Where is the Shofar in the Bible?
Commentators have tracked the word
“Shofar” in 7 parts of the Hebrew
Scripture: Exodus, Leviticus,
Numbers, Joshua Chronicles and 5-
psalms
In the first five books of Moses,
Shofar is cited:
Exodus 19:12-14
There are references to the Shofar in
the Hebrew Scriptures and the New
Testament, that Gabriel will
announce the Messiah with the sound
the Shofar.
Temple Sacrifices
The burnt, grain, peace, sin, and guilt
offering composed the basic
sacrificial system of Israel. The
sacrificial system taught the necessity
of dealing with sin and, at the same
time, demonstrated that God had
provided a way for dealing with sin.

offering (minchah; “meat offering” in
KJV). (Leviticus 2:13),

The Sounds
Thereafter, two Priests stood atop of
a marble stand near the altar signaling
trumpet blasts: tekiah, tekiah and
teruah. A long note followed a series
of short notes; then another long note.
In the Mishnah (gathering the laws
of the Bible, written in 200 CE by
great-grandchildren of those who
worshipped at The Temple in
Jerusalem) there is a difference of
opinion when reciting the manner of
Shofar sounding in the Temple in
Jerusalem. The Sages indicate that on
Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year)
Two Shofars and one trumpet are
sounded at the sacrifices. There is
also a dispute as to what the Shofar
sounds should be. The Sages agreed
village shortly after the incident
occurred, placing movement
restrictions on residents while
investigations were underway, locals
said.
After only a single incident, and
entire village is forced to suffer from
inhumane collective punishment.
People cannot freely move in and out
of their community because of the
harsh, repressive measures taken in
the name of “security.”
We can be sure that activists will be
all over this case of human rights
abuses done by the Palestinian
Authority security forces. After all,
we know how inhuman such
punishments are, especially when
on the “Teki’ah” blast) but differed in
“Teruah” note. The Rabbis
compromised by adding all both
sounds in the service.

