A faculty Development Programme (FDP) was organized by the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering on the subject
Engineering Mechanics on 15 to 31 July 2017. The under-mentioned faculty were the resource persons:

The entire subject was systematically covered by the above resource persons in four shifts during two weeks. All
faculty of the Dept. have been highly benefited by well-planned efforts on basic and important concepts of the
Engineering Mechanics subject. A feedback about the conduct of the FDP was also obtained from all the faculty of
the Dept. These feedbacks are kept in the Dept. for record and further improvement purpose.

Abstract: THE book is written from the point of view of the engineering student, and the
applications of the principles of mechanics are treated conformably with engineering practice. Thus the
examples are drawn from roof trusses, bridge girders, journal bearings, pump impellers, automobile
engines, and the like. Applications in other directions are ignored as inappropriate. The subject matter
is clearly expounded, with many well-executed diagrams which should render the text easy to
assimilate. The usual ground is covered in two parts, the first dealing with statics and the second with

kinematics and kinetics. The author makes a point of omitting any reference to the term mass in the
development of the last-named subject until after he has restated and explained Newtons Laws of
Motion independently of it. Indeed, he avoids the use of the word throughout, urging that it is not
essential to the elucidation of problems which particularly concern the engineer. Appended to each
section of explanatory text is a selection of illustrative examples, with solutions or answers. With its
modern instances.

Draw complete and correct free-body diagrams and write the appropriate equilibrium
equations from the free-body diagram.
Determine the support reactions on a structure.

Determine the internal reactions in a beam, draw correct shear-force and bending moment
diagrams, and write equations for the shear-force and bending moment as functions of
position along the beam.
Analyze systems that include frictional forces.
Locate the centroid of an area.
Calculate the second moment of an area, calculate the principal second moments of an area.
