CVEN9806 Prestressed Concrete Design

Hollow Core Slab Design - Major Assignment 2016
Figure 1 shows a hollow core slab cross-section similar to the product produced by Hollow Core Concrete Pty
Ltd (see http://www.hollowcore.com.au/). The hollow core slab is to be used as a simply supported member
supported between precast beams. The span of the hollow core slab unit is 8.5m. There will be a 75 mm topping
of concrete cast in-situ. The topping concrete is not to be considered in any of the structural calculations except
as an additional dead load at service. The hollow core slab is to be designed as a fully prestressed concrete
member. The development length for the strands is given in Figure 2.

1. Design the prestressing using 12.7 strands and provide a structural working drawing for the hollow core
slab section.
2. Give a graphical representation of the stresses at transfer and service load through the span (every 0.5m)
showing the stress limits on the diagram.
3. Estimate the losses including the elastic shortening losses through the span (every 0.5m) and show these
on a chart.
4. Give a graphical representation of the stresses (take account of the losses estimated in section 3 above),
at both transfer and service load through the span (every 0.5m) showing the stress limits on the diagram.
5. Calculate the flexural strength capacity at transfer and under full loads (take account of the losses
estimated in section 3 above), through the span (every 0.5m) and show these on a chart along with the
design ulitmate moment due to the factored loads. Check the ductility through the span.
6. Calculate the shear strength capacity at transfer and under full loads (take account of the losses
estimated in section 3 above), through the span (every 0.5m) and show these on a chart along with the
design ulitmate shear due to the factored loads.
7. Calculate the deflection (take account of the losses estimated in section 3 above), through the span
(every 0.5m) and show these on a chart along with the design ulitmate shear due to the factored loads.
8. Calculate the transfer strength capacity (take account of the losses estimated in section 3 above), through
the span (every 0.5m) and show these on a chart along with the design ulitmate transfer loaidng due to
the factored loads.

The assessment will depend on the thoroughness, clarity, presentation and quality of the design and especially
the merit of the working drawings. The assignment should be undertaken in groups of no more than three
people.
The Final Submission is due on Tuesday 24th May Week 12.
