WEEK V: FETAL-NEONATAL TRANSITION AND NEWBORN INFANT

(0-1 month of age)

Overall WEEK OBJECTIVES:


1. Understand the fetal-neonatal physiology and its changes following birth
2. Know how to assess a newborn through a comprehensive anamnesis and physical examination
3. Understand the WHO essential newborn care (including early initiation of breast feeding)
4. Understand the aspects of neonatal physiology and common problems during neonatal period
5. Know how to do initial and pre-referal management of sick newborn
6. Understand the common birth trauma and its management
7. Know the major congenital anomalies and newborn screening tests.
8. Explain the pathophysiology, common etiology, and management of jaundice in newborn
9. Understand the common problems, basic management, and long-term complication of low birth weight
and premature infants
10. Understand Kanggoro mother care at health facilities and community
11. Understand how to help low birth weight and premature infants to breastfeed
12. Understand the feeling of mother with unwanted pregnancy
13. Describe the types of child abuse and its management
14. Explain the management of a neglected child.

Topic : Fetal-Neonatal Transition and Assessment of a Newborn

1. Understand the physiological changes which take place following birth
2. Understand the aspects of neonatal physiology: limited reserve capacity for temperature
control, cardiovascular and respiratory function
