ACT ONE

FADE IN:

EXT. HAVANA, CUBA - LA CABANA PRISON - DAY

INSERT: La Cabana Prison, Havana, Cuba - April, 1959

A steaming hot day. As visitors enter the prison, LA GUARDA,


FIDEL CASTRO’s ragtag revolutionary guard, give each one a
handheld fan.

INT. LA CABANA PRISON

CHE GUEVARA, wearing his signature beret, presides over a


show trial of a dozen Americans. Their Cuban lawyer, SERAFIN,
pleads with Che while his ASSISTANT simultaneously translates
into English for the accused.

SERAFIN
La revolución promete no ejecutar
sin un ensayo, sin prueba. Cómo
podemos apenas-

ASSISTANT
(overlapping)
“The revolution promises not to
execute without a trial, without
proof. How can we just-”

CHE
Mire, Serafin, si tu prejuicios
burgueses no permiten que usted

ASSISTANT

EXT. LA CABANA PRISON - COURTYARD - DAY

Three Americans are lined up against a wall, hands tied


behind their backs. A La Guarda squad raise their rifles, aim
and FIRE. The Americans slump to the ground. Che walks up to
each one and FIRES his pistol into their heads. Then the next
group of Americans are summarily led to their execution.

EXT. HAVANA, CUBA - NIGHT

The cityscape reflects in the waters of Marina Hemingway.

INT. PRESIDENTIAL PALACE

A gala is underway. Cuban revolutionaries in dirty fatigues


mingle with Russian military types, and men and women in
formal attire. Some dance to Zapateo, a flamenco-derived folk
music. VILMA ESPIN GUILLOIS translates into English for her
husband, RAUL CASTRO, to a tuxedoed Frenchman, CLAUDE MOREAU.

VILMA
(Cuban accent)
No, Claude, my husband - Raul -
“wishes America were less puerile
in its judgement of our revolution.
When you write this, tell them we
are Marxists, not Communists.”

MOREAU
(French accent)
I’ll print the truth as I see it.
But he cannot expect the French
public, even the communists among
them, to believe President Castro’s
Cuba is not a Soviet satellite - in
practice, at least.

VILMA
(simultaneously to Raul)
Voy a imprimir la verdad como yo lo
veo. Pero no se puede esperar que
el público francés, incluidos los
comunistas entre ellos, de creer
Presidente la Cuba de Castro no es

RAUL

Raul kisses her cheek. Fidel raises his glass in salute to


Che, who is standing among some Russian military men. Raul
nudges Vilma and nods towards Fidel.

FIDEL
Today, Ernesto de la Serno is dead.
Long live a great patriot and
Cuba’s newest citizen, Che Guevara!

THE CROWD
¡Viva Fidel! ¡Viva la revolución!

FIDEL
¡Viva mi amigo, Che Guevara!

Everyone salutes Che as Fidel hugs him warmly.

CHE
Algúien traiga vodka, ahora.
¡Vengan aqui!

Vilma and Moreau watch as some boorish Russians pour their


mojitos into flower pots and SWIG bottles of vodka.

MOREAU
(to Vilma)
Whom did you say was puerile?

Vilma looks away in disgust. Fidel comes by, hooks Raul’s arm
and pulls him towards Che and the Russians. Vilma nods and
smiles at Raul, then turns to Moreau.

VILMA
Do you have a moment?

Moreau nods and follows her outside to the balcony.

BALCONY

A carnival atmosphere fills the streets, punctuated by bursts


of GUNFIRE. Vilma gazes ruefully at the ketches, schooners
and yachts lazing about the harbor.

VILMA
Puerto deportivo de Hemingway...
This city is ours again and we still
call the harbor “Marina Hemingway.”

MOREAU
“A rose by any other name would
smell as sweet.”

VILMA
Marina Chekov. How does that smell?
(Moreau gets it)
You fly to Washington tomorrow?

MOREAU
Tomorrow night, yes.

VILMA
I would like you to deliver a
message to your friends there. Ask
them if they would be willing to
assassinate Cuba’s newest citizen.

MOREAU
(taken aback)
Are these your words, Vilma?

VILMA
Raul’s. Fidel is too blind to see
the Russian strings on Che’s back.

EXT. CIA TRAINING FACILITY, THE FARM - DAY

INSERT: The Farm, CIA Training Facility at Camp Peary

Clad in fatigues, PAUL “BAZZO” BARRY and CARLA DILAURIA cover


a grueling obstacle course. They reach a rifle range where a
Green Beret INSTRUCTOR hands them sniper rifles. The
Instructor ogles DiLauria but she ignores him. Firing at
targets up to 1500 yards away, Bazzo easily hits the farthest
ones, winning an approving nod from the Instructor.

EXT. HARVARD UNIVERSITY - DAY

A SPOKESWOMAN holds a news conference on the steps of Widener


Library.

SPOKESWOMAN
Yes, Fidel and Raul Castro will
arrive Thursday and stay to Sunday.

NEWSMAN #1
And what’s her name, Raul’s wife?

SPOKESWOMAN
Vilma. She won’t be making the trip.

NEWSMAN #1
I thought she translated for them?

SPOKESWOMAN
Spanish is one of many languages we
speak fluently here at Harvard.

NEWSMAN #2
What about the one with the beret?

SPOKESWOMAN
Ernesto Guevara de la Serno?

NEWSMAN #2
That the one they call Che?

SPOKESWOMAN
Yes. He won’t be coming.

EXT. E STREET - COCKROACH ALLEY - MORNING

The Capitol Dome looms in the cityscape of Washington, D.C.


In the foreground, a gray building with no identifying signs.

INT. LATHAM’S OUTER OFFICE

COLLETTE DOWD is hanging up the phone when Bazzo enters.

COLLETTE
Time to slay the fatted calf.
(Bazzo looks quizzical)
The prodigal son returns.

BAZZO
Oh, yeah.

He still doesn’t get the reference.

LATHAM (O.S.)
Collette.

