Report should be ready by fall, says
Richmond’s medical health officer
by Martin van den Hemel
Staff Reporter
Is the gypsy moth spray harmful to human health?
An answer could be around the corner, as months of data is cur-
rently being gathered from Richmond Hospital’s emergency ward
and doctor’s offices across the city, Dr. James Lu, Richmond’s chief
medical health officer told The Richmond Review this week.
Specifically, the study will look at the reasons why people vis-
ited their physician or the emergency room before, during and
after the spraying period, Lu said.
This data will then be compared to numbers from 2009 to see
if there’s any evidence—such as a spike in the number of asthma
or respiratory complaints—of a link to the Btk spraying which
started on April 30.
“With the advent of more electronic systems, it’s a little easier
to do,” Lu said of the data collection.

caterpillars that feed on tree leaves, and can damage forests,

Olympic costs
hard to measure
O
n Friday, the B.C. government gave
taxpayers another new number: $925
million.
That, it says, is what the province spent on the 2010 Games,
despite years of rhetoric from the Liberals that their commit-
ment would not exceed $600 million.
But the true cost of these Games is much higher—and can’t
be measured solely in dollars and cents.
B.C. taxpayers also paid for the $1-billion Sea-to-Sky
Highway, which inexplicably was built without tollbooths,
despite the government’s penchant to do so with suburban
bridges. There’s also the $2-billion Canada Line and millions
more in Crown corporation spending. Years ago, in fact, B.C.’s
auditor-general estimated the entire bill for taxpayers—from
all three levels of government—would ring in at $4.3 billion.
Today, that number seems conservative.
Municipally, Richmond alone spent millions on building the
Richmond Olympic Oval, and millions more in hosting the O
Zone celebration site and dressing up the city for the two-
week occasion.
What taxpayers want to know is was all this money spent on
hosting the Games good value. Look no farther than the secu-
rity cost at the recent G20 summit in Toronto for the answer.
The $1 billion spent on staging and security for the world
leaders’ summit proved ineffective to stop a few protestors
from burning police cars and smashing store windows.
We all knew the Olympics would cost taxpayers money—
and plenty of it. But the G20 summit cost each and everyone
of us $35, and what did it get us? A black eye and a security
fence.
The Olympics, however, left us with much more. It left us
venues, a new place on the world stage and a valuable volun-
teer force. It also left us with a sense of pride, a new feeling
of patriotism and memories that are impossible to quantify
with numbers and dollar signs. Other lasting legacies include
