SCPS did indeed open its doors that fall, with the initial plan of providing
education to grades K5-5th and building on additional grade levels at a later time.
That same school year, however, a local Christian school closed, and many of its
students joined the SCPS community. Because of this increase, SCPS was able to
add 6th and 7th grade classes, enrolling a total of 52 students in its premier year.
From 1987 to the spring of 1995, SCPS was housed at Bradley Chapel, now
Southside Community Church. God blessed us immensely during those years as we
experienced a growth in our student body that necessitated a move to a larger
facility.
In the fall of 1995, SCPS began a partnership with Northside Baptist Church, as
they graciously opened their doors to the school. Northside had always hoped that
their facility could be used to its full capacity for ministry, and God fulfilled both
their dream and SCPS' need. The school remained at this location for 13 years, as
the building transitioned from housing Northside to Covenant Baptist Church. It
was here that SCPS launched its high school program, trusting God to provide
financially, which He did time and time again, often through donations that exactly
matched the need.
Since the fall semester of 2009, South Carolina Private School has resided in its
current location, formerly Cornerstone Assembly. The location, now Peace
Fellowships church home, has been incredibly beneficial to SCPS, providing
ample classroom space, a home gymnasium, and ownership as South Carolina
Private holds a 60% equity position on the property. This co-ownership has allowed
for a close relationship between SCPS and Peace Fellowship, enabling each to
glorify God and share the Gospel in Anderson.
Ephesians 3:20-21 says, "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than
all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be
glory in the church and in Christ Jesus, throughout all generations, for ever and
ever. Amen!" (NIV). Over the past 25 years, the Lord has far exceeded our greatest
dreams and expectations, and we look forward to the future He has in store for
SCPS, giving Him all the glory.
Mission
SCPS exists to provide an excellent education based on non-denominational Biblical
truths in a family atmosphere, to prepare the student for a successful future by seeking
Gods direction in their lives. SCPS also strives to provide each student with a rich
academic background, an appropriate sense of self, an opportunity for growth, a
commitment to family, community, nation and world, and a respect for the spiritual
dignity of all persons.
Beliefs
The Holy Bible to be the inspired, only infallible, authoritative Word of God (II
Timothy 3:15, II Peter 1:2).
There is one sovereign God, eternally existing in three persons - Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:1, Matthew 28:19, John 10:30). In the deity of Christ (John
10:33): His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23, Luke 1:35); His sinless life (Hebrews
4:15, Hebrews 7:26); His miracles (John 2:11); His vicarious and atoning death (I
Corinthians 15:3, Ephesians 1:7, Hebrews 2:9); His resurrection (John 11:25, I
Corinthians 15:4); His ascension to the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19); and His
personal return in power and glory (Acts 1:11, Revelation 19:11).
God directly created Adam and Eve in His own image, distinct from all other
living creatures, in a state of original righteousness. They sinned by rebelling against
Gods revealed will thereby incurring both physical and spiritual death. As a result all
human beings are born with a sinful nature that leads them to sin in thought, word, and
deed.
In the existence of Satan, sin, and evil powers. All these have been defeated by
God in the cross of Christ.
The Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, as a
representative and substitutionary sacrifice, triumphing over all evil; and all who believe
in Him are justified by His shed blood and forgiven of all their sins.
The Holy Spirit indwells and gives life to believers, enables them to understand
the Scriptures, empowers them for godly living, and equips them for service and witness.
The Bible and religious training are a part of every aspect of the Christian school
program.
Prayer is vitally important to undergird the oneness we have in Christ as a South
Carolina Private School family.
Parents are the primary educators of their students spiritually, physically, socially,
and emotionally.
The Christian school should cooperate with the parent to provide a Christian
education for the child.
Compromises will not be made when philosophy is based on Scripture.
Vision
Based on our Mission and Beliefs, SCPS will be the school of choice for students and
families seeking an institution that:
1. Maintains a strong Christian identity
2. Enjoys a reputation for academic excellence, curricular innovation, and state-
of-the-art technologies in and out of the classroom
3. Offers an experientially-based and diverse extra-curricular program
4. Seeks and retains faculty who enhance the Mission of the school
5. Provides safe, modern, and well-maintained facilities
6. Develops the resources necessary to fund a growing endowment program
7. Keeps the SCPS education as an accessible option to the deserving population
of diverse backgrounds and academic statures
8. Ensures the vitality of the school through aggressive marketing, recruitment
and retention
9. Invites, encourages, and facilitates active participation by alumni and past
parents in the school community
By enacting this dress code policy, South Carolina Private School recognizes that
there are occasions when individuals may need to wear specific clothing due to medical
reasons. When such is the case, the employee must provide the proper medical
documentation that gives rise to the need for deviation from this dress code policy. Any
employee deemed inappropriately dressed according to this dress code policy will be sent
home until he/she returns with appropriate attire.
