Multiple Stages Liquid-liquid Extraction partially miscible

solvent

Example 1
5300 kg/h of a solution containing 30% by weight of ethylene glycol (EG) in water is to be
reduced to 4.5% (solvent free) by a continuous extraction in a countercurrent column using
recycled furfural that contains 1.5% EG as the extracting solvent:

Determine the minimum solvent flow rate for the extraction above
If the solvent enters at 1.25 times the minimum solvent rate, how many ideal stages
are required?
Determine the number of real stages if the overall efficiency of the column is 60%

Exercise 1
In the processing of acetic acid extraction, it is proposed that an aqueous feed of 1000 kg/h
containing 20 % acetic acid is to be extracted in a countercurrent multistage system.
Isopropyl ether at rate 180 kg/h is used as the solvent in reducing the acid concentration to 5
wt% acetic acid in the final raffinate. If the solvent contain 2 % acetic acid is used,
determine the number of stages required.
Compare the number of stages if pure solvent is used in this process.

Exercise 2
A 50% solution of solute C in solvent A is extracted with a second solvent B in a
countercurrent multiple extraction unit. The mass of B is 25% of that of the feed solution.
Determine the number of ideal stages required and the mass and concentration of the first
extract if the final raffinate contains 15% of solute C
Exercise 3

5250 kg/h of a binary mixture of acetone - water solution that contains 25% acetone
by mass is counter currently extracted by using TCE partially soluble recycled
solvent containing 1% acetone by mass to reduce the concentration to 5% acetone
in the solvent free raffinate product. Using the ternary diagram of acetic acetone -
water - TCE , determine:
i) the minimum flow rate of the pure solvent
ii) the number of theoretical stages if the solvent used is 5 times that of minimum
solvent flow rate
iii) If the overall efficiency is given as 62%, what would the real stages be?

Exercise 4

5300 kg/h of a solution containing 30% by weight of ethylene glycol (EG) in water is
to be reduced to 4.5% (solvent free) by a continuous extraction in a counter-current
column using recycled furfural that contains 1.5% EG as the extracting solvent.
Using the equilateral ternary diagram,
a) Determine the minimum solvent flow rate for the extraction above
b) If the solvent enters at 1.25 times the minimum solvent rate, how many ideal
stages are required?
c) Determine the number of real stages if the overall efficiency of the column is
60%.
