exam. The
written tests have a listening and written component. No make-up tests will
be given without academic or medical documentation. A visit to Health
Services is not a valid excuse for missing an exam. Please refer to the
attendance policy. For the oral exam, there will be a deadline given for
completion of the oral exam. If the student does not complete the oral exam
by this deadline, the student will not receive credit for this exam. Completing
the oral exam after the deadline is not permitted.
Oral Exam: 4/29/2017 - 5/8/2017 Final exam 9:30: 5/5/2017, 12pm-3pm, 10:35: 5/10/2017 8:00-11:00am 11:40:
5/5/2017 8:00-11:00 a.m.

Final Exam(s):
The written final exam will not be comprehensive and will cover only chapters
5, 6 and 7.

Talk Abroad Oral Exam:

The Oral exam will be conducted via the website TalkAbroad. The TalkAbroad
program is designed to provide Spanish students with authentic conversation
practice by partnering them with native speakers from a variety of Spanish
speaking countries. The student will create an account with TalkAbroad,
choose the conversation partner they desire and schedule a time and day for
the conversation. The student will be graded on how well they ask and
answer questions during the conversation and other language skills.
Instructor and the student will have full access and audio of the conversation
in order to evaluate students performance. A rubric will be given to the
students in order to prepare for this exam as well as a practice session. The
students must complete a half hour conversation for full credit. This exam will
be conducted during the final week of the semester and the student will have
a 10 day window of opportunity to schedule and complete this exam. The oral
exam session costs $15.00 and this amount is included in the necessary
materials for this class mentioned at the beginning of the syllabus.

Extra Credit:
During the semester, students may earn extra credit by writing short
compositions, completing a TalkAbroad session or attending
academic/cultural events.

Laboratory:
The student must complete online work (at least an hour per week), and is
required to watch the video for every chapter.
Using iLrn (online videos, student activities manual, etc) regularly will help
improve the students listening and speaking skills. The online portion is a
mandatory component of this class.

Tutoring Services:
Tutoring is available at the Office of Educational Support Services (ESS).

Incomplete:
The student must have completed 75% of the course work with a passing
grade, and sign the Incomplete Documentation form as required by the
College of Arts and Sciences, in order to be given a grade of Incomplete.