LATHAM’S OFFICE

Collette enters. Utilitarian, with a television, cabinets


with combination locks, and two rotary-dial telephones - one
red, one gray - on a metal desk. The TV is on. The Head of
Domestic Operations, WARREN LATHAM, is at his desk.

COLLETTE
You bellowed?

LATHAM
I need that list of arms dealers.
(Bazzo follows her in)
Bazzo - I see you made it back from
training in tact. Where’s Carla?

BAZZO
In the Hole. I passed Kensington in
the hall, looking sour as ever.

LATHAM
That’s no way for my Head of Section
to talk about the Deputy Director of
the Western Hemisphere Division.

Bazzo mugs apologetically just as STEWART KENSINGTON enters.

COLLETTE
Good morning, Mr. Kensington.

Bazzo quickly straightens up. Kensington nods to Collette.

KENSINGTON
Warren, the Miami station’s been
complaining up the line about its
arms shipments coming up short.

The phone RINGS O.S. Collette leaves to answer it.

LATHAM
I know. I just asked Collette to
bring me-

KENSINGTON
Can’t expect our Cuban exiles to
take on Castro’s La Guarda without
arms, even if they can’t tell a
rifle from a banana. See that it
gets actioned, will you.

Kensington nods perfunctorily to Bazzo, then leaves.

BAZZO
There goes the poster boy for the
Ugly American.

Collette reenters and hands the list to Latham.

COLLETTE
That was Claude Moreau on the phone.

BAZZO
That reporter for Le Monde?

COLLETTE
Uh huh.

BAZZO
He still a contract agent for SDECE?
(pronounced suh-DEK)

LATHAM
Yes, but mostly French Intelligence
just debriefs him nowadays.

COLLETTE
Now it’s your turn. He wants to
meet you for lunch. Sounded urgent.

LATHAM
Alright, set it up. Meanwhile, let’s
see if we can help the Miami station
recoup some of its missing rifles.

BAZZO
(watching TV)
No hay problema para la revolución.

INSERT: On TV, chillingly graphic images of a La Guarda


firing squad; Che firing his pistol at the prisoners, and
later smiling and charming a group of reporters.

Appalled, Latham remarks to himself, quoting from


Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” Act I, Scene V.

LATHAM
“One may smile, and smile, and be a
villain.”

INT. UN PLAISIR FRANCAIS RESTAURANT - DAY

A crowded little bistro where The Beltway Elite busily engage


in conversation. Latham and Moreau have an aperitif.

MOREAU
Raul believes Che’s relationship
with Russia will result in Cuba
becoming another Russian satellite.

LATHAM
So much so he’s willing to turn
Cuba pro-West.

MOREAU
If you’ll do Che he will.

Still circumspect, Latham finds the remark darkly amusing.

LATHAM
And who’s supposed to take the fall
for this? The Russians?

MOREAU
Well, that’s not for me to say, now
is it?

LATHAM
No. What about Fidel? He and Che
are pretty tight, you know.

MOREAU
He’ll be devastated; so much so Raul
believes he’ll be a non factor.

LATHAM
I don’t know. This sort of thing
can go very wrong. For one thing,
how do I know Raul will keep his
word? He can say anything he wants
to now, but after Che’s gone...

MOREAU
He’s always kept his word with me.

LATHAM
You’ve got nothing at stake here.

MOREAU
No? I’m sitting here delivering
this message to the head of CIA’s
Domestic Operations Division. That
alone makes me a marked man. Look,
I’m not advocating a thing here,
Warren, but Raul’s only here to
Sunday. So if you are going to act,
you’ll need to act now.

LATHAM
Can’t. For something like this, I’d
have to get Division approval first.

MOREAU
Kensington? Or his boss, Berard?

LATHAM
What - does Le Monde have a copy of
our internal org chart?

MOREAU
(drolly)
I’m having trouble getting updates.

LATHAM
(sarcastically)
I’ll see what I can do.

INT. BERARD’S OFFICE - DAY

Plush, with an anteroom. Latham; Kensington; and WILSON


BERARD, Director, Western Hemisphere Division, are there.

BERARD
It’s very short notice, Warren.

LATHAM
Too short for me, sir.

KENSINGTON
Could be a perfect opportunity.

LATHAM
To do what? Go in, guns blazing? All
hell’d break loose. Besides, who the
hell knows what Raul’s really up to.

KENSINGTON
There’s a Communist regime in there
now. Killing QUACK would seriously
weaken them in the West.

LATHAM
All Latin America would see is us,
meddling in Cuba’s internal affairs.

KENSINGTON
So we rock the banana boat. So what?
Raul doesn’t want Cuba to be a
Russian satellite. What other excuse
do we need? One less scruffy Marxist.

BERARD
But Raul’s hardly distanced himself
from the Soviets lately, Stewart.

KENSINGTON
How can he? One wrong move and he
could end up on the wrong side of a
Revolutionary Tribunal himself.

LATHAM
And our people right along with him.

BERARD
Alright. Time’s short, so let’s try
to advance both fronts at once.

BERARD (CONT'D)
Warren, I want an assessment on Raul
and a plan to remove Che on my desk
as soon as possible. Get onto the
Intelligence Desk for their input.
Meantime, I’ll see about getting
White House approval.

The meeting over, Kensington and Latham stand.

KENSINGTON
(haughtily)
Shouldn’t be a problem there.

LATHAM
That’s what worries me.

EXT. AT SEA OFF BARLOVENTO, CUBA - NIGHT

The Cuban Coast Guard nears a boatload of anxious Cuban


Chinese attempting to flee the island. A floodlight shines on
them as the CUBAN CAPTAIN speaks through a bull horn.

CUBAN CAPTAIN
¡Itirón a! ¡Repito, itirón a!

The Cuban Chinese ignore the command and continue toward open
sea. Suddenly, the sailors turn their machine guns on the
men, women and children. The SLAUGHTER is quick and bloody.

INT. LATHAM’S OFFICE - MORNING

Latham and Collette are intently watching TV.

INSERT: On TV, captured Cuban Chinese, their dead and their


wounded are taken off a Cuban gunboat by La Guarda members.

