Mix Design of Self Compacting Concrete

Concrete research evolution generated the Self compacting concrete(SCC) which
does not require any compaction and can flow easily under its own weight to
pass through the congested steel and also can take any architectural shape. We
are going to discuss the mix design of SCC which is affected by the use of key
ingrediaents.Innovation in the fields of admixtures and cementitious products
has led to the production of new horizons in concrete productivity SCC ,for
example. Workability parameters which include flow-ability, passing ability,
stability or segregation resistance play a vital role in SCC production. Term
segregation resistance can better be elaborated as the presence of aggregate
particles uniformly at all locations and levels.Hardend SCC will definitely have
more durability , homogeneity than normal concrete.
Self compacting instinct of concrete is influenced by the mix design which is
ultimately its key constituents and their mix proportion.Okamura and Ozawa
pointed out and empirical formula for the mix design of SCC. One can get better
traits of SCC by reduction of coarse aggregates, increase in powder contents
along with a good super plasticizer in the presence of low value of water-powder
ratio. Okamura and Ozawa proposed a system to cap coarse and fine aggregates
value at a predefined constant and achieving the flow and self consolidation by
adjusting the superplastizer and water-powder ratio. The coarse aggregate
content is generally fixed at 50 percent of the total solid volume,40 percent is
the cut off value of fine aggregates of the mortar volume and the water powder
ratio is assumed to be 0.9-1.0 depending upon the dosage of superplasricizer
and powder properties. Water powder ratio is finalized by conducting various
trials.
Mix design of SCC differs from the conventional concrete due to more powder
content and less aggregates. Moreover, SCC has high range water reducers in
excess amounts and frequently a viscosity modifying agent in small doses.
Selection of materials is governed by following points
Amount of marginally unsuitable aggregate, ideal shapes and size should
be limited.
Selection of powder type like fly ash, Micro silica, Crusher dust.
Choice of High range of Water reducers.
Choice of Viscosity modifier agent.
Interaction between cement, powder mineral, High range water reducer
and viscosity modifier agent.
Aggregate impart dimensional stability to the concrete betterly if are fine shaped
and graded along with low cement content. Coarse aggregate contents was fixed
at 50 % of solid volume and sand caped at 40 % of the mortar volume.
Researchers concluded that coarse aggregate contents should be restricted to 46
% and fine to 40% originally and W/C ratio between 0.9-1.1 which definitely gives
Self-Compacted Concrete.
Hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose was used as an admixture which was not only
economical but also very stable for SCC.
Aggregate crusher dust produced was considered a better replacement of sand
with a size of 3 to 4 mm.5 % content of the micro silica gave good packing
between the powder or dust particles. Combined effect of fly ash and micro silica
made concrete more cohesive thus inhibited the segregation and bleeding with
high dose of super plasticizer.
Self Compacting Concrete behaviour is of utmost importance in fresh state i.e.
flowability, viscosity,passingability and segregation resistance.

Mix design is affected by the shapes of aggregates used in the mix along with
their individual proportions. Use of powder admixture reduces the dosage of
viscosity modifier agent. Mixes with different fillers like silica fume helps in
attaining a high early strength making it more suitable for use in Pre-cast
applications.
