In the year 2067, giant international corporations have taken over, leaving the

world over populated and massively polluted. A corrupt government funds a

controversial expedition for a group of ten scientists and ten test subjects,
cleverly named inhabitants, to try and build a new life on Saturn. The
inhabitants have to try to live on Saturn, but first they must learn to live
together.

Synopsis:

After winning the grant to launch the project, the

scientists searched for subjects to test the different
environments, once created. Subjects from all over
the world signed up, including Richard. A mechanic
from the country England, inundated with debt and
trying to provide a better life for his family. The
drama unfolds when a technical disaster occurs;
leaving the vessel stranded with over half the crew
unconscious or dead. Leaving two people to save
the fate of the ship, Richard and Dr. Penelope Gray.
Both characters having conflicting interests; as well
as an element of the division of class. Trapped on
different parts of the shuttle, Richard uses his
working knowledge of mechanics to fix the radio,
allowing the two individuals to communicate. After
realising the ship was sabotaged, and the mission
was set up to fail, the two decide to work together
to get back to earth to expose the government.
Running into a number of problems throughout, the
two manage to find a way off the ship, but there is
only room for one person.
Format:

Many Moons is a single drama play, as it has a

linear narrative, which is provided in full, in the
duration of the five minutes. It fits into the drama
category, as it tells a fictional story, depicted
through use of performances and audio visuals.
The story itself belongs to the science fiction
genre, due to the structure. The piece has both a
protagonist, an antagonist and a hero character.
The narrative structure combined with the setting
of space, high tech gadgets and prospect of
discovering a new world, means the piece slots
into the science fiction genre.
Detailed Outline:

The style and conventions of my radio drama

piece will allow it to fit into the science fiction
genre. Most science fiction pieces have a
protagonist and an antagonist, in this case, the
protagonist is Richard Roberts, and the antagonist
is the sabotaged shuttle. The narrative of this piece
uses new scientific principles; it has created a new
world of rules in which it needs to stay true to
throughout the narrative. Similarly, to other
science fiction pieces, it is set in the future;
creating an alternate version of the earth, we
know. The storyline bares a resemblance to most
other science fiction pieces, with the generic
conflict of good and evil within the narrative
structure, a fresh way. The story shares elements
of Blade Runner, with the idealism of an over
polluted, mass populated earth. However, unlike
the aforementioned work, Many Moons explores
the possibilities of how these issues would be
potentially dealt with and how it effects the world
as a whole, rather than one individual.
Narrative Structure:

Many Moons is an anti realist piece, opening

the audiences mind to an alternate version of the
life they are already aware of. The narrative of this
piece is linear; as it explores how a series of events
unfold, and how different people react to these in a
different way. It is also a refreshing way to explore
the issues of elitism and class divides. It is
appropriate to its scheduling, being aired in the
evening, so it is less likely for a younger audience,
as some of the themes of the content may be scary
for younger individuals.

Target Audience:
My target audience for this piece is ages between
25 -50. This is a large age range; however I believe
that my drama has aspects for a wide range of
people. I chose not to go below the age of 25, as
radio is not a popular media platform with this
demographic. I believe this will appeal to the socio
economical group B. I believe that the complex
storyline and use of scientific knowledge would be
easier interpreted by a more educated group of
individuals. The piece has a wide range of
representation, showing people from the bottom
and the top of the period. It attempts to show why
the characters act the way they do, and how their
back grounds affect this.

Charlotte Pooley

as Dr Penelope Gray
Charlotte was chosen for this role as I believe her
emotional range, as well as the projection of her voice
would mean she would give a realistic performance.
This is important as the ambience of the piece is what
helps build up the tension for the audience and a poor
performance could cause displacement.
Joshua McCartney

As Richard Roberts
Joshua was chosen for this role for his understanding of
the role and how it would be played. Joshuas
characterisation of Richard allows him to give a
convincing performance, which brings the overall
production standard up.
