ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LESSON PLAN

(Adapted from Madeline Hunters Research)

Student Name: Alessia Canosa Date: February 21, 2017 Age Group:
6 7 years old
Grade: Grade 1
Unit/Subject: Reading Response - Language
Materials: (List the materials needed for this lesson)
- Handout (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day)
- The book: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
- Pencils
Objectives: (What the students should/learn/accomplish/master/understand
as a result of the lesson)
The students will continue to comprehend a story that is read to them,
in order to relate it to a personal experience. The children will continue to
use their words of the week and personal dictionaries to the check spelling of
their words. The students will continue to demonstrate how to form complete
sentences without any help.
Anticipatory Set: (In what way will you activate their prior knowledge and
experience to help them relate to todays lesson?)
- I will ask the students if anyone has ever read this story before
- I will ask the students what they think the book might be about
Teaching: (Step by step discussion for how the lesson will be taught)
Instructional Input:
What knowledge will you communicate to the students so that they
understand the objective of the lesson (film, tape, video, pictures, etc.)
- I will read the story to the children
- I will explain to the children what the activity is that is planned for the
lesson, by showing it to them on the smart board
Guided Practise:
What activities will the students perform under your supervision to ensure
that they are able to practise the material/concepts taught in the lesson?
How will you support students when errors are made?
- I will assist the children in the spelling of words in which they do not
know.
- If a word is spelt incorrectly I will inform the child and show them how
to spell the word correctly in their personal dictionaries.
Modeling:
How will you demonstrate the skill or competence so the student will also be
able to do it? (Use of materials to show students examples of what is
expected as a final product of their work)
I will model the expectation of the activity by giving the students an example
of when I personally had a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
Checking for Understanding:
How will you check that the students have understood/learned the
objectives?
I will walk around the classroom to see how children are doing with the
assignment. I will also review the students activity sheets when they are
completed.
Questioning Strategies:
What types of questions might you ask to probe higher level thinking?
I will ask students how else might they be able to add to their readings
responses in order to get a level 4 mark.
Closure:
Develop a statement that brings the lesson to an appropriate conclusion. A
statement of closure is the act of reviewing and clarifying the key points of a
lesson. It is used to:
1. Cue students to the fact that they are at the end of the lesson
2. Help organize student learning
3. Help students form a clearer picture of what the lesson is all about
- I will review the activity to be completed individually when students
are sent back to their desks
- I will ask a few students to share with the class about a Terrible,
Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day that they might have had
Independent Practice:
List homework or seatwork assignments the students will be expected to
complete in order to practice the material/skill without teacher
supervision
- The children will be given a handout entitled Alexander and the
Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day) in which they are to
complete about a personal Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Reflection:
- What went well? Provide examples for how you know it went well.
- What didnt go well? Provide examples for how you know it didnt go
well
- What did you learn?
- What might you do differently next time you implement this same
experience and why?
- Did you have to make any adaptations or modifications? If so, what
were they?
- What type of experience might you plan to extend on this one?
