Scenario: These lessons are part of a larger unit of fairy tales from different
cultures. In this unit, students focus on comparing and contrasting the United
States version of Cinderella and the Native American version (Rough Face Girl).

Overview: The essential questions for this unit are: How is the original version of
Cinderella the same as Rough Face Girl? How is the original version of Cinderella
different from Rough Face Girl?
Final Product: Students will complete a chart on the elements of the two versions
read and use the web 2.0 tool Classtools on the computer to produce a Venn
diagram of the similarities and differences they discover between the stories.

Library Lesson: Second graders will be able to (1) identify similarities and
differences in two versions of a fairy tale, and (2) organize their information.

Estimated Lesson Time: 3 sessions of 20-40 minutes each.

Assessment
Product: Students will complete a short checklist to assess whether they
successfully completed the assignment.

Process: The LMS and students will discuss what students did well and where they
had problems in creating their Venn Diagrams.

Student Self-questioning: Did I complete the chart with elements from each
story read? Did I identify at least 3 differences between the 2 stories? Did I
identify at least 3 similarities between the 2 stories?

Instruction/Activities
Session 1: The LMS will read the original version of Cinderella. She will discuss
the elements of the story with the class (characters, setting, plot, etc.). She will
provide the students with a chart and demonstrate how to fill in these elements as
she displays the chart on the Smartboard and fills it in as they discuss the
elements for the students to see.

Session 2: The LMS will read Rough Face Girl and discuss the elements of the
story with the class. The students will fill in the chart of the elements of the
story as the LMS fills it in on the Smartboard for the students to see.

Session 3: The students will take their chart and reflect on the stories read.
Using the computer and the web 2.0 tool Classtools, they will create a Venn
diagram comparing and contrasting the original Cinderella version and the Native
American version, Rough Face Girl with three similarities and three differences.
Students will share what they recorded on their Venn diagrams with the class. The
LMS will record responses on a class Venn diagram (on Smartboard for everyone to
see) using a different color. The LMS will show students how to complete the
happy/sad face checklist for self-assessment. Students will complete their
checklists.

Strategies for differentiation: The LMS will circulate as students work on their
Venn diagrams and provide varying levels of assistance depending on difficulties
experienced by students. Students who need extensive assistance will work with a
partner to complete the task.