Learning from Christie and Brewer How to
Confront the Problem

The most important lessons for the
Republican party aren’t coming from
any of the retired politicians doing
their speaking tours right now. They
come from two sitting governors,
Governor Christie of New Jersey and
Governor Brewer of Arizona. And
what they’re doing is very simply.
They’re confronting the problem.
When Christie won an election, like
so many other state governors he was
thrust into the middle of an
impossible budget nightmare, which
was full of impossible problems.
State budgets had been bulked up by
entitlements and their attached public
sector unions. Cutting them meant a
battle with the unions. But not cutting
them meant serious tax hikes. Most
governors chose to walk some kind of
middle path, negotiating with the
unions with the least political fallout,
and raising taxes, to create a
compromise that everyone hated.
But Christie made the rational
calculation that he had nothing to lose
by taking on the unions, because they
would reliably come out against him
during reelection anyway. And if he
didn’t take them on, he would have to
shoulder the blame for a budget crisis
that he had nothing to do with. So
while neighboring New York’s state
government was trying to tiptoe
around a complete shutdown over
budget talks, New Jersey’s new
governor took the initiative and
picked a fight with the unions,
turning them into the villains in the
budget crisis.
Unlike Schwarzenegger who had
tried the same thing in California a
few years too early before buckling
under the response in response to his
failed referendums, Christie benefited
from better timing and from voters
being able to directly connect the
teacher’s union to property tax hikes
over school budgets. It was a scenario
that gave people who were already
cutting back a chance to directly
stand up to tax hikes in local
elections. And while teacher’s unions
are almost as good at wrapping
themselves in a self-righteous cloak,
as the California nurses union was,
their own stunts ended up backfiring
on them.
Christie’s campaign served to put a
major political foe on the defensive
and shifted the perception of blame
for the state’s economic troubles,
boosting his own popularity,
protecting his reelection campaign
and giving him a measure of control
and power over an out of control
situation.
What Christie did though is
resonating beyond New Jersey, as
Republicans and even Democrats,
quickly rushed to jump on the anti-
public sector union bandwagon, even
when they had been taking money
from those same unions not so long
ago. That’s because a winning
strategy in one state has implications
for other states. At a time when
incumbents are terrified of public
outrage, and scrambling for a way to
avoid being blamed for the economic
disaster all around them, a good tactic
is a good tactic.
Similarly in Arizona, Governor
Brewer zeroed in on the problem and
tackled it. Like so many other states,
Arizona was being bled by the cost of
illegal immigration. Brewer directly
tackled the illegal alien issue, and by
doing so earned the ire of liberals and
the Obama White House, but boosted
her own popularity inside the state.
Which is what really matters.
Like Christie, Brewer’s presence was
a bit of a fluke. Christie was an
unlikely winner. And Brewer hadn’t
even won an election. But what
looked like a disadvantage, was
actually an advantage. Because it
meant both of them had less to lose,
than governors with more stable
bases. And it made them hungrier to
go on the offensive and stabilize their
political prospects. Christie has
already said that he’s happy to rule as
a one term governor, but his actions
so far are giving him the best shot at
reelection, which would not be the
case if he had just overseen the usual
compromises between unions and tax
hikes that most other governors are
doing. Similarly Brewer’s polling has
improved, even as so much of the left
coast has lost its mind over her
actions.
Brewer confronted a problem that
happened to be part of the liberal
base. She touched the “untouchable”,
a potential electorate that Democrats
had been hoping to harness for the
future. Through that course of action,
she protected her own political
fortunes and those of her party as
well. And she enlisted populist forces
in an issue that frustrated many
Arizonans and Americans in general,
but that most mainstream politicians
had declared to be off limits. And
while Arizona is being blasted by the
political establishment, it has the
support of locals and the country as a
whole for doing a job that no one else
seems to want to do.
The backlash against Brewer is all
the more intense, because Arizona
managed to skip ahead and tangle
Obama’s own policy agenda, forcing
the White House into a confused tail
spin, as it tries to push legalization
and border security at the same time.
Liberals are rushing to try and bring
together the planned coalition of
corporations and minority groups to
try and sell America on their
legalization program. But they’ve
already been left behind and playing
catch up on an issue that they’ve
already lost among the people.
But for all the lost convention
business, Arizona gains more from
having to spend less money on jails
and social services, than it does from
a few bureaucrats showing up to use
their hotel rooms. That’s because it
costs tens of thousands to keep a
prisoner in jail for a year, and the
occasional convention isn’t going to
bring in that kind of money. And that
lesson too is not lost outside Arizona.
Other border states are joining in on
the illegal immigration issue, and
swing states like Ohio are polling in
support of Arizona, and for a
crackdown on illegal immigration in
their own state. Tennessee has its
own version of the law now. Bad
news for Democrats in a state roughly
split between Democratic and
Republican congressmen.
Going forward, this means a chance
for Republicans to increasingly take
back the legislative momentum at the
state level. And to do so by
personalizing their campaigns,
placing the blame on the Democratic
base, and pushing them to the wall.
It’s the same thing that the Democrats
did to Republicans in 08. It’s what
they’re still trying to do now, by
blaming everything from BP to Wall
Street on the GOP.
Waiting for Congressional
Republicans to do it is hopeless. Too
much of the leadership is satisfied
with waiting around for the
Democrats to fall on their own, so
they can benefit from it. The Tea
Party movement is unfortunately
becoming a victim of its own success,
and being co-opted by professional
politicians. While that’s not a done
deal yet, the Tea Party movement
needs another flashpoint like
Obamacare to become properly
energized again. Without a specific
issue as a litmus test, it becomes hard
to hold politicians accountable, and
harder to avoid being co-opted by
them. In key states, illegal
immigration can be that issue. And
that too would help counter the public
protests carried out by illegal
immigration advocates.
The bottom line is that you can’t win
without confronting the problem. All
you can do is inherit someone else’s
failure. A real victory requires a
mandate for change, and that means
tackling issues, rather than trying to
be the more moderate version of the
problem. For too long Republicans
have been satisfied to be the more
moderate version of the Democrats.
And not only have they not picked up
a moderate image, but they’ve lost
the cultural war by being depicted as
unreasonable extremists who want to
oppress and destroy. That can only
change by pushing forward, instead
of pulling back.
You win by confronting the problem,
and by defining your opponents as the
problem. Democrats did that
successfully in 2008. Now
Republicans have their chance to
return the favor.

Despite the warm words and
attempts at progress when President
Barack Obama hosted Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu at the “make up
summit” Tuesday, Obama still does
not get it. Stale ideas and boilerplate
rhetoric are not enough. President
Obama must learn from history to
make history. To rebuild Israel’s
confidence in him, and in peace
processes, Obama should
acknowledge the unhappy history of
the last ten years – and explain what
will change if Israel takes risks for
peace, yet again.
The tone deafness of those who
claim to seek peace is astounding.
Their inability to see what Israelis see
and to feel Israel’s pain blocks
progress. Most Israelis are stuck.
They feel burned by a decade and a
half of peace-making and negotiation
which yielded ten years of violence,
harsh criticism, and attacks on
Israel’s very legitimacy.
Israelis – and their supporters —
connect the dots, seeing how Ehud
Barak’s hasty, chaotic withdrawal
from Southern Lebanon in May, 2000
and Barak’s generous offer during the
Camp David negotiations that
summer telegraphed weakness,
resulting in Palestinian terrorism that
murdered over one thousand innocent
Israelis –many of whom lived within
Israel’s Green Line, the post-1949
border. They remember that the 2005
Gaza Disengagement was supposed
to bring peace but instead intensified
the rain of rockets on towns and
kibbutzim also within Israel’s Green
Line. They resent that when Israelis
finally defended themselves in
Lebanon against Hezbollah attacks in
2006 and in Gaza against Hamas
attacks in late 2008 and early 2009,
they were pilloried. Just last week,
the New York Times columnist
Thomas Friedman, who supports
Israel, made the harsh, ahistorical,

