Social Action Production Proposal

Name of production:
Powerful Talking

Reason for following this issue:

I chose to follow this issue because I feel strongly that the government is not
spending sufficient money on assisting people with mental health issues.

Length of production:
My social action documentary will be around 10-15 minutes.

Interviewees in production:
Julie M
Gina E
General public

Production angle, how and why:

My social action documentary will be both informative and emotional. It will be
emotional for some viewers because I will be filming people talk about their own
stories and struggles coping with mental health and the scary aspect of it that people
seem not to focus on.
It will also be informative because I will include facts and statistics throughout mainly
showing how many people committed suicide and how many people struggle with
mental health throughout the years and how it has gotten worse.

A production layout (beginning, middle and end)

Opening:
Addressing the issue by opening with archive footage of Nick Clegg, Liberal
Democrats leader from 2007-2015, featuring his speech about the Liberal Democrats
revolutionizing mental health care with 3.5 billions pounds spend.
Footage of Kate Middleton and Prince William talking about how important mental
health is.
Archive footage

Middle:
My interviews with therapist Julie and Gina who has suffered with severe depression
and is maintaining ongoing therapies for this. Public Interviews.

End:
Conclusion on subject and how you can help.
Target Audience and why
My target audience is towards everyone, because any person no matter
what age they are have encountered the social issue of mental health
whether it be themselves or someone they know.

Where your video will be uploaded / shown

I will be showing my documentary video on my own YouTube channel and on my
weebly page.
The organization that I will be interviewing for my documentary will not be using my
video for their own website however; they have allowed me to show it on my own
channel.

List of questions you wish to ask / have answered in your production

(questions I need to know)

1. One in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem in any given
year.
2. Mental health problems are one of the main causes of the burden of disease
worldwide. In the UK, they are responsible for the largest burden of disease 28% of
the total burden, compared to 16% each for cancer and heart disease.
3. Mental health services in the UK are overstretched, have long waiting times and
in some regions lack specialist services. Despite this, public spending is focused
almost entirely on coping with crisis, with only an insignificant investment in
prevention. Mental health research receives only 5.5% (115 million) of total UK
health research spending.
4. Around 50% of women with perinatal mental health problems are not identified or
treated. The costs to the UK economy for untreated perinatal mental health problems
is estimated to be around 8.1 billion for each one-year cohort of births; this is the
equivalent to around 10,000 per year for every single birth in the UK. These costs
are generally the result of not identifying mothers mental health needs or treating
them effectively. However, when mothers are referred, there are known treatments
that work well for most cases.
5. Paternal mental health is also of crucial importance. Postnatal depression in
fathers has been associated with emotional and behavioral problems in their child.

Production
Before you go off and film please be aware of the following.

PRODUCTION TIPS:

Interview in relevant locations

Make sure there is no background noise when filming - ask to turn off all machines or film
in a quiet location and if outside try and use a wind cover and microphone.

Use TWO cameras when filming - One following the interviewer and one following you as
you had with your multi camera unit

Get MORE footage than you need - you can always cut items out but you can't add once
you have filmed

Think about how you want the final product to look before you start filming

Add archive footage (clips, newspaper clippings, footage from news stories etc...) but
ALWAYS reference them on screen and make sure you have permission to use them

Once filming is finished, make sure the following is complete BEFORE you start
to edit your production

footage)