Daily Procedures
Classroom Care
The lights in the classroom are to be turned off when the classroom is not
in use. The teacher of the last class for the day should turn off the lights, close the
windows, and lock the doors.
Care should be taken to leave the classroom neat and orderly after each
period because many classrooms are used by more than one teacher.
School Day Supervision
No student or group of students may be left unattended in a
classroom, the gym, the locker room, or any other area of the Notre Dame
campus. Faculty members are to supervise their classrooms and the corridor areas
near their classroom between periods.

A letter grade is assigned at the end of each grading period. This grade
must reflect the actual grade a student has earned up to this point in the semester.
Teachers must be able to account for assigned grades on the basis of graded work,
(exams, quizzes, homework, etc.) and NOT on what the teacher anticipates or
thinks the students might earn at a later time or even on what the students
should have earned.
A letter grade is given at the end of the semester. It is the only mark that is
entered on the students official academic record. The grade MUST be based on
all work done over the entire semester and a semester final exam.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences can take place any time during the school year
at the request of parents or teachers. These conferences are ONLY held with the
presence of the counselor and Principal. This acts as support for the faculty
member. Conferences are preferred to be held when all responsible teachers can
be present to give parents a clear view of their student in all classes.
Gradebooks
Electronic and print grade books are legal documents, therefore, teachers
are to keep an accurate record of all items, which comprise a students grade. This
information is to be available to the Department Chairs, Administration, and
parents during a conference. Faculty need to adhere to the grade posting dates
found on the school calendar.
A copy of all semester exams and the percentage the exam counts toward
the final grade shall be filed with the administrative assistant at the end of each
semester.
Assessments and Assignments
Nature and Frequency of Assessments
Methods of assessment should reflect the outcomes we want students to
obtain. Since we want students to be able to use knowledge creatively and to
communicate about their learning, our assessments should require them to do so.
Objective tests and quizzes are tools for determining knowledge of course
content, but they are not the only, nor always the best, way to assess students.
Extra Credit may be offered at the discretion of the teacher but should
never replace the original stated objectives. Extra credit should adhere to the
stated scope and sequence of a course, and it must be available to all students in a
given course.
If a teacher finds some text that might be useful for a class, the teacher
should send for an examination copy. If, after study and analysis, the teacher is
convinced that it would benefit the implementation of goals in the course and the
department, adoption of the textbook should be requested at a department
meeting. The department chairperson and other members of the department must
examine the text under consideration. If the text is considered to be the best
possible to implement the objective of the department, the department chairperson
should present a request for its adoption to the Principal.
Users will use appropriate behavior (general school rules apply) and
acceptable use when accessing technology at SCPS.
Devices include, but are not limited to, computers, scanners, still and
video cameras, cell phones, document cameras, Mimios, LCD
projectors, PDAs, iPads, iPods, Kindles, and all other electronic
devices capable of attaching to the SCPS network using any method.
Use of these devices on the SCPS campus shall be considered a
privilege, not a right.
Failure of a User to follow acceptable use standards may result in
termination of technology privileges, appropriate disciplinary action as
stated in school policies, and possible notification of law enforcement.
South Carolina Private School will cooperate fully with local, state, or
federal officials in any investigation related to illegal activities
conducted within or through technology usage at SCPS.
Internet, email and phone use at SCPS shall be used primarily for
educational purposes.
ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES
Illegal activities include, but are not limited to, the following:
o Users will not attempt to gain unauthorized access to the SCPS system(s)
or seek to use the SCPS system(s) beyond their authorized access.
o Users will not deliberately attempt to disrupt the performance of any
computer system or destroy data via a virus or any other means.
o Users will not use the SCPS system(s) to engage in any illegal act.
o Vandalism of any kind will require full restitution for costs associated
with hardware, software, and system restoration. It will also result in
temporary or permanent cancellation of device privileges and additional
disciplinary action.
TECHNOLOGY ETIQUETTE
Technology Etiquette shall be observed and utilized by all Users. Technology
etiquette includes, but is not limited to, the following:
o Be polite! Do not get abusive in your messages to others.
o Exercise caution when using sarcasm and humor. Without face-to-face
communications, a joke or statement may be misunderstood.
o Show consideration and respect for others at all times.
o Be respectful of the rights of other network users and do not violate their
privacy.
o Be aware of the intent and function of an individual or group before
sending a message.
o Deliberately posing as a user other than yourself is prohibited.
o At the conclusion of a users session the user should log off the system
he/she is using.