LATHAM
Where’d this happen?

COLLETTE
Off the coast of Barlovento, Cuba.

The red phone RINGS; Collette answers it.

COLLETTE (CONT'D)
2-3-6-2...Yes, I’ll tell him.
(she hangs up)
Bill Nealy’s on his way over.

LATHAM
Good. See when SMOTH is free today.

Collette leaves. Latham opens a folder labeled Che Guevara


and leafs through it. Collette leans back in.

COLLETTE
The Intelligence Chief is here.
(Nealy enters)

LATHAM
Thanks for stopping by, Bill.

Collette closes the door behind BILL NEALY, who sits.

NEALY
I read your brief on Che. Risky.

LATHAM
So what can you tell me about
Raul’s relationship with him?

NEALY
Raul revered him when they fought
together in the Sierra Maestras.
But Che saved his admiration for
Fidel, even when El Jefe behaved
more like a bourgeois leftist than
a militant guerilla, speaking at
colleges and whatnot.

LATHAM
Trying to win the hearts and minds
of a few coeds, no doubt.

NEALY
Wish I’d thought of that. Anyway,
until recently Raul and Che had
been creating an intelligence
service with help from the KGB. But
then Raul objected to Russia’s
meddling in Cuba’s internal
affairs. Within a few days, Fidel
had taken Raul’s place.

LATHAM
So you think Raul’s offer is legit?

NEALY
Yes. He’s been adamant about Cuba
remaining independent of Moscow,
and a lot of Latin America is
waiting to see what happens. I
think you can view Raul’s
conspicuous absence from La Cabana
prison as both a rebuke of Mother
Russia and a way of distancing
himself from Che.

LATHAM
Who’s up to his knees in blood from
those show trials.

NEALY
And that may be what’s finally put
the skids under him in Raul’s eyes.

The intercom BUZZES; Latham answers it.

LATHAM
Yes?

COLLETTE (O.S.)
Lawrence Jones says he can meet you
at 10:30, Lafayette Park.

LATHAM
Good. Oh, tell Carla I’ll want to
see her, soon as I get back.
(he hangs up)

NEALY
Your meeting with SMOTH - problems
on the M.I.6 front?

LATHAM
Just a little rearguard action.

EXT. LAFAYETTE PARK - MORNING

Latham walks up to LAWRENCE JONES of M.I.6, who’s tossing


peanuts to a squirrel.

LATHAM
Birds avoiding you now, Larry?

JONES
Ah, the connoisseur of wit. Which
one was that - dim, half or nit?

LATHAM
Man, you’re cranky without your nap.

JONES
Yeah, well I’ll just catch a few
winks now while you blather on.

They start to stroll through the park.

LATHAM
Hear any noise recently about Raul
Castro and Che Guevara?

JONES
Their relationship’s become strained
over the goings-on at La Cabana.

LATHAM
The firing squads.

JONES
It’s not just the pound of flesh
Che’s extracting, it’s the wide net
he’s cast; rounding up students,
intellectuals, union organizers,
homosexuals - anyone who openly
questions Marxist doctrine or whom
he deems unfit for society.

LATHAM
Enough to make him a liability?

JONES
(surprised)
Are your people planning a surprise
party for Che?

LATHAM
Raul sent us an invitation.

JONES
Really...Fidel called Nixon a fool
and a liar last month, and now his
brother wants to dance with you.
Something smells worse than that
dog mess you’re about to step into.

Latham jumps awkwardly to avoid stepping in dog feces.

JONES (CONT'D)
Those dance lessons aren’t working.

LATHAM
Shut up. That’s why I’m putting
DiLauria on Raul. Try to see if
he’s legit.

JONES
I’d sleep on this one, Warren.

LATHAM
Can’t. I’ve only got ‘till Sunday.

JONES
Hmm. Let me look into it; see if I
can come up with anything for you.

INT. THE HOLE - DAY

Sparse, with two desks, two lockers, locking file cabinets


and wall maps. DiLauria is at her desk. Latham is standing.

DILAURIA
It’s gotta be a set up. Raul’s as
fanatical as his brother.

LATHAM
SMOTH thinks so too. That’s why I
want you to get next to Raul.

DILAURIA
(reticently)
He just got married.

LATHAM
I know.

DILAURIA
So why not get a girl from Plans,
then? I’m sure you’ll find one
there willing to sleep with him.

LATHAM
I’m sure, too. But I need a fast
intelligence assessment by someone
who can knock him off his feet.

DILAURIA
Me?

LATHAM
You. I’d ask Bazzo, but I don’t
think Raul goes in for rough trade.

DILAURIA
So what do you want to know?

LATHAM
What his intentions are, and will
he turn Cuba pro-West.

ACT TWO

INT. OPERATIONS ROOM - AFTERNOON

Abuzz with activity; there’s a PURL of telex machines. Maps


of sections of the U.S. fill one wall. On them are red, green
and white stickpins. Bazzo listens in as Duty Officer JARED
STOKES briefs DiLauria.

STOKES
(reading from a folder)
Operation Manifest Destiny...Castro
arrives Friday morning at 10:07, Pan
Am flight 101. Then it’s a limo ride
to Harvard where he’s staying. The
Secret Service will travel with them
and the Massachusetts State Police
will provide local security.

DILAURIA
Am I staying on campus?

STOKES
No, the Sonesta in Cambridge.

BAZZO
Yeah, I stayed there once. Toilet’s
at the end of the hall.

She gives Bazzo a mock baleful look.

STOKES
Their advance team asked for two
journalists. El Jefe’s being
interviewed by the Wall Street
Journal, but Raul asked for a
freelancer from New York, Sheila
James. That’ll be you.

DILAURIA
Why her?

BAZZO
Because when Castro’s advance team
was at the Bureau of Consular
Affairs getting their visas, they
overheard a nasty exchange
questioning James’s patriotism
after she wrote a favorable article
on Cuban land reform.

DILAURIA
So who am I writing this piece for?

STOKES
Monthly Review.

DILAURIA
Ugh, Monthly Review...

