Questions Procedure A: Measuring the Half Life and the Time Constant
exp
1 Compare the time constants of the circuits: When was longer, when R was high or when R
was low?

The higher the resistance, the longer the time constant for the same capacitor, as predicted by RC .

2 Compare the times to fully charge. When was t full longer, when exp was long or when exp was
short?
The longer the time constant, the longer it takes for the capacitor to fully charge.

3 Given that q CV , what was the maximum current stored in the capacitor in each case? Show
the calculations here:
Since the capacitor and the voltage stayed the same in all trial, the maximum charge was the same for
all:

q = (277.1 F)(4.0 V) =1110 C

1. What are some factors that could account for the percent difference between the theoretical and
experimental values?
There may be disagreement between the face values of resistance and capacitance and their actual
value.
The resistance and capacitance of the wires is not taken into account, although this should be minimal.
It is hard to decide in the graph when the capacitor reached its full charge.
