Inthelate1950s,hewasamemberofBuddyFeatherstonhaugh'squintettogetherwithBobbyWellins.
Throughoutthesixties,heworkedwithJohnDankworth,andalsoformedpartof(EricBurdonand)the
Animals'BigBandthatmadeitsonlypublicappearanceatthe5thAnnualBritishJazz&BluesFestivalin
Richmond(1965)withtenorsStanRobinson,DickMorrisseyandAlGay,baritonesaxPaulCarroll,andfellow
trumpetsIanCarrandGregBrown.In1968,WheelerappearedonguitaristTerrySmith'sfirstsoloalbum,Fall
Out.

Wheelerperformedandrecordedhisowncompositionswith
largejazzensemblesthroughouthiscareer,beginningwiththe
firstalbumunderhisownname,WindmillTilter(1969),
recordedwiththeJohnDankworthband.ACDwasreleasedby
BGORecordsinSeptember2010.ThebigbandalbumSongfor
Someone(1973)fusedWheeler'scharacteristicorchestral
writingwithpassagesoffreeimprovisationprovidedby
musicianssuchasEvanParkerandDerekBailey,andwasalso
namedAlbumoftheYearbyMelodyMakermagazinein1975.

Inthemid1960s,Wheelerbecameacloseparticipantinthe Jazz+RockEnsemble,1992
nascentfreeimprovisationmovementinLondon,playingwith
JohnStevensParker,theSpontaneousMusicEnsembleandthe
GlobeUnityOrchestra.Despitetheabovenotedaccomplishments,muchofhisreputationrestsonhiswork
withsmallerjazzgroups.Wheeler'sfirstsmallgrouprecordingstogainsignificantcriticalattentionwereGnu
High(1975)andDeerWan(1977),bothfortheECMlabel(GnuHighisoneofthefewalbumstofeatureKeith
JarrettasasidemansincehistenurewithCharlesLloyd).Oneexceptionfromtheongoingcollaborationwith
ECMwashisrarealbumonCBCcalledEnsembleFusionairein1976.ThishadthreeotherCanadian
musiciansandwasrecordedinSt.Mary'sChurchinTorontoforadifferentcharactertothesoundthanonthe
ECMrecordings.

WheelerwasthetrumpetplayerintheAnthonyBraxtonQuartetfrom1971to1976,andfrom1977hewasalso
amemberofthechamberjazzgroupAzimuth(withJohnTaylorandNormaWinstone).

Laterlife
In1997WheelerreceivedwidespreadcriticalpraiseforhisalbumAngelSong,whichfeaturedanunusual
"drummerless"quartetofBillFrisell(guitar),DaveHolland(bass)andLeeKonitz(altosax).

WheelerdiedafterashortperiodoffrailhealthatanursinghomeinLondonon18September2014.Hewas84
yearsold.[6]