BAZZO
It was that or the Penny Saver.

DILAURIA
I’d rather clip coupons. Monthly
Review’s budget wouldn’t keep us in
paperclips.

BAZZO
Exactly, so remember to dress down.

INT. CHINESE RESTAURANT - DAY

Latham enters. A waiter nods familiarly. A man brushes past


Latham, excusing himself with a polite nod. As Latham sits at
a booth, he removes a folded ticket that was placed in his
coat pocket, a ticket to a Baltimore Bullets basketball game.

INT. ARENA - EVENING

The Bullets are playing the Boston Celtics. Latham takes a


seat alongside YURI GVOZDEV, the KGB’s Washington rezident.

LATHAM
You’re a Bullets’ fan, Yuri?

YURI
(Russian accent)
No, Celtics.
(Cousy steals the ball)
Look! Cousy picked his pocket!

LATHAM
He’s almost as good as your man. I
barely felt it this time.

YURI
This time? It’s only the second time
he’s passed you anything...I hope.

LATHAM
Why are we taking in a game, Gvozdev?

YURI
I’m hungry. Let’s get a hotdog.

They get up and head to the concession stands.

ARENA CORRIDOR - MOMENTS LATER

They stroll, eating their hotdogs.

YURI
Nixon and Kennedy ratchet up the
number of missiles we have every
time they have a press conference.

LATHAM
So how many do you have?

YURI
With the H-bomb who needs numbers?

LATHAM
It’s the numbers that scare people.

YURI
(fretfully)
And win elections.

LATHAM
The KGB worried about our election?

YURI
I worry whenever our fingers touch
the same spot on the globe, Warren.
It always leads to crisis.

LATHAM
And each crisis raises the chance
of war.

YURI
Yes, it’s time to...take it slow.
(hands Latham an envelope)
For Under Secretary of State
Christian Herter. Among other
things, it says we will not go to
war over the crisis in Berlin.

LATHAM
I hope the Celtics get creamed.

EXT. STATE DEPARTMENT BUILDING - MORNING

People head to work. A sign reads: Department Of State.

INT. OFFICE

Under Secretary of State is stenciled on the door. A name-


plate on the desk reads: CHRISTIAN HERTER. He is with his
deputy, RICHARD RUDLIN. Herter anxiously checks his watch.

RUDLIN
I asked CIA to pass those Russian
ICBM estimates to Nixon’s people.

HERTER
They’re not verified. That’s why I
left them off the N.I.E.

RUDLIN
I know, but someone on the Armed
Services Committee is leaking stuff
to Kennedy, so I thought we should-

HERTER
No! You’re my Assistant Secretary of
State, not Nixon’s campaign manager.
(checks his watch again)

RUDLIN
Something up?

HERTER
I’m expecting Troyanovsky.

RUDLIN
He’s coming here? Why?

HERTER
The Soviets are putting their toes
in the water, seeing if we’ll warm
up to the idea of detente. They
even want Nixon to visit Moscow.

Just then a sergeant escorts OLEG TROYANOVSKY in and leaves.

HERTER (CONT'D)
Oleg!
(they hug warmly)

TROYANOVSKY
Good to see you, Christian. And
you, Mr. Rudlin.

RUDLIN
(they shake hands)
Mr. Ambassador.

HERTER
Unfortunately, Mr. Rudlin has a
previous appointment and can’t stay.

RUDLIN
(caught off guard)
Oh, yes. Well, I hope to see you
again soon, Mr. Ambassador.

TROYANOVSKY
Perhaps at dinner later.

An abashed Rudlin smiles, then leaves the room.

EXT. LOGAN AIRPORT - MORNING

A sign welcomes visitors to the airport.

INT. ARRIVALS LOUNGE

The Castro entourage - a mix of fatigues and business suits -


and U.S. Secret Service agents are met at the Arrivals Gate
by Massachusetts State Police, reporters and DiLauria.

DILAURIA
Comandante! Comandante Raul Castro!

RAUL
Sí?

DILAURIA
Por favor, señor, permítame
presentarme mí mismo - yo soy
Sheila James y estoy escribiendo
una pieza para la Monthly Review.

RAUL
Muy bueno! But please, I prefer to
speak English while I’m here. Come.

He hooks her arm as a Secret Service agent leads the way.

EXT. LOGAN AIRPORT

The Cuban entourage splits in two - Fidel gets into Limousine


One, Raul and DiLauria get into Limousine Two.

LIMOUSINE TWO

Two La Guarda members play with the car’s buttons, much to


the annoyance of the driver and a Secret Service agent.

DILAURIA
There’s quite an assembly to hear
you tomorrow, Comandante.

RAUL
You mean to hear my brother.

DILAURIA
No, you too. I’ve read some of your
speeches. They’re pretty impressive.

RAUL
Not nearly as well crafted as my
brother’s.

LATHAM
He must be under some pressure.

JONES
They’re spending a third of their
GNP on defense; they had a terrible
winter, lost half their wheat crop;
and the ruble isn’t worth the paper
it’s printed on. It’s expensive
shoring up world communism.

LATHAM
Maybe Khruschev isn’t the dumb
peasant we pegged him to be.

JONES

Seems the People’s Militia claim
the Russians hadn’t gotten prior
approval to restock the ship there.

LATHAM
That true?

JONES
No. We’ve long suspected she was
really a spy ship; apparently, so
have the Chinese. They boarded her
with guns drawn, ostensibly to
remove a few too many egg rolls.

We blame Che’s assassination on Red
China as retaliation for the gunboat

KENSINGTON

BERARD

that as no less than a provocation.

BERARD
And all of Latin America would see
firsthand the fractious relationship

KENSINGTON
Fine, so we drop our troops there-

for Peace program. Then economic
and technical aid from the
International Cooperation Agency.
We take a page right from the
Communist’s own playbook and go

It’s a C-130 to Santo Domingo, then
the red-eye to Santiago de Cuba.
From there it’s the train to Havana.

LATHAM
Why leave from Santo Domingo?

STOKES
There are referees there from ICUMSA.