Users will maintain a respect for privacy while using the SCPS
system(s). Respect for Privacy includes, but is not limited to:
o Not forwarding or posting a message that was sent to them
privately without the consent of the person who sent it.
o Not posting private information about another person.
o Not interfering with other users work or files.
o Inappropriate language shall not be used in any SCPS device
communication. Inappropriate language includes, but is not limited to:
Obscene, profane, lewd, vulgar, offensive, inflammatory,
threatening, or disrespectful language.
Participation in hate mail, harassment, discriminatory
remarks, and other harmful or inappropriate behaviors.
Discipline
General Policies
Discipline is essential to the school since without it, the proper functioning
of the school is impossible. Basically, discipline signifies good order, as dictated
by common sense. The burden of discipline lies not with the Administration in
general, but is the mutual responsibility of all faculty members.
Each faculty member has the right and obligation to correct any student
who disregards school or class regulations. Since all faculty members are
responsible for enforcement of regulations, they should familiarize themselves
with these rules and regulations as printed in the Student-Parent Handbook.
Faculty members are to follow the school policies and procedures related
to discipline. Any deviation from established school policy must be cleared with
the Principals office prior to implementation.
Faculty members should demand of themselves the same degree of
consistency in following regulations that they demand of their students in
following their own classroom procedures; example is the best teacher of all.
Students may never be sent off campus without the permission of one of
the Principal and written permission of the parent or guardian. Failure to observe
this policy can lead to legal complications and may result in the dismissal of the
faculty member.
Classroom Discipline
Classroom behavior expected of all students is listed in the Student-Parent
Handbook. In addition, at the beginning of the school year, each faculty member
is responsible for distributing to each student in his or her class a Course
Expectation Sheet which summarizes the particular courses policies and
procedures. Students are expected to adhere to both the standard classroom
policies and the instructors special rules throughout the academic year.
Discipline Procedures
The individual faculty member is the primary disciplinary authority in the
school. Any student, who in the opinion of a faculty or staff member, violates
class or school rules are liable for disciplinary action. The student may be verbally
corrected at the time of the incident and may be asked to discuss the situation with
the faculty member later in the day. The teacher may also find it helpful to contact
the students parents directly to discuss the situation. Teachers may also fill out
either a Minor Disciplinary Infraction Slip or a Major Infraction Slip
depending on the circumstances.
Minor
A teacher may give a student a Minor Disciplinary Infraction
Slip when the teacher observes the student violating one of the
infractions listed on the slip. The teacher may give the student this slip
directly or may turn it into the Principals Office, which, in turn, will see
that the student receives the slip. Upon receiving the infraction slip, the
student serves a one-hour detention after school on the next school day.
Major
If, in the opinion of the teacher, a student has committed a more
serious rules violation, or has not shown significant improvement after
receiving minor infractions slips, the teacher may refer the student to the
dean for a Major Discipline Infraction. The dean will access the
incident/situation and usually assesses multiple detention hours to be
served on Saturdays. Additionally, a Warning from the Principal letter
may result from the Students failure to follow school rules.
NOTE: A teacher may send a student to the Principal immediately
if the teacher believes this action is necessary to maintain good order in
the classroom. Students sent from class will go directly to the principals
office. Failure to observe this procedure is considered a serious matter
and may result in suspension, probation or expulsion.
BOYS' GUIDELINES
All clothing must be neat, clean (not torn, cut, frayed, patched, or worn out),
and worn in a manner that doesnt appear sloppy. Pajama pants may not be
worn.
Shirts may either be appropriate tee shirts or collar-type dress or polo shirt. Tee
shirts may not have inappropriate logo or statements on them nor should they
have images that do not support biblical principles.
Shorts must be mid-thigh length. NO CHUBBIES!
PE uniform cannot be worn outside of PE class
Undergarments must not be visible at any time.
Slippers may not be worn.
No beach style flip-flops, (rubber thong style)
Hair will be well groomed and may not extend below the eyebrows, earlobes,
or top of the collar. Ponytails, along with extreme hairstyles, are not permitted.
Extreme bleached/color treated hair is not permitted. This includes non-natural
hair colors.
No hats, hoods, or caps may be worn during school hours or in the school
building.
No body piercing, ear piercing, or visible tattoos.
