a. According to the article, what are 2 definitions of culture? For some, it may refer to the
appreciation of good literature, music, art and food. For others, such as biologists, it is likely to be a
colony of bacteria or microorganisms growing.
b. What are the 3 layers of culture? The first layer of culture is the body of cultural traditions
that distinguish your specific society. The second layer is a subculture and the third consist of cultural
universals.
c. What is a subculture? Is a culture within a larger culture
d. List the cultural universals. Communicating with a verbal language, using age and gender for
classifications, classifying them based on marriage and descent relationship. Raising children in a
kind of family setting, having sexual division of labor, having a concept of privacy, having rules to
regulate sexual behaviors and distinguishing good and bad behaviors. As well as having a sort of body
ornamentation, making jokes and playing games, having art, and having a sort of leadership roles for
implantation of community decisions.
e. What is the difference between culture and society? Cultures are complexes of learned
behavior patterns and perceptions, while societies are groups of interacting organisms.

3. Define the term stereotype. A generalization, usually exaggerated or oversimplified and often
offensive, that is used to describe or distinguish a group.

a. What are some different categories of stereotypes? Some different categories are sex, race,
age, sexual orientation, religion and physical abilities.
b. What is one of the stereotypes youve heard of that is listed in the 1992 gender study? In this
study, they said that males were typically characterized as adventurous, powerful, domineering and
independent.
c. Why is mass media considered significant to stereotyping? Because mass media plays a
major role in determining the content of our culture
d. Why are stereotypes functional? They are functional because as audience members, we are
bombarded with much information than what we can process.
e. What is the most influential factor in stereotyping? Why? A persons perception result in
people seeing what they expect to see when coming into contact with those specific members they
view with prejudice.

5. Define family dynamics. Family dynamics is the way in which members of a family interact with
each other in relation to their individual goals and preferences.

6. According to this definition, what are your family dynamics? My family dynamics would be how my
parents are the authority figures in my home. While my sister and I, along with my parents are still
very close and we all live together. From there would be my grandparents and aunts/uncles even
though we are all different and like different things, family will always be family.