LATHAM
Oh. Who?

BAZZO
The International Commission for
Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis.

STOKES
Their people are flying on to Cuba to
discuss sugarcane processing methods.

LATHAM
The referees...

STOKES
Bazzo will have papers identifying
him as a one. Now, the Havana
number two, Bob Moore - know him?

BAZZO
No, he’s new down there, isn’t he?

STOKES
Yes. He’s been in touch with a
group of Cuban Chinese who’ll
provide you with a diversion at La
Cabana.

LATHAM
Did he say what type of diversion?

STOKES
He’s still working on that. Now,
from the time you arrive in Cuba to
when you check into the hotel, the
station will have no contact with
you whatsoever.

BAZZO
To lessen the chance of my discovery.

At 1800, Saturday, Moore will call
you at the hotel. If the Che hit is
on, he’ll ask to meet you for
dinner. If it’s not on, he’ll ask
to meet you for a drink.

LATHAM
What time is the hit planned for?

BAZZO
2200, last execution of the day.

LATHAM
And the weapon?

STOKES
Long-range sniper pistol. Moore will
leave it in a suitcase at the train
station. Bazzo will get the claim
check passed to him at the airport.

LATHAM
And the route out?

STOKES
Flight to Port-au-Prince with ICUMSA
on Sunday. If for any reason Bazzo
can’t make the flight, we’ve got a
bolt-hole ready in Chivinco. Moore’s
arranged for a fishing boat to take
him here, Cayman Brac.

Stokes points out the route on a map. Latham nods, though


something is worrying him. Bazzo notices this.

BAZZO
Don’t worry. Moore won’t be dumb
enough to leave the address of the
bolt-hole with the pistol. I saw to
that. We’ll get the address here in
a signal from the Havana station.

LATHAM
Ok. I’ll be in Kensington’s office.

INT. KENSINGTON’S OFFICE - DAY

Plush. Latham enters. Kensington is brushing his tuxedo.

LATHAM
I was just thinking, maybe we should
reconsider our plan to kill Che.

What? Why?

LATHAM
Without Russia’s support, Che knows
his dream of a worldwide Communist
revolution is finished. And so is
he. I just think the Russians would
muzzle him rather than risk detente.

LATHAM
Troyanovsky just met with Herter.

KENSINGTON
We have a better chance of putting
a man on the moon than we have of
detente with the Russians. And
besides, we asked the White House
to approve assassinating Che based
on our assessment.

LATHAM
One that’s still incomplete.

Kensington matches Latham’s rising anger.

KENSINGTON
For the moment. We abort this now
we’ll look like fools. What would

LATHAM
The truth. That our assessment

Laurie enters. Latham is frustrated, but with nothing more to


gain he drops the folder on the desk and leaves.

CLIFTON (CONT'D)

INT. LATHAM’S OUTER OFFICE - EVENING

An exasperated Latham enters, walking by Collette and Nealy.

LATHAM
How’d that idiot get to be Admiral?

COLLETTE
Years of dedicated service?

LATHAM’S OFFICE

Nealy follows him in. Latham hangs up his coat.

NEALY
Warren, the Russians are holding up
a sugar purchase of 345,000 tons
from Cuba, and they’ve yet to
approve $100 million in credit until
they’re assured the revolution will
succeed. I’d say the time is ripe.

LATHAM
Seems that way.

NEALY
Sorry?

LATHAM
I wonder how many more chances
we’ll get to end this Cold War.

Khruschev may have opened a dialog
with us, but he’s still answerable
to the Politburo. And they’ve made
it clear that nothing short of our
annihilation is acceptable. Time to

The Castro entourage dines with members of the ruling elite.


Raul emerges from a private meeting room with another man;
Raul is clearly disheartened. DiLauria walks up to him.

DILAURIA
That was John Foster Dulles,
Secretary of State, wasn’t it?

RAUL
Yes. We were discussing a proposal
of mine. Unfortunately, it’s always
the same, American or Russian, the
questions invariably turn to which
side of the Atlantic we favor.

DILAURIA
That’s the world we live in.

RAUL
Señorita James, the world we live
in is as much defined by north and
south, as it is east and west.

EXT. WHITE HOUSE - NIGHT

Limousines queue at the entrance.

DINING ROOM

The MURMUR of elegantly attired guests and CHAMBER MUSIC is


heard as they drink and dine.

BALLROOM

People mill about in small groups. Rudlin and Kensington,


loose-lipped from champagne, are off to the side.

RUDLIN
We shouldn’t have let him in Mexico.

KENSINGTON
Batista didn’t consider Fidel that
much of a threat back then.

stop pussy-footing around over

KENSINGTON
There’s been some reluctance, but
I’ve engaged someone who worked for
me when I headed the Soviet Desk,
Phil Case. He’s very keen to act in
our best interests. In fact...

A full moon illuminates the pleasure boat against the sea.

The Captain eyes Case curiously.

Munching on C-Rations, Bazzo gazes out the window.

EXT. SANTIAGO DE CUBA - AIRPORT - NIGHT

A dimly lit sign reads: El aeropuerto de Santiago de Cuba.

INT. AIRPORT

A woman wheeling a baby carriage barely brushes against


Bazzo, then disappears among a weary crowd of travelers.

BAZZO

Exits the airport and hails a taxi. Once inside he pulls a


claim check from his sport jacket pocket. The taxi pulls up
to the train station. Bazzo alights and enters the station.

He walks up to a counter with the sign Reclamo de Equipaje


and exchanges his claim check for a large suitcase.

Lugging his suitcase to the curb, Bazzo hails another taxi.

EXT. HAVANA - EL BARRIO CHINO - NIGHT

A CUBAN-CHINESE MAN carrying a bag walks down an alley and


enters a door with Chinese characters stenciled on it.

INT. FACTORY

A handful of Cuban-Chinese men work deliberately and quietly


packing boxes with handheld fans.

The Cuban-Chinese Man pulls a small pack labeled C4 - the


size of a deck of cards - from his bag and hands it to a
worker who packs it along with handheld fans inside a box
labeled Ventiladors.