Yes, that’s fair. Most of us

problem is that nothing has changed.
In fact, as Troy goes on to show,
nothing has changed since the 1930’s.
At least when it comes to Arab
acceptance of Israel. And I don’t
expect anything to change in the
foreseeable future either.

The window

The window isn’t even open yet
There’s a lot in this column with
which I don’t agree – largely because
I don’t think peace is possible now or
in the foreseeable future, barring a
total military defeat of the Arabs by
Israel. But this little bit near the end
is spot-on.
We hear time and again that the
enemy of peace in the Middle East is
time, and that time is running out.
Perhaps that is what has caused Mr.
Obama and his team to misstep so
badly; they think it’s a race against
the clock. Do something now or fail.
But the real enemy of a negotiated
settlement in the Mideast is not time;
it’s failure. Neither Israel nor the
Palestinians nor the United States can
afford to fail again. After yet another
failure, it could well result in
perpetual violence.
We keep being told that ‘there’s no
time like now,’ that there’s a
‘window of opportunity’ and that the
‘window is closing.’ In fact, for as
long as I can remember, that’s what
one US administration after another –
going back at least to Bush 41 – has
been saying about the prospects for
peace in the Middle East. It just isn’t
so. The window isn’t open and it
never has been.

Could Natanz just go ‘poof’? The
even obnoxious Roger Cohen, whose
columns usually do nothing but raise
my blood pressure, dropped this little
tidbit into his latest screed on
Thursday (Hat Tip: Gershon D).
The Bush administration opposed the
2007 Israeli strike. It was worried the
Syrians would respond and ignite a
wider Middle East war. It believed
tough U.S. diplomacy, backed by the
threat of force, would ensure the
Syrian reactor never became
operational. President Bush’s line
was: Let me handle it.
Ehud Olmert, then the Israeli prime
minister, was disappointed at
American inaction. His line was: It’s
now in our hands. No U.S. green light
was asked for, and none given, as
Israel bombed.
That’s interesting. Everything I’ve
read until now has the Israelis
providing the US with evidence of
what was going on in al-Kibar (the
Syrian reactor) including a video that
showed North Korean nuclear
advisers. And the US supposedly
water from a cooler outside a
mosque. Upon seeing him do that, the
people of the area started beating him
up,” said Meerumal, a resident of the
area. “Later, around 150 tribesmen
attacked us, injuring seven of our
people, who were taken to the Jinnah
Hospital,” he added.
One of the injured, Heera, said that
another 400 families of the area were
also being threatened to leave their
households and settle elsewhere.
“Our people are even scared of going
out of their houses. We are also
putting up with living in the filthy
pen because we cannot go home for
fear of being killed,” Heera said.
Police officials are aware about the
incident, but they have failed to take
any steps to stop the atrocities being
meted out to the minority community
“A trivial incident led to riots
between the people of the area. Since
both the communities happened to be
illiterate, the matter just flared up,”
said Memon Goth Station House
Officer.
Illiteracy: sure that explains
everything. If there had just been
proper signage on the water cooler —
say, “No Dhimmis” — and people
who could read it, all would be well.
Meanwhile, Minority Affairs
Minister Dr Mohan Lal has assured
Hindus of full government protection.
“I have directed the DPO and the
approved.
But what if they didn’t? Israel did the
deed anyway and the US went along
after the fact. Could it happen again?
The fallout was contained through
sleight of hand. Israel feigned
ignorance. A tight collar was placed
for several months around U.S.
intelligence. President Bashar al-
Assad was not made to feel cornered.
It was as if the reactor had gone poof
in the night.
Could Iran’s Natanz plant go poof in
the night? Some people are thinking
about it, an attack from “nowhere.” I
think those are dangerous thoughts.
Iran is not Syria.
The Obama-Netanyahu statement
said: “The president told the prime
minister he recognizes that Israel
must always have the ability to
defend itself, by itself, against any
threat or possible combination of
threats, and that only Israel can
SHO to ensure that these people go
back to their houses safely,” Lal said.