Boys may wear one modest necklace if desired.
No facial hair, must be clean shaven.
GIRLS' GUIDELINES
All clothing must be neat and clean (not torn, cut, frayed, patched, or worn
out), and worn in a manner that doesnt appear sloppy. Pajama pants may not
be worn.
Students may wear jeans, skirts, dresses, capris, split skirts and shorts. The
shorts must be no shorter than three inches above the top of the knee. For K2-
5th grade shorts must be fingertip length.
Open back or low neck blouses or dresses are inappropriate. Halter tops, tube
tops, or other shirts or blouses that leave any part of the midriff or back bare
are not appropriate. Tank tops may only be worn if covered by a blouse with
sleeves or during afterschool practices. No off the shoulder tops.
PE uniform may not be worn outside of PE class.
All clothing must fit (not be too loose, too tight, or too revealing) and avoid
extremes (i.e., no gothic style of clothing). Because of this standing policy,
yoga pants are not permitted. No cleavage or any part of the midriff shall be
visible.
Proper undergarments are to be worn with all clothing and must not be visible
at any time. Camisoles should not resemble lingerie.
No beach style flip-flops, (rubber thong style)
No leggings may be worn in the upper school.
Hair must be well groomed and avoid extremes; this includes non-natural hair
colors.
No hats, caps, bandanas, or hoods from hoodies are to be worn during the
school day.
Girls may have no more than three piercings in each ear.
Additional visible body piercings are not permitted.
No visible tattoos are permitted.
At school sponsored pool parties, field trips etc., one piece bathing suits,
tankinis (that cover the midriff), or two piece bathing suits with a tee shirts
covering on at all times.
Formal attire at school functions must meet the following guidelines: dresses
must be no shorter than three inches above the knee (including splits);
cleavage area must be covered; back of the dress must not go lower than mid-
back (bra-strap length); cannot be strapless.
Girls in pre-school through third grade are permitted to wear spaghetti strap
dress without a covering, but fourth and fifth grade must have a jacket or
shrug on with the dress.
General Information
Announcements
All announcements on the public address system are to be made at the
specified times. The text of the announcement should be printed, typed or emailed
and signed by the faculty member involved and given to the administrative
assistant. Announcements received after 7:15 AM will be read as part of that days
announcements only if necessary.
Tuition Reimbursement
The school will reimburse the faculty member for 50% of the cost of
tuition for course work related to teaching area at SCPS. Prior approval from the
faculty members department chair is required and reporting of completed units
for reimbursement, must be submitted to administration within 90 days of
completion of the course. This course work must be verified by a transcript or
records from an accredited institution of higher education.
Employees who voluntarily terminate their employment with SCPS, or
whose employment is terminated for good cause, will be required to refund all
reimbursement payments they have received within a one year period from the
date of their termination.
Reimbursement shall not exceed $2000.00 in a given year.
Professional Development Program
A serious commitment to professional development is one hallmark of an
effective school. Professional development is the force that stimulates the
intellectual growth of faculty, nurtures creativity in the school community, and
keeps staff members current in their fields. Professional development is also one
way in which faculty model the habits of life-long learning that we seek to instill
in students.
Sick Leave
A full-time employee is entitled to ten (10) days of sick leave. Any request
for absence must be approved in advance by the principal (e.g., planned
surgery/treatment, etc.). Sick leave is paid only for days on which the
employee would otherwise have worked a regular schedule, and not for
absences on Saturday, Sunday, or school holidays. Unused sick leave may
accumulate to a maximum of thirty (30) days a maximum of twenty (20)
unused sick leave days may be carried over from previous years plus the
allotted ten (10) sick leave days for any new school year. To use sick
leave, the employee must be absent because of a bona fide illness or injury
and must present proof of illness or injury upon request
Any false claim for or fraudulent use of sick leave constitutes a breach by
the employee of his/her employment agreement and can result in forfeiture
of pay and/or employment termination.
To be eligible for sick leave you must call the Principals Administrative
Assistant by 7:00 a.m. to report your illness. Thereafter, you must report
your progress to the Principals Administrative Assistants office every day
until you recover. The phone call(s) may be combined with assignments
sent via email to the Principals Administrative Assistant; an email by
itself, however, is insufficient notice of the absence.
Payment of sick leave is not considered as time worked in the computation
of overtime. Employees may not receive sick leave for any days for which
they receive State Disability Insurance or Workers Compensation
payments; however, they may use accrued sick leave to supplement State
Disability Insurance or Workers Compensation payments up to their base
salary to the extent that this is permitted by law or regulation.
