CORES
The concept of the urban core dates back
to the 1950s when Jean Gottmann identified
Boswash, a more or less continuous urban
corridor stretching along the American east
coast from Boston to Washington DC. Similar
agglomerations have since been identified
throughout the world. With the exception of
the Eurocore (see page 336), the worlds ten
most populous cores are dominated by at
least one city of over 5 million inhabitants
that acts as a financial and cultural driver.

The proliferation of urban cores found in

Asia and the increasing economic might of
their central cities offer an intriguing look
into both present and future: through its
combination of population density and
GDP growth, it appears that east Asia is
emerging as the worlds demographic
and economic center, an urban core of
global proportions.

A-Z WORLD
By imposing quantitative analyses according
to almost any conceivable criteria - suicide,
life expectancy, military expense - the world
divides in two with disturbing consistency.
One half, labeled here the A World, is
developed - increasingly old, obsessed
with security, its development carefully
controlled by rules and regulations. The
other, the Z World, is developing - young
and vigorous, yet unstable and disordered.
Certain nations, such as China and Russia,
straddle both worlds, potentially providing
windows to the advantages of both A and Z.

FLIGHTS
While air travel in the west, particularly the
US, came to a near stand-still following
September 11, eastern routes, particularly
those centered around SE Asia, continued to
flourish. Two years later, as Asia fell into the
grips of SARS hysteria, the Asian airline
industry suffered losses more devastating
than 9-11 had been for the west.
As The US and Asia attempt to recover,
Europe, Africa, and South America -
relatively unaffected by either event - now
appear by default to have the healthiest
markets for air travel.