The Cuban-Chinese Man then goes to a phone and dials.

sits at a desk bearing his nameplate. He answers the phone.

MOORE

hablando...Ah, gracias.

Satisfied, Moore hangs up the phone.

ACT THREE

INT. HOTEL ROOM - MORNING

Bazzo opens the suitcase and removes a set of La Guarda


military fatigues. He cuts open the fabric liner and removes
a slim wooden case. He opens it to reveal a sniper pistol,
ammunition, photos of La Cabana, notes and a map.

He looks at one photo captioned: Calle de la fortaleza donde


se ubican vendedores de manualidades.

INSERT: Fort street where crafts vendors are located.

Bazzo examines a photo of a chapel captioned: Capilla sin


culto. Vacía. Se utiliza para el almacenamiento solamente.

He finds it on the map, next to a yard labeled: Ejecuciones.

As expected, the Vice President has
authorized Che’s assassination.

LATHAM
Pending a favorable assessment.

Let’s not forget there’s a limited
window of opportunity here.

LATHAM
And even less time to assess how an
assassination will affect detente.

KENSINGTON

That’s not part of this brief.

BERARD
Gentlemen. A year ago we agreed with
the Washington Post when it said it
would be a mistake to intimate that
Castro's Cuba had any real prospect
of becoming a Soviet satellite. We
can only act on the information at
hand, and right now it supports
Che’s assassination. Warren, how
long will it take DiLauria to
complete her assessment of Raul?

LATHAM
I’m not sure.

BERARD
You have recall arrangements with
Barry?

LATHAM
Yes, we can abort up to the time he
leaves his hotel, at four today.

BERARD
Then that’s your deadline.

KENSINGTON
I hope when DiLauria learns this
she won’t feel compelled to give an
unfavorable assessment.

Stopped in traffic at the hotel entrance, a WOMAN in her car


watches as DiLauria enters the hotel. The Woman grows excited
and rolls down her car window.

DiLauria enters the hotel, seemingly unaware her name was


called. The Woman drives up to the DOORMAN, jumps from her
car and runs after DiLauria.

Keys are inside.

LOBBY

DiLauria recognizes the Woman - it’s KAREN, her sister. She


steps from behind a large potted plant, surprising Karen.

KAREN
Oh! Car-

DiLauria prevents Karen from saying “Carla” by giving her a


vigorous HUG. The Doorman rushes up to them.

DILAURIA
So good to see you, sis.
(to the Doorman)
She’s my sister. I’m in room 508.
(she slips him $10)
Would you park it for me, please?

DOORMAN
(eyes the money)
Yeah, sure.

DILAURIA
We’ll be in the lounge.

As the Doorman leaves, DiLauria hooks Karen’s arm and leads


her to the lounge.

LOUNGE

Typical. Darkened, even during the day. DiLauria and Karen


are sitting at a table, each sipping a Tom Collins.

KAREN
Girl, you almost broke my back.

DILAURIA
Sorry sis. It’s just been so long-
(sees Karen’s oversized

DILAURIA
Raul told me Vilma’s coming here to
finish her master’s. So why would
she bother if he’s planning to throw
in with the Russians? She could go
to Moscow to study, or Europe.

INT. COCKROACH ALLEY - COMMUNICATIONS ROOM

A similar set up. Latham speaks into the phone.

LATHAM
Except we know they’re implementing
socialized medicine, which puts him
right back in the Soviet camp.

Then I don’t know.

LATHAM
There’s got to be something we’ve
missed, something that shows him
leaning either pro-East or pro-West.

DILAURIA
What? As far as I can tell, Raul’s
mostly pro-Cuba.

LATHAM
Maybe we should go over what he
said to- Wait. What did you say?

DILAURIA
I said, to me he just seems pro-
Cuba.

LATHAM
Pro-Cuba...Of course, that’s it.

DILAURIA
What?

LATHAM
(hastily)
I’ll explain later. I’ve gotta get
off a signal to Havana right away,
call off Bazzo.

INT. BERARD’S OFFICE - DAY

The 24-hour wall clock reads 16:05. Latham explains his


theory to Kensington and Berard.

LATHAM
The Russians have been withholding
much needed financial support until
they’re sure the revolution will
succeed. But Raul’s worried Che’s
relationship with Russia will make
Cuba a Soviet colony. So he gets an
idea: Ask CIA to kill Che, and in
return he’ll turn Cuba pro-West. But
Raul’s real goal is to remain
independent, allowing Cuba to play
the superpowers against each other
for food, medicine, weapons.

BERARD
So Barry goes in to kill Che-

LATHAM
Only to find that Cuban Intelligence
has already beaten him to it.

BERARD
They arrest Bazzo for murder and
say they’ve thwarted a coup attempt

Soviets, whom Raul then sends
packing. An example for the rest of
Latin America.

KENSINGTON
(chagrined)
Well, a stitch in time and all.

The phone RINGS; Berard answers it.

BERARD
3-5-0-1...Yes, he’s right here.
(hands it to Latham)
It’s the Ops Room.

LATHAM
Yes...What?!...I coming right down.
(he hangs up)
Havana station couldn’t reach Bazzo.

BERARD
Oh no.

LATHAM
And Moore, the station number two,
has gone missing.

OPERATIONS ROOM

Latham hurries in. Everyone is in a controlled panic.

LATHAM
Essentials, Jared.

STOKES
Moore got a call at 1500 from a
tobacconist - they use his shop as
a drop. Hugh Scott, the Station
Chief, was at Gitmo, so Moore
followed protocol and told the
station secretary he was going
there.

Probably aborted the job and be on
a plane home tomorrow.

If Moore got to him in time.

The gray phone RINGS; Stokes answers it.

STOKES

LATHAM

Jones is on the phone, clearly distressed.

I got a signal from our Havana
station. Cuban Intelligence
arrested a Company man at Marina
Hemingway earlier.

LATHAM

No, but I know it wasn’t Bazzo.

LATHAM

STOKES
Who? Couldn’t have been anyone from
the station or I’d have heard about
it.