Sick leave will not be granted when illness occurs on a scheduled day off,
during vacation, or when absent from work for reasons other than illness.
Part-time employees receive a pro-rata share of this benefit. Temporary
employees are not eligible for this benefit.
The law requires the school to notify its workers compensation carrier of
any concerns regarding false or fraudulent claims.
Any person who makes or causes to be made any knowingly false or
fraudulent material statement or material misrepresentation for the purpose of
obtaining or denying workers compensation benefits or payment may be found
guilty of a felony.
Neither the school nor its workers compensation insurance carrier will be
held liable for payment of workers compensation benefits for any injury that
arises out of an employees voluntary participation in any off-duty recreational,
social or athletic activity that is not part of the employers work-related duties.
Personnel Policies
Nondiscrimination Policy
South Carolina Private School will in no way discriminate against an
applicant for employment on the basis of sex, age, handicap, race, color or
national and/or ethnic origin.
Jury Duty
With the assistance of the Principal, during teaching times, faculty
members are to seek exemptions for jury summons. If exemption is not
possible, rescheduling should be requested for summer or extended vacation
periods. In the event a faculty member is required to serve on a court jury,
compensation will continue.
Evaluations
The purpose of the evaluation system is three-fold:
To promote teaching excellence through the professional
development of faculty members,
To provide a means of accountability for performance in light of
the mission, goals, and policies of SCPS,
To provide faculty with a record of evaluation this serves as legal
insulation in the event of charges of negligence or malfeasance.
Given these three aims, faculty will participate in both formative and
summative evaluations.
Misunderstandings and Grievances
Any time people work together there are bound to be occasional
misunderstandings or grievances. It is the hope that these will be infrequent, but
recognized that they may occur. Administration will make every effort possible to
resolve them quickly in a manner, which is equitable to everyone.
Any employee who has a complaint should first discuss it with his/her
administrator, who will do his/her best to resolve the matter. However, if the
employee feels the matter has not been or can not be properly resolved at that
level, then he/she should arrange a meeting with the Principal.
If the employee is still not satisfied, the Principal will arrange a meeting
with the President who will listen to all sides of the dispute and make a decision
which will be final and binding on all parties.
In addition to complaints about their own circumstances, employees are
expected to notify the appropriate administrator if they become aware of any
violations of school rules or policies.
The school will not tolerate reprisals or retaliation against any
employee who exercises his/her rights under this grievance procedure.
Harassment Policy
The school strongly believes that all people have the right to work in an
environment free from all forms of unlawful harassment. Harassment, including
sexual harassment of one employee by another employee or supervisor is
prohibited by both state and federal law. The purpose of this policy is to assure
that no form of harassment occurs at our school. This harassment policy includes,
but is not limited to, harassment based on a persons race, nationality, gender,
religion, physical or mental disability, age, and sexual orientation.
Section 5: Student Services
Counseling and Guidance
Counseling and academic advisement is a direct service to individual students and
is available to all students of SCPS. Emphasis is on the intellectual and emotional
integration of each student. Counseling is focused on helping students become inner
directed, self-actualizing persons capable of moving toward sound decision making and a
healthy, well integrated life-style.
The Counseling Department, in partnership with the faculty and staff, exists to
assist students with their personal, academic and career choices and concerns.
In the event that a counselor requests to see a student, or a student fills out a
request slip to see a counselor, a pass will be issued. It is the students responsibility to
show this pass to the teacher. Teachers are requested to sign the student out of class by
filling in the appropriate time of exit and their initials. When a student leaves a
counselors office, the counselor will fill in the appropriate time and initial it. The student
should show the teacher the pass when returning to class.
In the event that a student is to take a test, quiz, or make some type of
presentation in class, the teacher is NOT obligated to release the student for a counseling
interview. Always, a students freedom to leave class to see a counselor is at the
discretion of the teacher. The counselors will respect this exercise of the teachers
discretion.
Supervision
Faculty members must adhere to the following policies regarding
supervision:
There must be one chaperone for each twenty students.
If students will be swimming, adequate supervision would require
the presence of a qualified lifeguard.
Adult chaperones must be with the students at all times. Students
are not allowed to go off to restaurants, etc., unaccompanied.
Transportation Policy
Although SCPS has a transportation policy which allows students to travel in
vehicles other than SCPS School vehicles, the use of these vehicles must be with
discretion. The guidelines to follow are:
Large groups should use rented buses.
For small groups, the faculty sponsor may use his/her own automobile, or
a van rented by the school. In either case, the following must be assured:
