instruction, select applicable questions from standard)

Why is it important to help our community?

What qualities make people good citizens?

Evidence Outcomes: (Learning Targets)

Every student will be able to: (Create your own lesson objectives from the
standard, follow the ABCD format, using student voice)

1) I can: listen to the book and think of a fact that I learned about firefighters
that makes them unique, this means I am able to use my listening skills to
learn and remember something I heard from the book.

2) I can: express my ideas about what I learned about firefighters and write it in
sentence form on my paper, this means I am able to clearly state my ideas.

3) I can: explain why firefighters are important and helpful to our community,
this means I am able to see how individuals have unique talents and good
qualities to help them work with others in the community

List of Assessments: (Write the number of the learning target associated with
each assessment)

them. This is important because students need to work on their skills of listening,
remembering what they heard, and turning it into a sentence.

Learning target #2: Writing checklist:

I wrote my name and printed letters

I used a resource

I stretched out words

I used finger spaces

I began my sentences with a capital letter

I used punctuations

Learning target #3: By creating a thank you letter students will note how
firefighters are important and helpful within the community. Students will tell me
what they would like to write. I will check for students understanding of how they
are helpful and important by observing their answers.

Post Lesson Reflection

1. To what extent were lesson objectives achieved? (Utilize

assessment data to justify your level of achievement)

Lesson objective #1 was achieved. By looking at the chart and

listening to students Ideas I was able to see that students understood what
makes a firefighter a community helper. A few students came up with ideas
that they were lifesavers and that they helped them feel safe. I think that
this showed that students felt as though firefighters have good qualities that
show they are a good citizen in our community.

Lesson objective #2 was achieved. After assessing the students

facts about firefighters I was able to see that students had good thoughtful
sentences. The sentences started with an uppercase letter and ended with a
period. If students did not have either of those I sent them back to their
tables so that they could fix it and try again.

Lesson objective #3 was achieved. Students were able to show

me that they could create ideas to write to the firefighters to thank them for
the work they do in our community. Even though this part of the lesson was
harder for some of the students I could tell that is really pushed their
thinking and they had good ideas on how firefighters show respect and good
citizenship to our community.

2. What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would

you make if you were to teach again?

If I were to teach this lesson again I would make sure to scaffold

better when writing the letter with my students. When students had a harder
time thinking of an idea of what to write I would go back to the book that we
read and re-read some parts to help them think of more ideas. I would also
show them an example letter so that they could see the format of how we
were going to write the letter.

3. What do you envision for the next lesson? (Continued practice,

reteach content, etc.)

My next lesson is with our guest speaker. Since students know

how to write a thank you letter now we will have them write one each
guest speaker that we have come talk to our class. I hope that after
our next guest speaker students will be able to create their own thank
you letter to give to the next guest speaker. I will also ask students to

think about how each guest speaker shows how they are a good citizen
within our community.
