2. INTRODUCTION

2.1. Overview
EDD is a product of DATACOMs DmSwitch family geared to offer intelligent LAN/WAN demarcation services
for last mile Metro Ethernet access.

EDD enables managed access connections according to IEEE 802.3ah (Ethernet First Mile Operations,
Administration and Maintenance) and 802.1ag (Connectivity Fault Management), housed as a standalone
device with a full range AC/DC internal power supply. E1 ports are used for converting TDM data in Ethernet
packets (CESoP Bundles). WAN ports are to be used with SFP modules, allowing flexibility of optical
configurations and varying distances (SFP modules are sold separately).

Centralized management is achieved through DATACOMs DmView Network Management System, which
offers a graphical user interface to monitor the state and condition of the unit, network conditions as well as
configuration and inventory management functions.

EDD also offers additional QoS services which enables traffic prioritization and bandwidth availability control at
the demarcation point.

When performing installation and maintenance operations of optical fibers, do not stand close or look
directly into the fiber outlet with unprotected eyes.

Electrostatic generated by human body may damage the electrostatic sensitive components on the
equipment.

2.3. System and Port Status LEDs

System Status LEDs on the front panel can be used to monitor system activity. The Figure 3 shows where the
LEDs are located and the Table 1 indicates the system status according to each LEDs condition.

3. MAKING CONNECTIONS

3.1. Connecting Devices through RJ45 Ports

EDD can be connected to 10/100 or 100Mbit/s devices. Its ports accept automatic MDI/MDI-X configuration, so
either crossover or straight cables can be used.

Use Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) or Shielded Twisted-Pair (STP) cables with RJ45 connectors. Connect one
end of the cable directly in the switch port and the other in the other network device.

Check Table 6 to make sure the cables that are being used for the network are the correct ones.

Connection UTP Category

10Base-T 3 or better
100Base-TX 5 or better
1000Base-T 5 or better
Table 6. Cable Category

3.2. SFP Module

3.2.1. Connecting an SFP Module

Using SFP transceiver is optional. It is not included in the package. Follow the next instructions to install an SFP
module properly:

Figure 8. Connecting an SFP module

1. Insert the SFP transceiver into any SFP cage of the switch. There's only one orientation that the
module can be plugged. The optical connector must face outward. The slot connector must face down for the
upper bays, and up for the lower bays.
2. Slide the module into the slot and press firmly to ensure it is securely placed.
Inserting or removing an SFP module can be done without powering off the switch. SFP transceivers are
hot-swappable, but make sure there are no network optical fibers connected to the module before
removing it! (Remove optical fibers before removing SFP modules).

After this, attach the security locker according to the figure below:

Figure 9. Locking the SFP module

SFP modules that can be used with EDD and each respective maximum fiber length are described in the tables
below:

SFP Module Fiber Type Maximum Distance

MS13 Multimode 2km
SS13 Singlemode 30km
SL13 Singlemode 60km
SL15 Singlemode 100km
SLx15 Singlemode 120km
Table 7. Fast SFP Modules

1000Base-T electrical modules are supported.

SFP Module Fiber Type Maximum Distance

1000Base-SX Multimode 550m
1000Base-LX/LX10 Singlemode 10km
1000Base-LX+ Singlemode 30km
1000Base-LH Singlemode 80km
1000Base-LZ Singlemode 120km
Table 8. Gigabit SFP Modules

These modules are the most commonly used. Contact technical support for the complete and updated
SFPs module list.
Signals over optical fiber are transmitted via lasers. Although the lasers are compliant with the
requirements of Class 1 Laser Products and are eye safe in normal conditions, never look directly at a
transmit port when it is turned on.

3.2.2. Removing an SFP Module

To remove SFP modules follow the instructions below:

Figure 10. Removing an SFP module

1. Remove fibers
2. Release security locker
3. Pull out module by the locker

3.2.3. Transceivers Homologation Check

DATACOM transceivers are tested to comply with IEEE802.3z and laser safety standards. Non-homologated
transceivers do not guarantee compliance and may damage EDD.
4. INSTALLATION GUIDE

4.1. Package Contents

Be sure you have received all content listed below and check if any item is damage.

One 2104G2-EDD E1

One AC power cable

If there is something missing or damaged, contact DATACOM for assistance.

4.2. Installation Guidelines

Before installing the switch, make sure to follow the guidelines below:

Choose a location where RJ45 and SFP ports can be easily reached, allowing LEDs to be
visible.

EDD box is made of plastic, so dont put heavier equipments over it.

Sites temperature should be kept within 0C to 55C and its humidity within 10 to 90% non-
condensing.

Do not block airflow exit so provide approximately 5 centimeters (2 inches) of space on all sides
of the device.

Place the switch near a power source.

4.3. Powering the switch

Before connecting any cable to the equipment, be sure that the grounding system is functional.

After installing the switch, plug one end of IEC-320 standard power cable into the AC receptacle located
at the rear panel of the switch (see in Figure 6) and the other end into a local power source outlet. Power
LED should light, indicating the switch is correctly powered.

If DC power is used, power cable must be cut close to the AC sockets connection plug and connected in
a way that the socket central pin corresponds to protection ground and the other 2 pins for the power
supply (see in Figure 11). Equipments shelf is connected directly to the protection ground.
