Introduction: (located at the back of the report)

Purpose: To test and observe the reaction of different concentrated solution inside and
outside the membrane. Hypertonic and hypotonic solution are used to test the osmosis
property.

Concentrated salt solution
Jellies are made of gelatin, starch, and sugar.
Question: How will soaking the Jelly in distilled water affect the size of the candy?

5. 3 Jellies 12. Lab Coat
6. 3 Potato Pieces 13. Goggles
7. Calculator

Methods
Collects the materials that your group needs (3 Jellies and Half a Potato).
Use the knife to cut the potato into 3 pieces.
Use the electronic balance to find the mass of your jelly, remember to lay down a piece
of weighing paper and set to zero.
Record your data.
Record descriptive observations about the jelly prior to the experiment.
Measure the initial volume if the jellies and the potatoes and record your data.
Fill your 1st beaker half way with the distilled water. Put one of your jellies into the
beaker. Set the beaker aside for one hour. Label the beaker using marker.
Fill your 2nd beaker with concentrated salt solution half way. Put your 2nd jelly into that
beaker. Set beaker aside for one hour. Label the beaker.
Put your 3rd jelly into an empty beaker without putting anything in it. That should be
your control.
Put the 4th beaker half way with distilled water. Put one of your potato pieces into the
beaker. Set the beaker aside for one hour. Label the beaker.
Put the 5th beaker half way with the concentrated solution half way. Put your potato
pieces into that beaker and set it aside for one hour. Label the beaker.
Place your last piece of your potato pieces into the last beaker, empty. That is your
control for the potato. Label the beaker.
Make sure you label all the beakers distilled water or concentrated salt solution with
some markers.
After one hour, come back and look at each of the dealers and record the data volume
and mass of both the jellies in two beakers and both the potato in two other beakers.
After record the descriptive data for what the jelly and the potato look like now after
being soaker for an hour.
Calculate the percent change in the size of each jelly and potato:

Analyzing Question:

1. What happened to the jellies after being soaked in distilled water and salt water for an
hour? why? Be descriptive and detailed in your answer. Use your knowledge of membrane
transport.
The jelly that was soaked in distilled water was increased in size, mass and volume
according to the data table after being soaked in distilled water for an hour, because the
environment in the beaker is hypotonic. Moreover, the jellys color is lighter than before
and the jelly is softer. From the experiment, it shows that the jelly have more solution than
the distilled water, so the water from the environment go inside the jelly. In osmosis, water
will move from low concentration solution to high concentration solution.
For the other jelly that being soaked in salt water for an hour, the size, mass and
volume is decreased according to the data table. The jelly was soaked in hypertonic
environment, which have more solution than the jelly, so the water go out of the jelly to
the environment that has higher concentration because the jelly has less solutions in it.

2. What happened to the potato after being soaked in distilled water and salt water for
an hour? Be descriptive and detailed in your answer. Use your knowledge of membrane
transport.
When potato is placed in distilled water, its volume and mass increase because
distilled water is a hypotonic solution, which means the out side has more water, so the
water move into the potato by the osmotic pressure. On the other hand, the potato, which
is soaked in the concentrated salt solution or the hypertonic solution, is decreased in terms
of the volume and mass because the water from the inside of the potato move out of the
potato by the osmotic pressure.

Conclusion: In conclusion, materials that are soaked in hypotonic solution are increase
both in mass and volume, while materials that are soaked in hypertonic solution decrease.
