UWRT 1102 Spring Midterm Paper

March 1, 2017

A key concept that I am truly engaging with is rhetorical

knowledge because of how I have been able to grasp the audiences

attention with the topics I have picked to write about. An example of

getting the attention of one of my readers was when my peer editing

group member Ashley and Megan both showed interest and said they

"were looking forward to what I would be able to find in my research

about my topic at that point. Another piece of feedback that showed

me that I grasped the attention of the reader was when Ryan edited

the second draft of the developing curiosity essay by commenting

great question and continuing on to say that he is very intrigued

about the project that has been put together.

Another key concept that I have truly engaged in this semester is

critical reading. My improvement in critical reading has lead to me

being able to write drafts that I feel reflect the point that I am trying to

get across in a way that is more desirable and enhances the reading

experience for the audience. Something else that the improvement in

critical reading has allowed me to do is be more helpful as a reader to

my classmates. Before this semester I did not really help anyone

improve their writing other than small errors I saw such as commas or
spelling errors but after reading the articles assigned to us before our

peer editing class period, my method of reading and editing someone

elses paper changed so that I focus on the bigger points such as

whether or not the focus of their paper is truly being emphasized

enough.

The third key concept that I have truly engaged with is

knowledge of conventions. The majority of the times that I have even

had to deal with this concept has not even been for this exact class but

for my liberal studies class that I am taking this semester. Due to the

amount of research papers that we have been assigned to work on in

the class we had to focus on citations for an entire class period due to

the strict guidelines on plagiarism for the papers for the class. The

class period consisted of our professor going through the library

database showing us how the library website can source some of the

books for us and took us to a website giving a detailed explanation on

how to source different formats of information.

One key concept that I struggled with at the beginning of the

semester was composing processes. I would just continue writing until

what I thought I wanted to say would show up but then I would never

go back to check on if it made sense or not which would lead to run-on

sentences. I still struggle with this problem but not as much as I used

to and I plan on improving.
