CHAPTER I

1.1 Background
Vocabulary and sentences are the most important thing for us in learning

another language. It is because they are the basic of the language. In this

research, the researcher wants to know the effect of suggestopedia in increasing

vocabulary mastery in SMP Plus Samarinda.

After I read several journals, I found T. Bowen (2009) said this

approach would be accelerated by up to 25 times over that in conventional

learning method. In this school, I found that a lot of students here do not

master vocabulary, especially for the 7th grade. So, I think this method will be

great for this school and the students, because vocabulary is the element of the

language.

It is hard to apply suggestopedia in Indonesia because the students in the

classroom are pretty much. I have never seen suggestopedia applied in

samarinda. Why? We should to try this method. Because if we dont try it, we

wont know it will work or not. We can also access how the education in our

country is. It is really important for the development of our education. I see that

the education in Indonesia is using the usual method and mostly use

Grammatical Translation Method that we know as an old method. I think that is

one of the reason that student does not like English lesson. Because it is the

most boring method and when the student get bored, they wont concentrate to
the lesson and finally they do not like the lesson, some of them hate it. I think

if we can apply the new method, the other method that can make the class not

feel so bored, maybe we can interest the students.

Suggestopedia is the answer. With the music, relaxation, and games, I

think it will work, we must try this method. Thats why I choose this title for

my thesis. Because I want to know, what is the effect of suggestopedia in

Indonesia? If there are some effects, it will be a great move for Indonesian

education, but if there are no effectts, we must try to discover why this method

not effective in Indonesia. I think all method will be effective in Indonesia. It

depends on the teachers themselves and the style of the teacher itself. How they

teach, attract the student, or just stand, read, and give an exercise. Lozenov said

that the learners need a relaxed but focused state as the optimum state for

learning. In order to create this relaxed state in the learner and to promote

positive suggestion, suggestopedia makes use of soothing, rhythmic music, a

comfortable and relaxing environment, and a relationship between the teacher

and the student similar to the parent-child relationship. That is the point in

suggestopedia, we must build the relationship with our student because it will

help the method work. Music is vital in this method and I found some music

that will help this method. The following composers from the baroque epoch

(XVIIth c.), recommended by Andrea Rohmert as suitable for suggestopedic

learning, have music works, which contain Largo movements: Johann

Sebastian Bach, Arcangelo Corelli, Georg Friedrich Hndel, Johann Pachelbel,

Georg Philipp Telemann, Antonio Vivaldi. Baroque "Largo" movements help

the suggestopedic student to reach a certain state of relaxation, which increases

receptivity.

Suggestopedia has elements that can be used successfully with all sorts of

learners, some of these elements being employed by the teachers and

professors at Foreign Language and Centre at tha Land Forces Academy.

According to Lozanov, who found this method, people can re-integrate what

they learn into their personality and he also assumed that the only major

linguistic problem in the language classroom is memorization of the words and

the patterns of the language and their integration into the student personalities.

The supporters of suggestopedia claimed that memorization in learning through

this approach would be accelerated by up to 25 times over that in conventional

learning method.

The suggestopedic teachers use music as songs in the elaborations and as

classical background music in the concert sessions. They hang colourfully

made grammar posters among other art posters in the classroom, and

sometimes you give the group drawing tasks. They move like actors in the

theaters, use puppets like a show person, and read the text book like poets at

their retical. The teachers attitude and behaviour in the classroom is one of the

key elements which ensure the success of a suggestopedic session.
