INTRODUCTION

CHEG 520 Advanced chemical Reaction Engineering

Course Outline

This course tackles differential and integral balances for

homogeneous reactive systems. Planning and design of industerial
chemical and biochemical reactors, with particular reference to ideal
reactors (batch/CSTR/PFR). Uniqueness and multiplicity of steady
states, non-ideal reactors and heterogeneous reactions and reactors.

Final (covering all the course materials)
Assignments/Exercises will be given
approximately bi-weekly
Design Project
A design project will be selected or assigned. The purposes of the
project are: (1) Develop critical thinking and analysis skills that go
beyond the class and text book. (2) Hone technical writing skills. (3)
Learn to coordinate as a group to accomplish a task. (4) Explore the
literature related to kinetics and reactor engineering. (5) Be able to
prepare and give effective oral presentations.
The design project will have the following components:
1. Identify a design project of your choice
2. A written report, no longer than six pages, inclusive of graphs, tables, references, 12
point font, single spaced, 1 inch margins. The written report must have the following:
a) Introduction. Review history of the topic, put the topic in context. What is the
impact of this topic on the society at-large?
b) Current status. Identify the state-of-the-art and the current challenges for this
system/technology.
c) Design/Quantitative. Present some design calculations and/or quantitative
analysis of your topic. Examples might include fitting rate data to some model,
performing calculations for a reactor design or sizing a reactor.
d) Conclusions. Tell what you have learned from the research project.
3. Prepare and give a concise technical presentation on your topic. The length must be
no longer than 20 minutes.
Paper Project
A paper project will be assigned. The purposes of the project
are: (1) Develop critical thinking and analysis skills that go
beyond the class and text book. (2) Hone technical writing
skills. (3) Learn to coordinate as a group to accomplish a
task through discussions. (4) Explore the literature related to
Phase and Chemical Equilibria. (5) Be able to prepare and
give effective oral presentations.

The paper project will have the following components:

1. Identify a topic and at least five journal articles on this topic.
2. Choose one of the journal articles as a your paper project and submit an
abstract.
3. Prepare and give a concise technical presentation on your topic. The
length must be no longer than 20 minutes.
Chemical Reaction Engineering
Chemical reaction engineering is at the heart of
virtually every chemical process. It separates the
chemical engineer from other engineers.

Chemical Reaction Engineering (CRE) is the field

that studies the rates and mechanisms of chemical
reactions and the design of the reactors in which
they take place.