LATHAM
I don’t know who. I just know it
wasn’t Bazzo.

STOKES
If Bazzo isn’t on the plane then
he’d have made for the bolt-hole,
where Moore’s contact with the
fishing boat would pick him up.

Latham suddenly realizes...

LATHAM
There’s one other possibility: he’d
go ahead and kill Che, believing it
was in the Company’s best interest.

STOKES
God, you’re right.

LATHAM
Open a direct line with the Havana
station. Relay all information back
to me as soon as it comes in. I’ll
be in Berard’s office. Escort SMOTH

If he’s aborted the job, he’ll be
on his way back.

BERARD
And if he’s decided to press on?

LATHAM
That’s why I asked Larry to join
us. If Bazzo is on the move and we
can’t get to him, then M.I.6 will
kill him.

EXT. HIGHWAY - DAY

A bus with a sign that reads HAVANA speeds along.

EAST HAVANA - BEACH

The Havana bus pulls to the curb of busy el Malecon Avenue.

Bazzo alights, dressed casually and carrying a duffel bag. He


climbs over the seawall and rests on the rocks.

BEACH - LATER

Bazzo has changed into military fatigues and a beret; he


sports a sidearm. He walks back to el Malecon Avenue,
shouldering his duffel bag, and flags down a local bus.

INT. LOCAL BUS

Bazzo sits in the rear. In the distance he sees where the


peninsula juts toward the sea - at its tip, La Cabana prison.

EXT. HAVANA - STREET - EVENING

The local bus comes to a stop. Bazzo steps out, duffel bag in
tow. He walks the narrow street of his reconnaissance photo -
filled with crafts vendors - and enters a barbershop.

INT. BARBERSHOP

An old BARBER sits in the lone chair, fanning himself against


the heat and listening to MUSIC on the radio.

BARBER
Buenas noches, sargento. ¿Qué puedo
hacer por usted?

Bazzo mimes like he’s trimming his sideburns.

BAZZO
Solo un poco fuera de los lados,
por favor.

BARBER
Claro, siéntese.

The Barber gives up his seat to Bazzo. As he prepares to trim


Bazzo’s hair, CANNON FIRE echoes. The Barber is disgusted.

BARBER (CONT'D)
No de nuevo. ¿De verdad tienen que
hacerlo este toda la noche? Estás
asustando a todos lejos de mi
empresa!

Bazzo grins as the Barber cuts his hair and complains.

INT. HARVARD UNIVERSITY - ADAMS HOUSE LOUNGE

The Cuban entourage drink and engage in animated


conversations with literati, academics and politicos.

A CUBAN MAN in a light suit enters. He walks up to Raul and


whispers in his ear.

DiLauria takes careful but discreet notice. Raul glances at


her; they exchange smiles. Raul whispers something to the
Cuban, pats him on the shoulder and ushers him out.

EXT. SURGIDERO DE BATABANO - BEACH - NIGHT

Two U.S. Navy frogmen paddle an inflatable raft toward shore.

LA CABANA PRISON

The long road to the entrance crawls with auto and foot
traffic. At the Prison entrance people grab hand-held fans
from boxes at the door and stream inside. A truck pulls up.

The First Cuban-Chinese Man hops out and pulls a sealed box
labeled Ventiladors from the flatbed. He tries handing it to
a La Guarda member who refuses, pointing instead to several
open boxes on the ground. The Man sets his box there, then
hops back inside his truck, makes a U-turn and drives away.

INT. OPERATIONS ROOM

Everyone is tense, waiting. Stokes has the phone cradled


against his ear. Latham and Jones sit among the night crew.

EXT. LA CABANA PRISON

With his duffel bag over his shoulder, Bazzo walks among the
throng, past the main entrance. He nods absently at La Guarda
members who are preoccupied eyeing the young women.

FORT ROAD

Bazzo walks along the seawall that rims La Cabana. He stops


across from the Chapel and checks his watch: 9:50.

BAZZO

Sees a LIGHT suddenly appear in the top window of the Chapel.

CHAPEL

A figure flits about, then the light goes out. In another


dark window there is the faint GLOW of a lit cigarette.

BAZZO

Tenses. He knows something is wrong. He lights a cigarette


and scrutinizes the people near the Chapel.

An apparent DRUNK, holding a paper sack, leans against a


prison cell door. He HUMS to himself and SWAYS, but his gaze,
firm on the Chapel, quickly switches to the bulkhead.

There, a BLOWZY-LOOKING MAN adjusts the straps on his


sandals. The wind picks up, lifting his shirt and revealing a
PISTOL tucked in the waistband of his pants. The Man quickly
pulls his shirt down.

Bazzo espies a darkened passageway leading into the prison.


He puts out his cigarette and heads towards the passageway.

FORT ROAD

A panel truck driven by a teenage boy in a torn T-shirt


slowly passes before Bazzo. In its rearview mirror Bazzo
glimpses a La Guarda team huddled in the rear of the panel
truck, clenching their rifles.

The panel truck stops a few feet past the Chapel as Bazzo
steps into the passageway.

PASSAGEWAY

Bazzo swears under his breath. As he eases the sniper pistol


from his duffel bag, a GUNSHOT crackles in the distance.

MAIN ENTRANCE

The sealed box labeled Ventiladors EXPLODES violently.

BAZZO

Sees the Blowsy-Looking Man LEAP over the bulkhead. The Drunk
DIVES to the ground, dropping his paper sack. A pistol spills
from it.

MAIN ENTRANCE

Bloodied visitors, La Guarda and prisoners SCREAM and RUN


from the prison, past writhing bodies and detritus.

BAZZO

Watches La Guarda RUN from the Chapel and from the panel
truck. He then RUNS from the passageway and jumps into the
passenger side of the panel truck.

PANEL TRUCK

The teenaged driver is paralyzed with fear. Bazzo has his


sniper pistol aimed at the boy’s forehead. He changes his
mind and kicks the boy out of the truck.

Bazzo throws his duffel bag on the floor, starts the engine
and drives back towards the entrance road.

