Types of pumps
Centrifugal & Positive Displacement
2. Parts of pumps
Impeller, Volute, Discharge Nozzle, Suction Nozzle, Seal, Shaft,
Oil Rings, Casings, Bearings
3. Definition of NPSH
Total absolute suction pressure determined at the suction nozzle
& reffered to the datum elevation, minus the vapour of the liquid,
in units of meters (feet) of head of the pump
4. Definition of cavitations
A pump is designed to handle liquid not vapour. Vapour forms if
the pressure in the pump falls below the liquids vapour pressure.
The vapour pressure occurs right at the impeller inlet where a
sharp pressure drop occurs. The impeller rapidly builds up the
pressure which collapses vapour bubbles causing cavitations and
damage. This is avoided by maintaining sufficient NPSH
5. 4 attributes of performance curve
Capacity, Head (pressure), Power, Temperature of bearing, Speed
6. True or false. NPSHR is greater than NPSH
True
7. Definition as per API witnessed & Observed
Witnessed: Inspection or test where the purchaser is notified for
the timing of the inspection or test and a hold point is placed on
the inspection or test until the purchaser or his representative is
in attendance
Observed: Inspection or test where the purchaser is notified of
the timing of the inspection or test and the inspection or test is
performed as scheduled if the purchaser or his representative is
not present
8. What is static and dynamic balancing
