1.

Types of pumps
Centrifugal & Positive Displacement
2. Parts of pumps
Impeller, Volute, Discharge Nozzle, Suction Nozzle, Seal, Shaft,
Oil Rings, Casings, Bearings
3. Definition of NPSH
Total absolute suction pressure determined at the suction nozzle
& reffered to the datum elevation, minus the vapour of the liquid,
in units of meters (feet) of head of the pump
4. Definition of cavitations
A pump is designed to handle liquid not vapour. Vapour forms if
the pressure in the pump falls below the liquids vapour pressure.
The vapour pressure occurs right at the impeller inlet where a
sharp pressure drop occurs. The impeller rapidly builds up the
pressure which collapses vapour bubbles causing cavitations and
damage. This is avoided by maintaining sufficient NPSH
5. 4 attributes of performance curve
Capacity, Head (pressure), Power, Temperature of bearing, Speed
6. True or false. NPSHR is greater than NPSH
True
7. Definition as per API witnessed & Observed
Witnessed: Inspection or test where the purchaser is notified for
the timing of the inspection or test and a hold point is placed on
the inspection or test until the purchaser or his representative is
in attendance
Observed: Inspection or test where the purchaser is notified of
the timing of the inspection or test and the inspection or test is
performed as scheduled if the purchaser or his representative is
not present
8. What is static and dynamic balancing

9. Chloride test why?

To prevent the corrosion
10. Max peak to peak vibration

11. Hyrdotest time

30 Minutes minimum
12. Hydrotest pressure for casing
1.5 times the maximum allowable working pressure
13. Mandatory tests for centrifugal pumps
Performance Test, Hydrostatic Test
14. Splash, submerged what a pump system
Vertically Suspended below water (liquid)
15. Two uses of diaphragm
Their ability to run dry for prolonged periods without incurring
damage
16. What is taken on X axis and Y axis during performance
Y Axis: Head, Power Efficiency & NPSH
X Axis: Capacity
17. Centrifugal pump API standard
API610
18. Test of performance what is achieved
Capacity, Head, Power Efficiency & NPSH
19. During 4 hrs of running test after 3 hrs bearing seals
replace and vendor continues for the balance 1 hr true or false
False (it should be retested for 4 hrs)
20. After pump mounted on the base plate what are the
dimensional inspection carried out before loading
Skid dimensions, Alignment of shafts
21. Types of drivers
Electric Motors, Steam Turbines, Gears, Gas Turbines
22. Single suction, double suction, multistage, propeller &
turbine which is not centrifugal pump
Turbine
23. Why is cavitations undesirable
Pumps efficiency will be reduced
Premature bearing failure
Shaft breakage & other fatigue failure
Premature mechanical seal failure