EXT. SURGIDERO DE BATABANO - BEACH

As the Frogmen haphazardly bury their package, searchlights


suddenly SHINE on them from jeeps on the shore. A La Guarda
team are at the crest of the dunes, rifles at the ready.

LA GUARDA CAPTAIN
(through a bullhorn)
Stay where you are! Put your hands
behind your head and get on your
knees!

One Frogman attempts to flee and is SHOT dead. Slowly, the La


Guarda team close in on the remaining Frogman.

INT. PANEL TRUCK

Bazzo drives along a near-empty road when he notices a car


following him. As the car draws near, Bazzo pulls his sniper
pistol onto his lap.

In the rearview mirror Bazzo sees headlights BLINKING on and


off. They appear erratic but as the sequence repeats, Bazzo
recognizes it. He pulls off the road. He raises the pistol to
the window sill as the car pulls alongside.

DRIVER
(British accent)
Don’t go to Chivinco; you’ll be
arrested. Get in.

Bazzo grabs his duffel bag, leaves the panel truck and gets
into the car.

CAR

The Driver and Bazzo glance at each other.

BAZZO
I haven’t used Morse code since
Korea.

DRIVER
Yeah? You oughtta consider changing
your nickname, Bazzo. I almost
forgot how to make a damn ‘Z’.

A grateful Bazzo smiles.

INT. OPERATIONS ROOM

Stokes is on the phone, listening intently. His grim demeanor


softens as he repeats the information given to him.

STOKES
There was a commotion at La Cabana.
Someone fired a shot into a box of
fans loaded with C4, blowing it up.
Bazzo got out in the ensuing chaos
and is on his way back.

Relief spreads all round. Latham shakes Jones’s hand.

LATHAM
Thanks.

JONES
Told you my man was a helluva shot.

EXT. HOTEL SONESTA - NIGHT

The hotel’s neon sign is lit.

INT. HOTEL SONESTA - CORRIDOR

DiLauria unlocks the door to room 508 and steps inside.

HOTEL ROOM

Karen’s coat and purse are on the bed.

DILAURIA
Karen, you still up?

No answer. DiLauria sees the bathroom door is ajar.

DILAURIA (CONT'D)
What did you do, fall in?

She pushes it open.

Karen is splayed in the bathtub - her throat has been cut


from ear to ear, and her engagement ring has been ripped from
her mangled finger.

Horrified, DiLauria races to her sister.

EXT. HARVARD SQUARE - NIGHT

Stock footage of this famous location.

INT. HARVARD UNIVERSITY - ADAMS HOUSE

The Cuban Man walks along the hallway, stops and knocks on a
door with a brass number 6. Raul answers. The Cuban Man gives
Raul Karen’s distinctive engagement ring. Raul nods and goes
back inside, shutting the door. The Cuban Man leaves.

INT. BERARD’S OFFICE - DAY

Berard is at his desk as Latham enters.

BERARD
Did Barry make it back yet?

LATHAM
Yes, he’s down in the Hole.

BERARD
And DiLauria?

LATHAM
Attending her sister’s wake.

BERARD
(sighs)
Sit down, Warren.
(Latham sits)
You’ll eventually learn what I’m
going to tell you, but I wanted you
to hear it from me first.

LATHAM
Sir?

BERARD
The CIA officer arrested in Cuba was
Philip Case. He works downstairs on
the Soviet Desk and was sent to
Havana by Mr. Kensington, who
confessed as much to me last night.

Latham is furious.

LATHAM
Why the hell did he do that?

BERARD
He felt you were having second
thoughts about Manifest Destiny.

LATHAM
Feathering his own nest, you mean.

BERARD
There’s more to it than that. He
had the blessing of Assistant Under
Secretary of State Richard Rudlin.
And now Rudlin claims that the
operation was the same one we got
the Vice President to approve.

LATHAM
Wait - Nixon read the brief. He’ll
know it’s not the same operation.

BERARD
Rudlin’s convinced him that it was.
What’s more, the White House feels
that the Russians’ gesture of
detente was nothing more than that -
a gesture. They’ve commended Rudlin
and Kensington for their initiative
in the wake of Domestic Operations’
failure to assassinate Che.

LATHAM
But that’s bullshit. Raul was
playing us against the Russians.

BERARD
You and I know that, but Kensington
and Rudlin have convinced the White
House otherwise. As far as they’re
concerned, Domestic Ops is simply
covering its own ass.

Latham is beside himself. He gets up and moves about.

LATHAM
What the hell am I supposed to tell
my people? Bazzo almost got himself
killed. Carla’s sister was murdered.

BERARD
We’re instruments of government,
Warren, nothing more. We suffer the
consequences when some politico
decides to bend the truth.

LATHAM
This isn’t only about Rudlin.

BERARD
Kensington’s a budding politician.
If it were up to me, that would be
the only career choice left open to
him. But he has an angel now, and
there’s nothing we can do about it.

LATHAM
For now.

Warren, I told you this because I
felt you had a right to know, and
because I felt I could count on
your discretion. Don’t let me down.

Latham sighs resignedly.

EXT. COCKROACH ALLEY - EVENING

Latham exits the building, briefcase in hand. He stops and


does a slow burn. Kensington is across the street. He sees
Latham and hesitates.

Latham forces the issue and waits. Realizing he cannot avoid


Latham, Kensington crosses the street and walks up to Latham.

KENSINGTON
Keeping banker’s hours, Warren?

LATHAM
It’s almost eight.

KENSINGTON
Really? Those sessions on The Hill
go on forever.

Latham just stares; Kensington grows more uncomfortable.

KENSINGTON (CONT'D)
Sorry to hear about DiLauria’s
loss. You might have her speak with
the psychiatrist. Wouldn’t want any
of this to linger, it might affect
her judgement.

Latham can barely contain himself. As Kensington starts to go


inside...

LATHAM
Her sister had just gotten engaged.

KENSINGTON
That’s too bad. Well, even a Cold
War has its casualties.

Latham sighs angrily as the two go their separate ways.
