1. A car is traveling at 45 km/h on a level poor pavement and dry condition. The car has frontal area of 2.0
m2, and weighs 12 KN. The wheelbase is 3 m. The center of gravity is 660 mm above the roadway
surface and 1.6 m behind the front axle. The cars engine is producing 120 N-m of torque and is in a
gear of reduction ratio of 5 to 1, the wheel radius is 500 mm and the mechanical efficiency of the
driveline is 75%. Find the safe acceleration that driver should attain if the car is (a) rear-wheel drive?
(40 points)

2. A front-wheel drive car weighs 13 kN. It has a 2.9-m wheelbase and the center of gravity located 550 mm
above the roadway surface and 680 mm behind the front axle. With Cd= 0.28, driveline slippage of 3%,
mechanical efficiency is 80% and the wheel radius is 500-mm. The gear reduction ratio is 6 to 1. The
cars torque/engine speed curve is given by
M e 9n e 0.009n e2
If the car is on a paved roadway at a 3000 altitude and on a good and dry condition, determine its
maximum acceleration. (40 points)

3. A car is traveling at 110 km/h. It has a wheelbase of 3.2 m with the center of gravity located 1 m from the
rear axle and 650 mm from the point of contact of the pavement and the tyres. The car is traveling on a
road that is of poor and dry condition. What is the maximum breaking force and percent allocated to the
rear breaks? (20 points)
